Chanced upon this online shop that sells various tops, dresses and bottoms. But it seems to have more tops and dresses than bottoms. Although I seldom find an item that I really like and bother to go to the trouble to purchase it (including the transferring of money, waiting for the item to be sent to my house etc. Yes I find online shopping very troublesome!), I find that Loef sells rather decent items. If I were in a shop, I would probably have tried on most of them and bought more than what I already have gotten!

I have been rather skeptical about shopping online, mostly because I can't try the clothes. So I usually limit my purchases to dresses and flair clothing to avoid fitting problems. I'm also rather concerned about the quality of the product, especially since I had a couple of bad experience over the past 3 years which contributed to my skepticism towards online shopping! What made me less worried about shopping at Loef was the fact that their items would often sell out in a matter of days after posting, which led me to infer that they have regulars who constantly go to their shop and trust their products.

What I don't like about the shop:
There is additional mailing cost on top of the price stated. I guess it is common, but I tend to prefer other blogshops that have the mailing cost already included in the price.

    What I like:
There's honestly all to like about this shop in terms of service and quality. As for preference, it is hard to say as each individual has different taste. But if you find that their clothes is to your liking, you could consider visiting this shop more! Why?
    1. Consistent. They consistently update their items twice a week - sometime midweek and end of the week. So you always have something new to look forward to!
    2. Good service. I remember purchasing an item from them which was not the color reflected on their website. I was rather disappointed and wrote in to them, and was really pleased with the way they handled my "problem". They offered to refund me for the item and pay for my mailing fees. Since I already washed the dress and couldn't send it back to them to re-sell, they offered me a discount on my dress which they could send to me in credit form for my next purchase, or direct cash transfer to my bank account. This problem was settled in a matter of 3 exchange of emails! I think this is good customer service and there's much to learn from them! Also, I later realized that they included a note on their website to inform other customers of the difference between the color of the dress on the picture and the actual color. Goes to show that they are concerned about putting up accurate information and immediately made changes upon receiving feedback!
    3. Quality. While I have not shopped a lot online, I was particularly pleased with the quality of the material used. There's no need to worry about the dress expanding after wash or loosing its color.
    4. On time. I have made 3 purchases at this shop within a period of 1 month. As I usually make my purchase on Friday or over the weekend, they can only mail it to me on Monday and I am always very glad when I receive my package on Wednesday - showing that there is no delay in mailing the items!

All in all, I have been very pleased with the quality of the items and the service and will definitely introduce friends to this site! :)

    2. New Asia Bar
       19 Nov 2010 at 10:30 pm
    zihui zihui says:

This bar is located at the top of Swissotel. Being the highest building in Singapore (or not?), it inevitably commands the highest power of best views in town. When I stepped out of the lift on the 70th floor of the hotel, I was impressed by the magnificent view ahead of me. One little spoiler was that there were steps down to Equinox, and steps up to New Asia Bar. In my mind, I thought they could have been more considerate to remove the steps (especially for ladies in super high heels who probably would frequent the Bar) or to have the sound from heels on the wooden steps insulated by carpet.

Stepped into the Bar, was rather impressed. But on hindsight, I think I was more impressed by the view out the full-length glass window than the place per se. It gives me the feeling like they can't decide if they should be a bar, chill-out place for drinks or a club. They have a floor area that's too small for dancing for too big as a corridor-walking space; they have couches and coffee tables that's good for putting drinks but difficult to eat from. At the same time, they've got bar counters and a couple of bar stools and tables around the place. They have quite a range of alcohol but they also serve pizzas, burgers and light snacks - and only wooden chopsticks or fingers for utensils, no forks or knives.

Sat at a comfortable couch with a window view. Must say I was lucky, there was only one table that wasn't reserved and the couple at the window just left, so I could take over that table. The whole time I was really awed by the view. Must say it was truly spectacular and if you're looking for a chill-out place, book a table early and head right up to the top of Swissotel!

For drinks, I got an Equinox Blue - ladies' favourite I was told. Fruity, punchy, but not mixed very well. The alcohol was right at the bottom. Was it a cocktail or just layers of liquid? But the blue curacao in drinks never fail to make the drink appear better than it is. Good presentation I guess, and in a cool glass with a tilted base!

