For a start, I looked forward to this lunch meetup with Claudia and Bobo very much. Feizhu's arrival was a pleasant surprise, but one more friend is never too much.
I was pretty surprised that Earle Swensen’s was pretty empty when Bobo and I stepped in. Hey, it's a Sunday... we see plenty of people... it's lunchtime! Why shouldn't it be packed? As we made our way to the table, it's pretty evident of the spacious floor area, and the scenery overlooking the Sentosa was great. Like I was telling the rest, it would be absolutely stunning to have outdoor seats after the sun sets. I wouldn't mind bringing my own candles.
Let me leave the other food reviews to the individual rapists. (The criminals know what they did...)
Let me touch on my first order, the cappuccino... lousy! It tasted just like any coffee I can rip off in food courts, to the point I feel stupid trying to have my coffee fix there. Why on earth did I even spend more than what I paid for in CoffeeBean, and yet get a cup half the size of CoffeeBean's serving? Secondly, the cappuccino was almost cold. There is air-con but I doubt the air-con is that powerful? You can never bluff your way through with a coffee addict!
My main dish was Sirloin Steak with mashed potato. I have other options to go along with like french fries, but I always thought mashed potato is more appropriate to go along with steaks. For steaks, I often swear by Swensen@Orchard. Therefore, my obvious choice was to try their Sirloin Steak. One word - HORRIBLE!
To put it simply, it was small. I had wanted my steak done medium-rare, and any steak enthusiast should know how bloodied it should be. The very second my knife sunk into the steak, I know I'm in for a big disappointment. The feel of slicing into medium-rare steak just wasn't there. In fact, it took me quite some strength to slice it open for everyone to see. No kidding! Everyone could see that the steak was cooked right down to the center. Not a trace of blood and I'm sorry, that is not medium-rare! For a while, I thought I ordered Lamb Chop.
If you know it's a thin slice of steak, control the cooking time. This is really dependent on the chef and his experience.
However, the sauce was tasting good but too bad the steak spoilt the entire dish totally. Salvaging the dish was the mash potato, or so I thought. Tasted good, but it wasn't mashed properly. I could still bite little chunks of potato. My last hope for some form of compensation just got cruxified.
I'm convinced of my preference of Swensen steak outlet. Earle Swensen @ Vivocity definitely does not make the mark for my tastebuds.
My verdict? I'm sorry, but this place is not worth the money they charged. And I think it's slightly higher than other Swensen's branches? Avoid at all cost if you can, there are plenty more eateries along the whole stretch to satisfy your hunger. 2 stars for the generally friendly staffs, comfortable seats, clean environment and great scenery, that's about it.
Like the rest of them, if not for the great company I would have walked out of that place frowning. You just can't bluff your way through with sub-standard (if not horrendous) food, can you?
Secrets at Eleven is a relaxing and very nice place to get your pretty nails. Located on the second level (above Happy Daze). The decor is simple and welcoming. I had my meni done at their balcony. Imagine, relaxing on a big arm chair, with open view of the happenings below me and the friendliest manicurist. 2 other friends can sit next to you by the balcony and together have your nails done up, drink a cup of nice warm tea and catch-up with the latest happenings in life.
The manicurists know their products very well and their service and skill is good. When come to choosing colors for the nails, they'll try on every color you want to see on each of your nails so that you can see exactly how it looks like on your hands. (I ended up with 10 different color on my fingers!) This is great cos you'll not regret only after all the nails were painted. They wouldn't rush you and they'll be more than glad to try on as many colors as you want so that you're happy with the decision.
For just $23 for a classic mani and $33 for a classic pedi, Secrets at Eleven is the place to go with your girlfriends!
Waking up hungry on a Saturday morning and travelling a long way on MRT is no easy feat. I arrived at Tiong Bahru Plaza wondering what I can have for breakfast but after looking at McDonald's long queue, I gave up and decided to browse around for other options.
I turned the corner and saw Ya Kun Kaya Toast outlet. There were little people and so I thought that would be a good fix. I pop over the counter, and was greeted cheerfully. Not just the cashier, but also the assistant in the background who bellowed out a loud "GOOD MORNING!" in Chinese. Okay, a little embarrassing but that's a good start to the day.
