Recently went to Astons Specialties at East Coast for a meal. It was highly recommended by my friend. But I dun eat beef, so I have to go for their Chickens.
The queue was freaking long. The main reason is that they served ‘good’ and cheap western food. I personally find it so-so. The price starts from SGD5.90 for a set that comes with 2 sides.
Chargrilled Chicken - It reminds me of Hans. The chicken chop is a bit too tough. I like the bake beans though. The pasta salad is well prepared. Not too dry.
My Dear ordered for their Prime Cut. He said it’s good and better than the wagyu beef that my friend had. Wagyu Beef - He forgot how much he is paying for it. - $38.90 Cannot compare lah… :p

People always thought that the best meals are having good food accompanied with good wines. But i came to realise its not just that, the most important ingredient for the perfect meal is simply having good company. Food in the company of good friends can be good food, regardless how cheap or expensive it is.
Visit to Aston with my good friends, wee hong, hong yi, sherman. Food turns out to be good (and cheap). Reach Aston at 730pm, and it has a long Q already, did not make prior reservations as they do not take any. Waiting time for us was about 35mins to get to the counter to make our order, the food came shortly after that.
The main problem i noticed about Aston is that they only have one counter for diners to make the orders, so for those in large groups, they usually take quite a long time in deciding and making the orders, when we went in, there was plenty of seats available and they were able to serve the food fast, thus i feel that they should increase the number of counters to speed up the waiting process.
The main course have a wide variety of selections, for chicken there is chargill, black pepper, cripsy fried, hickory bbq, teriyaki, lemon lime, double up, chicken & sausage combo. Most are price at $5.90, with double up chicken at $9.90 and chicken & sausage combo at $10.90.
For steaks there are prime sirloin, black pepper steak, prime ribeye, prime tenderloin, and pork chops, ribs, lamp loin chops. There are also fish dishes, and pasta.
Every main course comes with 2 sides, which includes hot sides; baked potato, french fries, seasonal veggie, onion ring, bbq beans, tasty rice, corn on the cob, mashed potato, and cold sides; potato salad, coleslaw, pasta salad, house salad.
Prime Ribeye ($12.90) with choice of coleslaw and fries, medium raw. Steak was unusually tender and juicy (heard that Aston is good for its steak). Generous servings of sides, i wanted house salad but its run out. But one thing about the steak is, the meat was rather fat, comparing to steaks i had before, this one was really fat, can see all the fat meat around. Nevertheless, i’ve enjoyed the steak, and at its price i think its rather cheap 4.5 out of 5
Black Pepper Steak ($10.90) accompanied by coleslaw and onion ring, medium raw. Steak was not bad, but i prefered my prime ribeye. This steak also has lots of fat, mister ang had a hard time chewing the meat. lol 3.5 out of 5
Lemon lime chicken ($5.90) with coleslaw and mashed potato. A simple Chicken fillet was dressed up with a refreshing lemon lime sauce, the dish was quite unique because never seen chicken with lemon lime sauce before. 4 out of 5
Hickory BBQ Chicken ($5.90) together with potato salad and onion rings. The BBQ sauce on the chicken was tasty, a bit sweet and u-know-bbq-flavour. How else to describe? Cheap and good! 4 out of 5
Anyway, i would say Aston food are good, a cafe ambience, price are reasonable or even cheap to be exact. Pity the long Q needed, but i think just go early to avoid having to Q for long. Mister ang drive so its easy for us to get there, the shop is opposite Katong Mall. Good food, good price! But they do not serve ice water, each glass is at 30 cents, so we rather buy soft drink. Total bill was $41.20 for 4 pax, dudes treated me for this meal, thanks guys!
On our way there, we passed by the newly opened Cafe Oliv (will probably try them next time), and also, will definitely go back to Aston again for dinner (but kind of far for us people living in the west).

Well, I've heard so many great things about Astons that I decided to troop down to the Katong branch to check the eatery out myself.
I decided to make a reservation for a table for 2 on New Year's Eve. Unfortunately, they didn't allow me to make a reservation. I'm not sure if it was because it was new year's eve or if it is their usual practice. Anyway, I wasn't put off by that because I think it's not an unusual practice for very popular eateries (that serve good food) in order not to keep other customers waiting.
I got there around 7.30pm and surprisingly, the queue moved pretty fast. Perhaps, it's because I wasn't in a big group, thus it was much easier for us to get seats. I recommend that if you're going in a group of more than 3 people, it's best to go at least an hour earlier to get seats at your desired time.
While we were queuing, the staff passed the menus around and took our orders so that by the time we had seats, the food would arrive shortly.
After queuing for 35 mins, we got in and the food arrived 7-10 mins later. The service was excellent (staff was attentive to my requests) , saved for the fact that they got one of my side orders mixed up and forgot to give us cutlery . But I supposed it's normal since it was a really busy day for them.
As for the quality and price of the food, I must say it's really VALUE FOR MONEY. I ordered a prime sirloin which set me back by $10.50 and it came with 2 side dishes. My steak wasn't tough or soft- it had the right amount of 'chewiness'. It would have been better if the accompanying sauce was abit thicker, but overall, it was a satisfying meal.
My friend ordered the prime tenderloin extra cut for $ 15.90 ( it also comes with 2 side dishes) and it was really juicy and tender. According to him, this one was nicer than the exact same one he ordered at Outback Steakhouse, just at 1/2 the price!
On top of steak, we also ordered cream of mushroom soup & garlic bread. The soup served was excellent ( it came with 2 slices of garlic bread and costs $2.50) , it's not like the typical soups offered in restaurants- from the can. I'm not too sure if Aston's soup is homemade or from the can, i'm guessing it's homemade since it was really well cooked. You could taste the freshness of the cream in it and they did not stinge on the mushrooms given. Complete with a dash of pepper, this soup gets my 2 thumbs up!
As for the garlic bread, it was a generous serving - 6 mini slices of bread for $1.50 . But I found it a little too hard and the garlic spread was a little bit bland and boring. However, it makes up for the blandness and hardness once you dip the bread into the soup!
The bill came up to a total of $35 ( we also ordered 3 drinks) which was VERY REASONABLE for the amount and quality of the food that we ordered. We were very full when we left the restaurant.
It's really rare to find good steak meals at such cheap prices -even the ones offered at hawker centres seem bland and too oily - not worth it at all when all you need to do is pay maybe $2.50 more for a better meal at Astons.
Besides steak, Astons also serves a variety of spaghetti, fish and chicken. I will definitely go back some time soon to try out the other dishes they offer.
The interior looks pretty decent as well ( with nice hanging lampshades, leather couches and air-con) - not shabby at all for such a cheap eatery! Aston is indeed the place for you to go, if you're looking for good & cheap steak!