For food, we had a seafood platter and a Wagyu Beef burger, with onion rings and both came with potato wedges.

It was really difficult to eat the burger. It was bigger than a double Big Mac. And it didn't help that they only served wooden chopsticks. The Burger was $48 and tasted fine, just that for the name - Wagyu beef - I was really expecting better beef. Only that I felt like I was eating beef patty with foie gras texture. I really can't decide if I had the better end of the deal or not.

The seafood platter (can't remember the price) was rather pathetic. 2 sticks of fish, 1 stick of prawn, 1 stick of squids, some wedges and that's it. So much for a platter. I only tried the squid and found it rather tasteless though chewy - disappointing.

Service was substandard for what you might expect at a "cool bar" at Swissotel. The waiter who brought us our food was really polite but there were other waitresses at the entrance were just loitering around the bar without bothering to attend to us, apart from one lady who gave us the menus we requested and walked away. I was rather unimpressed by this, given that the bar was evidently crowded by waitresses! Not even one out of, at least, 5 of them could attend to us.

On the whole, I really liked the view up at the bar and find it a great place to hang out. Just have to call early for reservations and next time, I would really avoid ordering food next time. Maybe a pizza would be the safest (with regards to taste and ease of eating). But great view, great great view. Worth a visit, at least once!

I would give the place 3.5 instead of 3.

Have eaten at this shop some years ago, perhaps in 2008. What's not changed is that they still open till really late, which was why I would frequent this shop when I had the habit of going out for supper. At that time, they had not taken over the units to the left and right of it. But now, they have expanded to at least double its size 2 years ago! Business is good, indeed. Food was reasonably priced too, but now that I made another trip back to this shop, I don't really have any intention of going back again...

Everytime I went, I would have their mee sua. Occasionally I would try their egg omelette and all, the usual zi-char thing. But I believe most people go there for its mee sua.

Based on the review above, mee sua used to be $3.50 a bowl. But now, it's $4.00 a bowl. I guess with inflation plus the high demand for their food, it's no surprise they have increased the price. But the price is not all that has changed... I noticed that their soup still has the herbal taste, but it used to be more pepper-ish. And they no longer bother about the presentation - they don't put chinese parsley on it anymore. Small thing, yes. But if you look at just a bowl of dark brown soup, it does look pretty gross... And now, maybe I've grown a little bigger or something, the noodles look so much less than before... But if I try not to compare the past and now, I guess the mee sua is still not bad. A unique herbal taste that's not too strong, instead gives it its very tasty flavour. I have yet to see a shop that sells mee sua that can attract so many people at wee hours of the night!

But if you're in a bad mood today, I would advise against going to this shop. Why? Service - very bad in fact. They refuse to take your orders at your table (apart from the drinks, which is a separate business I think); they are not very polite and seem more like they're too busy to bother about losing one small business from you; they can't be bothered to have anything more with you, than to just take your order, serve your food and collect your money.

The place is dirty too. Sometimes it even makes me doubt their stall is up to hygiene standards, but since I haven't had any stomach-upset, I guess there is not cause for concern (yet). I wonder what happened to the locals who used to be there (whom I think is the boss). Food used to taste a little better, place seemed to be a little less inhospitable. Now it is staffed by at least 10 chinese nationals who make the atmosphere seem a little different...

For the price and food it is still worth going.
For the cleanliness and service, plus my previous impression of the place, I doubt I'll be going back there very much...

Please note that this is actually a food delivery service!

A third party delivery service that delivers food from food outlets that don’t! I chanced upon this website when I was surfing the web for food delivery. Have tried using their service 3 times now and while I’m happy with the fact that they deliver food on behalf of restaurants they don’t, I think their service does have room for improvement.

The first time I called them, it was on a weekday night at around 7pm. Food came about 45 min later. I had no qualms about that since it also happened to be around a festive season then.
The second time I called, it was about 6pm on a Sunday evening. I called at least 7 times and never once did I get anyone on the line even though the phone was ringing. The calls would ring till the line gets cut off automatically. Another 3 times, I couldn’t even get the call through at all! I gave up calling. There was no way I was going to get dinner on time.