I ordered a Set A because I didn't want to eat too much. The coffee was quickly prepared, and the way it was served to me - surprising. It was also the first time someone offered this option to me... "Enjoy your breakfast mister, if your coffee is not sweet enough, come back to me for a little more sugar/milk". NICE! I always love my coffee slightly sweeter.
One thing that turns me off about Ya Kun is how hard the toasts are. I have already taken note of the varying differences of toasts among several branches, and I guess it boils down very much to the person preparing it.
Ya Kun @ Tong Bahru gives me my perfect toast just as I like it. A balanced toast ending with a crispy surface, BUT the interior of the bread is soft. I have tried Ya Kun toasts from elsewhere, biting into them feel more like cookies than toast bread. The fillings of butter slices and kaya were generous too.
The half-boiled eggs were a joy. Nicely done, not too much raw parts but yet, not too cooked too. Coffee was nice. It was thick and not diluted, the sweetness was just nice to my standard and preference of coffee so I didn't need to turn back to the kind offer I was told.
Nice things are said, now comes the critics. They weren't hot enough. Everything was warm, but not hot. Coffee drinkers like me enjoy having our coffee piping hot and that was a disappointment. Somehow, coffee don't taste as enjoyable as when it's just warm.
The half-boiled eggs were close to being cold. Literally I mean! As I held up the plate, I don't even feel a single bit of warmth until I slurped the eggs the good old style, it was only that little warm. What another disappointment! Thanks God the bread were freshly toasted and that saved the day.
My verdict? It's barely an acceptable for breakfast, if you do not mind the high price at Ya Kun. That's about it. Perhaps, not all traditional remains the same after franchising or branching.
If only everything were served really hot, I think the experience of having breakfast there will be even better. Tables were very small, too small for my liking so you had better grab another chair to place your bags or suitcases on. You don't actually expect much atmosphere in such a branch, do you?
Pepper Lunch , by now is a new popular fast food chain serving up set meals on a sizzling hot pot right up to your table. It's like an individual serving of BBQ food.
Each set has a good combination of meat, vegetables and rice. A nice well-balanced meal, served fast cos it cooks at your table. :) A nice alternative to the regular fast food, but it's at twice the price.
What we ordered at the Suntec Outlet: Teriyaki Chicken Set Beef Pepper Rice
The place was rather empty (as it was a weekday) when we went in at 11.30am... we ordered quickly. They adopted a new system of seating people. They give you a table number suitable for the number of patrons and the huge number tags are already on all the tables. I think this is much more efficient and it prevents people from hogging tables far too big for their group. The Teriyaki Chicken set is their latest promotion so it's not on their menu on their website. The lady introduced it to me and I gladly tried it. There's also the Teriyaki Salmon set and Teriyaki Beef Set.
Our food arrived quickly. The young man who served us patiently explained how to cook the food and what condiments we could add. He said it quickly, clearly and with a smile.
Both dishes were good. The food tasted fine, partly due to our cooking. haha
One gripe would be the presentation of the food. They were very innovative in having the paper around the hotplate so that patrons would not burn themselves against it. But the chopsticks and the bowls are of very poor material, and quite ugly in fact. Another thing is that the salt and pepper container at our table was virtually empty. Since it was the start of the day, I would have expected everything to be nicely filled up.
By the time we left at 12.10pm, the place was nicely filling up with the lunchtime crowd.
Now.. I would like to try the cheaper Pepper Lunch at Century Square Food court... haha
I'm loving every bits of this new magazine! Saw this new magazine at the newsstand and was attracted by its name - Smitten. Curious to know what's it about, I picked it up and glance through the cover and saw that this copy is their debut issue and topics looks pretty interesting.
Project Smitten is the name of the magazine. (Smitten reminds me of kitten. Small, cute, playful, fun, pretty and mischievous!)
Flipping through the pages of Smitten and I'm greeted by the faces behind Smitten. In Smitten picks, the key ladies in Smitten share they favorite picks for the month. This gives me, as a reader, feel closer to the magazine as I'm able to match the names to faces. Loving this!
Every page you flip to, you'll find the trendiest and uber stylish fashion. Best of all, they show you exactly where you can get them! Even the cute little puppies.
Another section I love is the spy section - spy now and smitten spy. You'll be able to find rare finds and hidden treasures locally, internationally and in the www in these sections.

*****Updated 6 Jan 2008***** Was delighted to have received my first subscribed delivery from Project Smitten (Jan/Feb08) this morning at my doorstep. Since I’m at my CNY shopping mood, I quickly flipped the pages and see what they’ve in store for us. Spotted a “Hot Buy” of a bag organiser from M)phosis on page 55 of this issue and wanted to get one for myself. Went shopping at Bugis Junction and stopped by M)phosis to ask if they’ve stock for it. Looks like, I’m not the first who was there to ask about this bag.
The salesgirl asked which magazine I saw this bag in and told me that the bag I was looking for was from months ago! They no longer carry it! I asked if they’ll be bringing in more, she said it depends.
I was quite upset that this thing happened. Why does a fashion magazine publish a product that was already not on sale? I was very pleased with their content once. But after this incident, and many other which I’d heard (from their facebook group), I guess they’ve got to improve a lot more to gain back the trust from existing subscribers and attract new ones.
Yummy O? Yet another donut outlet for the craze for donuts. Was it really Yummy?
Ever since don't know when, the craze for donuts picked up and everyone in Singapore was taking leave and skipping lessons just to queue for a box of donuts. Similar to many other craze fab, everyone wants a piece of this fab pie "while the rod is hot". So everywhere I go, I see some kind of donuts outlet and if there's not a long queue, I'll go get some to try it out. (Famous or not famous, rewarded or not rewarded.)
The drifting fragrance of the donuts lured me towards the stall hidden at the corner of White Sands (among OCK and other snack stalls). Curious to find out what they have to offer, I went to take a peep. And the heart shaped donuts and mocha flavored ones tempted me to buy and try. Something different from the other donuts is that they donut prices are fixed. No bulk discount even if you buy 6 or 12 in a box. (Maybe that's why there wasn't a queue?) And one plus point for this is the packaging. Instead of just placing your donuts in a big box, they have this plastic tray that separates the donuts in the box, I thought this was helpful, so you don't have to worry about them pushing against one another inside the box.
Now, the most important element is the taste and yumminess of these donuts. They claimed to be the only donut awarded with an award by Singapore. (can't remember by which organisation) but I'm having second thought about it. My mum agreed with me too. I told her I didn't have to queue for these donuts. And later when she tried one, she told me those I queued for tasted better. These donuts were too sweet and the dough taste just like any bread with fillings from the usual bakeries. Other than this, I don't know what else to comment on the donuts. Sure not how their name suggests.
Totally agree with Leenie! Kallang McDonalds is the best place to go!
This is the place where I spent most of my weekends and some weekdays noon at. Especially during the school holidays. My bf and I will drive up, park at the Free parking lots and spend the whole afternoon at Kallang McDonalds, either marking worksheets, preparing presentations, writing papers or mugging for exams.
With the Free power sources around the place, no wonder so many business people who works out of office would gather there for meetings or checking emails and surfing the net.
The corner booth seats next to the toilet is my favorite spot. But they're usually taken up. And there's no power point at those seats. Except for one furthest away from the toilet which has a point nearby, but not long enough for the usual labtop cables. So some even brought their own extension chord!! McDonalds should have more of such facilities for their standalone outlets like Kallang's.
I'm giving this outlet 5 stars for their generosity for providing so many power points for customers and never complaining or "chasing" anyone away even if they sat there entire day with just a purchase of a EVM.
If you happen to be there often too, share your experience here too! Who knows, maybe we might have seen one another before! (hmm... maybe we could have a Yebber gathering one day at Kallang McDonalds! tsk tsk.)
Cheap and good is what I call this Chicken Rice Stall.
It was love at first sight! Ever since I took my first mouthful of the rice and chicken with their chilli, I knew immediately that this is what I'll be having for a long long time.
As a fan of chicken rice (I don't take char siew or any food with pork/lard) I give this stall 4 out of 5 thumbs up. I'll order their set everytime I have it. Paying just $3.50 for a plate of boneless chicken, vegetables, rice and soup. Where can you find such a cheap chicken rice meal? I remember paying $5.50 to $6 for a set exactly the same at Food Courts.
The meat is served with cucumber, a slice of tomato and few pieces of archar. Texture of meat is just right and it isn't too oily. The chilli is good too. Trust me. Cos I'm a chilli freak! LOL!
Ayurvedic Salon is a little shop situated at Katong Shopping Centre. It's on the outside facing the main road. Near the Zhi Cha stalls.
I chanced upon this shop last week and was greeted by a sweet Indian lady. She's the only one in the shop but she doesn't speak much English. She's very polite though and not pushy at all.
She did eyebrow threading and upper lip threading on me. It wasn't very painful and she was patient and very thorough. I paid about $11 for both which is reasonable.
I think the best part was that I didn't have any pimples or whiteheads after the threading. It sometimes happens when I go to other places (more expensive places) so I think I'm really satisfied with her service and would definitely visit her regularly.
She also has traditional hair treatment, henna and facial treatments. Quite interesting really. But as it's a one-man outfit you'd have to call the number to make sure she's open before you go! :)