The third time I called, it was one week after the previous time. I thought I’d try again since they really are the only ones who can deliver Thai Express to my place… This time someone answered the call almost immediately. I asked the call operator if deliveries could be ordered for in advance and delivered a few hours later. She said the food will be delivered between 7pm and 7.30pm. Satisfied with that timing, I called back again later with my order. 5 dishes from Thai Express turned out to be $53. Exclusive of all additional charges it would have been $40.50 only (!).

Apparently charges are met out in such a way:
Original bill $1 charge for orders under $40 / $3 for orders over $40 7% GST delivery charge depending on area 10% service charge.

I live in the east and delivery charges were $5 for me. And there is also a minimum order of $25.

I ordered my food at 5pm or so, thinking it would come at 7 – 7.30pm and thought that would have been a good timing, but the food was delivered at 6.30pm! It was way too early and by the time it was dinner time, the food turned cold already…
Not too happy with their delivery time but I guess delivery can never be at a time of your request... If not for the fact that they’re the only one doing such delivery, I doubt I’ll order from them again.

    zihui zihui says:

What better way to enjoy life like a gourmet than to go for buffets! And being in Singapore, aren't we just spoilt for choice, with all the wonderful buffets at the hotels like the Straits Kitchen, The Line etc. Having ever heard a little something about a buffet at Merchant Court, I thought this place would be worth a try. Further, at something like $26.90 per pax for lunch buffet, I thought it was one of the cheaper places with, what I thought was, good food. So off we go!

Upon reaching there, parking was convenient, perhaps because it was on a weekday. For dining in, we got parking rebate too. So free parking!

The Cafe was rather packed when we got there - 45 min before the close of the buffet line. Managed to get ourselves a table for two by the window, nearer to the main section of the buffet. The table wasn't properly laid when we were ushered in, and in a rush to give us our table, the waitress actually forgot to place all items on the table. When I asked her for it, she didn't quite understand me either, as her English wasn't very strong. Also, the table wasn't very clean, which I usually dislike as it didn't allow me to put my belongings on the table without dirtying it. Ice water was provided but wasn't regularly refilled even when the Cafe wasn't that busy (as people were gradually leaving the place). I was rather disappointed with their service, considering how I would expect much more from a hotel cafe.

Service is of course secondary at a dining place since what matters more is of course the food. Well, the food was not that amazing either. The buffet line had a spread of dessert, rice, dishes, noodles, japansese stuff, salad and soup. Sounds like a lot, but I think the desserts could have made a good spread on its own. In other words, I found the main course disappointing.

    Rice and dishes
It was just a small variety of approximately 8 different dishes or so I think. Some peranakan and international dish e.g. roast duck slices, chicken, prawn (something like sweet and sour style), kang kong (that was actually pretty bad in my opinion), sea cucumber (over cooked) etc. And I thought I would be stuffing myself silly with that spread of food.

    Noodles
It's just one Abalone Mushroom noodle. The soup tasted weird, noodles weren't boiled long enough hence was a little hard still. And there was something like Top Shell (I wouldn't believe that there would have been abalone) in the soup that tasted awful.

    Salads, soup and others
Salad was nothing much, just a bit of greens with sauce. Soup.. if I did not recall wrongly, there was only one Crab Bisque that didn't smell appetizing (and so I didn't try, especially being so turned off by the rice and dishes). Sushi was bad - rice was too dry and sticky. There was one thing good though - it was something Japanese but I never figured what it was.

    Desserts
It seems like this could have been the most sumptuous part of the buffet. Desserts of different styles. You have your cakes and fruits; you also have the hot soup desserts like Tang Yuan. There was also apple crumble and bread and butter pudding.

Up to this stage, the food began to seem rather boring to me and so I didn't have much appetite for more. But the bread and butter pudding and apple crumble was not too bad.

It is unfortunate the food wasn't up to standard. I don't think I will be going back for the lunch buffet anymore...

I have walked pass this restaurant several times, but often rather settle for the Crystal Jade Palace Restaurant as I never really thought my taste buds catered to the Korean flavour.

This time round, upon looking at the menu, I thought perhaps there could be something that suits my taste. No harm trying a new place, so my dinner partner and I left our names down for 2 at this restaurant.