I was just there again today. In fact I have been to this place regularly for the past few months. I like the service here and they are not pushy about their services and products which I find such a relief.
I had my usual threading done then I had a head-shoulder massage for my aching neck. It was great! My head feels so much lighter. while doing the massage, Pooja even suggested some things I can do at home to improve the condition of my hair, without trying to sell me anything at all. Isn't that really rare? Do check them out!
Central is a cafe chain with outlets at Vivo, Tampines and Ngee Ann City... And this one in the basement of Parkway Parade.
Today is not my first time there.. it should be the 3rd trip already. I can't remember what I ordered during the first two trips but it was just ok. A tad expensive if you consider its price... but this time..

Guess we were in the mood for chicken chop. The outlet was relatively crowded for a weekday evening. But we were tend to quickly and had our orders taken. The food took just a short while to arrive which was good since we were really hungry.
The Chicken Chop Dry Noodle was the really thin noodles (which I like) with some vegetables and two pieces of chicken chop. I like the sauce which was not too salty and the noodles. But the chicken was quite fatty and I couldn't bear to eat about 1/5 of it due to that reason. The soup served with the noodles was great. I finished it, which was rare for me.
The Chicken Chop Cheese Baked Rice had more pieces of chicken in it with tomato and was well covered with cheese. The Cheese had hardened a little by the time it arrived but it was still warm. A tad salty for my taste but my companion thought it to be fine. The chicken bits in this dish were less fatty and more palatable.
This time, it cost us $17. Once in a while would be alright.

Yummy O? Yet another donut outlet for the craze for donuts. Was it really Yummy?
Ever since don't know when, the craze for donuts picked up and everyone in Singapore was taking leave and skipping lessons just to queue for a box of donuts. Similar to many other craze fab, everyone wants a piece of this fab pie "while the rod is hot". So everywhere I go, I see some kind of donuts outlet and if there's not a long queue, I'll go get some to try it out. (Famous or not famous, rewarded or not rewarded.)
The drifting fragrance of the donuts lured me towards the stall hidden at the corner of White Sands (among OCK and other snack stalls). Curious to find out what they have to offer, I went to take a peep. And the heart shaped donuts and mocha flavored ones tempted me to buy and try. Something different from the other donuts is that they donut prices are fixed. No bulk discount even if you buy 6 or 12 in a box. (Maybe that's why there wasn't a queue?) And one plus point for this is the packaging. Instead of just placing your donuts in a big box, they have this plastic tray that separates the donuts in the box, I thought this was helpful, so you don't have to worry about them pushing against one another inside the box.
Now, the most important element is the taste and yumminess of these donuts. They claimed to be the only donut awarded with an award by Singapore. (can't remember by which organisation) but I'm having second thought about it. My mum agreed with me too. I told her I didn't have to queue for these donuts. And later when she tried one, she told me those I queued for tasted better. These donuts were too sweet and the dough taste just like any bread with fillings from the usual bakeries. Other than this, I don't know what else to comment on the donuts. Sure not how their name suggests.