There wasn’t really a queue at about 6.20pm and we were told that we had to wait 15 – 20 min for a table. I was rather surprised as it was still early and there was only one couple before me. Nonetheless, we waited.

20 min later, we were told the same thing again. Being a hungry customer who has been told to wait 20 min earlier on, this irritated me. Later, I realized that the wait was due to the fact that majority of the tables were “reserved” for groups who were coming in at 6.45pm or 7pm.

Another thing I noticed was a display at the “rostrum” at the entrance informing diners that members will be seated before non-members. While I understand the idea of giving priority and privileges to members of the restaurant, when I saw the queue and compared it to the number of seats available in the restaurant, I thought it was the most ridiculous thing to do.

Finally, we got a table, only because someone who reserved it didn’t turn up. The table was aligned for company of 8 in a room that, if necessary, could be partitioned for a private function. It was extremely weird because we had another couple join us not long later, and it felt like any privacy or peace was invaded by them due to the close proximity of our tables. The whole restaurant wasn’t very spacious either, only enough space for a single line of people to walk.

Waiting time and space aside, the food and service was not too bad. We ordered a plate of BBQ beef (choice of barbequing it yourself or get the kitchen to do it), spicy seafood noodles, seafood pancake and the Korean mixed rice (I think it’s called Bibimbap). Apart from the food we ordered, there are also small plates of complimentary appetizers such as Kimchi, egg, bean sprout and some others which I couldn’t really identify. Though not a Korean food fan, I thought the Kimchi was not too bad in that it didn’t taste sour or like it had gone bad.

We chose to barbeque the beef ourselves. The restaurant serves a rather generous portion of very tasty and evenly-marinated beef. The beef is cut into thin slices and cooks relatively fast thus allowing us to cook as and when we please, and eat it while it’s hot. The beef is also very tender. It was absolutely delicious!

I thought the seafood pancake was quite good too. It looks like omelette with squid and spring onions but I doubt it’s egg. It comes with a sauce that looks like soya sauce and enhances the flavour of the pancake.

The seafood noodles was not as spicy as I hoped for it to be. It looked like tomyum soup but not as tasty. I was told it tasted like the usual Korean instant noodles.

All in all, we spent almost $90 for 2 pax. We ordered too much and didn’t finish the rice and noodles. I would like ordering 1 bowl of noodle or rice/ 2 bowls of plain rice instead would have been more than sufficient. That would have lowered our cost by about $18.

On the whole, quite a positive experience. I left thinking Korean food could be quite good after all. Will definitely go back there to try the soup and have more BBQ meat!

I am generally a less adventurous glutton who likes to stay in my comfort zone when it comes to the things I put in my mouth. As such, during the several times I've been to Ajisen Ramen, I've always sticked to eating things like their Volcano Ramen.

While their ramen hasn't always been exceptionally great, it does taste reasonable and they do serve a relatively large portion (for me that is). Nonetheless, their ramen is a little pricey in my opinion, hovering around 14 bucks if i'm not wrong. Of course they do have some special deals in which you get a free side dish, but it's still not worth 14-16 bucks to me, probably because I end up wasting quite a lot of food.

So this time round, I decided to try something else for a change. Usually, the case is that I stick to my comfort zone while other people out with me explore new stuff which taste really awesome. And when I try to be "adventurous", I fail badly. I cannot believe my lack of taste for food, so to speak, and decided to gamble with my food. I ordered an Unagi bento (something I recently became fond of and realize the sauce is actually real yummy if done the right way!), prawns with mayonnaise and sushi (which I can't remember what exactly it is already).

Usually, I'd comment on each individual item I tried. But now, I have one general comment before I go into a breakdown of the items - it's the worst Japanese food I've ever had.

Unagi bento - sauce was diluted. Unagi tasted undercooked or something. It had a disgusting rubber-y feeling of which even pinching part of the meat off felt gross.

Prawn with mayonnaise - It's supposed to be fried. Well it was, but it seemed like it was fried yesterday, and reheated today!

Sushi - I don't even need to know what sushi this is, but it's something that I cannot eat. Not the rice alone, not the seaweed alone, not the fillings alone. The rice looked like cooked japanese rice that was pounded till it became 1/4 it's original size. Totally looking delectable, NOT. And I never knew the taste of seaweed could ever go wrong. But they proved me wrong.

I cannot believe what bad luck I have I think I should just stick to my comfort zone.

I think we paid about $50ish in total, for 2 of us. It includes everything above and one more Unagi bento (yes double whammy).

It was horrid. Needless to say, never eating non-ramen stuff at Ajisen again.

After enjoying a wonderful plate of Escargots during my holiday, I've been wondering if it's actually possible to find reasonably-priced Escargots in Singapore. And when I saw Ma Maison, and how cheap the Escargots actually were, I couldn't wait to go there!

So when I got there, there was a rather short but slow-moving queue, so people: do remember to make reservations!
However, if you didn't mind sitting at the bar, they'd allow you to do that just so you don't have to wait too long. And that was what I did. Nothing unpleasant nor special about that experience.

I understand that the place is a French-Jap fusion restaurant, but I personally didn't quite like the decor of the place. The dark lightings and wooden furnishing gave it a french/ country-style indeed, perhaps that explains the "French" part. However, I thought everything you see didn't quite blend well with the atmosphere and cuisine (so to speak) served.

Service was not too bad there, people were rather friendly and prompt in bringing up your food. We didn't have to wait too long for our orders. Additional plates and appropriate utensils were also provided to make it easier to eat the Escargots and anything else we ordered. We were also given this giant brass key that we would need when making payment. It was a rather cool idea and it was so huge that you can't lose it. But that chunky thing was kinda in the way too, considering how bar-tops were not made for big plates.

I can't remember the exact name of the things I ordered, but I remember there being a plate of Escargots, some Mexican (or spanish?) seafood rice and a bowl of Omu rice.

The Escargots had a fairly strong garlic and butter taste, and was very oily. Did not taste very fresh to me either.

The seafood rice, too, had the similar garlic and butter taste. Makes me wonder if they use the exact same wok/pan to cook everything. I didn't like the appearance of the dish. It gave me the feeling of being full upon looking at it. But apart from the abovementioned, taste-wise, it was still fairly decent.

My favourite was probably the simple tomato sauce-based Omu rice. I would advise anyone who orders that to finish it while it's still hot and tasting good.

In general, I have one comment for almost everything I had: being the worse fan of garlic, everything in the food had to have such strong garlic taste! So I guess I didn't really enjoy everything.. Nonetheless, I am sure if you share the exact opposite sentiments as I do, this place could be a place worth trying! And if you're on some sort of a budget, try to limit yourself to just one dish per person because the bill can come up to quite abit, including the GST and all. We paid $90 for two, unfortunately.

Good food, I'd go back there again,

    if not for this:

Was there on that fateful Valentine's Saturday. Not surprisingly, the place was packed. But I honestly reckon this is the kind of crowd to expect every weekend. I found this place on a particularly famous blog which rated the place 4.5/5 for steamboat and barbeque. Having that in mind, I went all the way to Clementi with high hopes and big appetite, and also hoping that I'd be able to get a table if I went there half an hour earlier.

Well, fat hope about the table. I had to wait approximately 15 minutes more that I expected to. I can understand that though, because people there were indulging in the free flow of barbeque, cooked food, steamboat and drinks (yes and drinks! Hotpot Culture/ the old Marina Bay doesn't give you that) so much that no one seemed to be leaving.

When I finally got my table, I couldn't do any barbequeing though, due to the fact that tables at Fortune Cuisine are divided into 2 sections, one with barbeque and one without. So their solution to this problem is that we get the meat hand it over to any friendly waiter who will barbeque them for us. Not bad an idea. At least your clothes don't get stinked up too bad. Judging from the crowd, I knew that we'd have to wait a long time to get our barbequed food, so the first thing we did, even before our steamboat soup came, was to grab a huge plate of meat for barbequeing.

After about 15 minutes, a waiter brought one plate to our table. Technically, it was only half a portion of what we ordered. Being there for the first time, we thought it probably isn't out yet. After awhile, we decided that perhaps they forgot (it's only normal, given the crowd that day), so we went to take another plate. And another plate. And another plate . . . . .