Totally agree with Leenie! Kallang McDonalds is the best place to go!
This is the place where I spent most of my weekends and some weekdays noon at. Especially during the school holidays. My bf and I will drive up, park at the Free parking lots and spend the whole afternoon at Kallang McDonalds, either marking worksheets, preparing presentations, writing papers or mugging for exams.
With the Free power sources around the place, no wonder so many business people who works out of office would gather there for meetings or checking emails and surfing the net.
The corner booth seats next to the toilet is my favorite spot. But they're usually taken up. And there's no power point at those seats. Except for one furthest away from the toilet which has a point nearby, but not long enough for the usual labtop cables. So some even brought their own extension chord!! McDonalds should have more of such facilities for their standalone outlets like Kallang's.
I'm giving this outlet 5 stars for their generosity for providing so many power points for customers and never complaining or "chasing" anyone away even if they sat there entire day with just a purchase of a EVM.

Cheap and good is what I call this Chicken Rice Stall.
It was love at first sight! Ever since I took my first mouthful of the rice and chicken with their chilli, I knew immediately that this is what I'll be having for a long long time.
As a fan of chicken rice (I don't take char siew or any food with pork/lard) I give this stall 4 out of 5 thumbs up. I'll order their set everytime I have it. Paying just $3.50 for a plate of boneless chicken, vegetables, rice and soup. Where can you find such a cheap chicken rice meal? I remember paying $5.50 to $6 for a set exactly the same at Food Courts.
The meat is served with cucumber, a slice of tomato and few pieces of archar. Texture of meat is just right and it isn't too oily. The chilli is good too. Trust me. Cos I'm a chilli freak! LOL!

Ayurvedic Salon is a little shop situated at Katong Shopping Centre. It's on the outside facing the main road. Near the Zhi Cha stalls.
I chanced upon this shop last week and was greeted by a sweet Indian lady. She's the only one in the shop but she doesn't speak much English. She's very polite though and not pushy at all.
She did eyebrow threading and upper lip threading on me. It wasn't very painful and she was patient and very thorough. I paid about $11 for both which is reasonable.
I think the best part was that I didn't have any pimples or whiteheads after the threading. It sometimes happens when I go to other places (more expensive places) so I think I'm really satisfied with her service and would definitely visit her regularly.
She also has traditional hair treatment, henna and facial treatments. Quite interesting really. But as it's a one-man outfit you'd have to call the number to make sure she's open before you go! :)
**Update**
I was just there again today. In fact I have been to this place regularly for the past few months. I like the service here and they are not pushy about their services and products which I find such a relief.
I had my usual threading done then I had a head-shoulder massage for my aching neck. It was great! My head feels so much lighter. while doing the massage, Pooja even suggested some things I can do at home to improve the condition of my hair, without trying to sell me anything at all. Isn't that really rare? Do check them out!

Central is a cafe chain with outlets at Vivo, Tampines and Ngee Ann City... And this one in the basement of Parkway Parade.
Today is not my first time there.. it should be the 3rd trip already. I can't remember what I ordered during the first two trips but it was just ok. A tad expensive if you consider its price... but this time..

Chicken Chop Noodle Dry
Chicken Chop Cheese Baked Rice
Guess we were in the mood for chicken chop. The outlet was relatively crowded for a weekday evening. But we were tend to quickly and had our orders taken. The food took just a short while to arrive which was good since we were really hungry.
The Chicken Chop Dry Noodle was the really thin noodles (which I like) with some vegetables and two pieces of chicken chop. I like the sauce which was not too salty and the noodles. But the chicken was quite fatty and I couldn't bear to eat about 1/5 of it due to that reason. The soup served with the noodles was great. I finished it, which was rare for me.
The Chicken Chop Cheese Baked Rice had more pieces of chicken in it with tomato and was well covered with cheese. The Cheese had hardened a little by the time it arrived but it was still warm. A tad salty for my taste but my companion thought it to be fine. The chicken bits in this dish were less fatty and more palatable.
This time, it cost us $17. Once in a while would be alright.