Ok, so nothing's coming. It's been an hour. And it has been 4 plates at least already. We highlighted this issue to quite a number of waiters around but our reply was: "Oh we're very busy today, it will be coming soon." And finally when we could wait no more, we told yet another waiter that our food has not come despite us being told so many times that it will be coming soon. Apparently, that statement drew some attention to our table. Not wanting to cause any more commotion, the waiter referred us to the manager. Upon hearing our unhappiness and how reluctant we are to pay the full price for 2, the manager gave us a discounted price and we left.

To put all that above in a nutshell, it was simply an outcome of poor organization skills.
    1) The queue at the doorstep was disorganized - the manager himself didn't know who came first, who's doing the "walk-in", who has reserved a table.
    2) The whole thing about giving the waiters your plate of meat and expecting it to come back is quite.. unpredictable too. You just never know if they got your table right (because they don't make it a point to label the plate with your table numbers before collecting another plate along the way) or if they'll even come for your plate (because you're supposed to leave it on a tray obscurely places beside your table) when they're all so busy and probably even under-staff.

Well, all that above was effectively just my complain of the "bad service" I received from my hour and a half or so there. Nonetheless, I will not totally discredit the place by subtly weaving the plus points of the restaurant amidst my complaints and unambiguously italicizing them.

I must say the food was good. The little meat I had was either marinated for a long time or MSG-ful, ie tasty. It was truly a spread - crispy salmon, bee hoon, curry, satay (chicken/mutton/pork), beef slices, pork slices, sausages, the usual steamboat ingredients, some sushi, tempura, free flow of juices/ soft drinks and more (I probably missed some out)! And I think it's $20ish/pax. Rather worth the money if you go there on an uber empty stomach.

I'd say worth a try. I'd give it 3.5/5 but since there isn't, I guess I'll round it off to 4 so that people (like me) who simply spot the stars will not think it's a bad place.
(though I won't be going back there in the near future since I live rather far away)

    Note to readers:
If you are wondering why there are 2 shops - namely Chiang Mai Palace and AnyThai - under the address "18 Circular Road", it is because they have changed management, but the shop still sells Thai food.

This whole lane in Circular Road is rather amazing. If not for the fact that I work around the area, I doubt I'd ever know the existence of this place!

AnyThai is, among many others, a decent and cheap restaurant to go eat at. I would think they have even better deals during lunch hour so as to attract the lunch crowd.

I was eating at the restaurant with a Thai, and the comment made was that the food is rather authentic!

I had for myself a real good $6.90 deal. It came with rice (choice of white rice or pineapple rice), a small dish of oyster sauce vegetable, 2 spring rolls (not the tiny tiny one! It could have been 10cm long!), a bowl of tom yam soup and a lime juice. Yes, all that for only $6.90, believe it or not!

I thought everything in the set meal was really good, albeit a little too small a portion of soup. The soup came in a regular sized bowl (similar to rice bowls at chinese restaurants) with a nominal amount of fish and prawns. Not much ingredients so to speak. But apart from that, the other dishes came in a sizeable portion that was not too harmful to your stomach. I like it because it allows you a variety of dishes even if you are eating alone!

Apart from that, there are a few other variations of the $6.90 meal, as well as a $4.90 rice set that's basically just rice and a side dish (perhaps meat).

A friend ordered the Pineapple Rice, and to my (pleasant) surprise, the rice actually did come in a Pineapple! I understand that it is common practice, but look at it this way: a small shop that's not very eye-catching, serving food that's relatively cheap, actually serves pineapple rice in a pineapple!
It is pleasant all right, that people still do care about the authenticity of Thai food in Singapore.

Of course, there were many other things available, such as Black Pepper beef rice that was apparently very good, as the Thai who was having lunch with me said. I do not doubt those words even though I did not try it!

If you go there at lunch, bear with them sometimes if service is bad. The waiters there are very hospitable, thus making your dining experience much more enjoyable. But during lunch they do get rather busy and so are a little slow in bringing up your food.

I would go back there for lunch again, I think it's a really good deal. But I do wonder if they have such good dinner deals too or not. Anybody..?
