Looking for a place to get sports apparels, with better bargains than you can get from sole distributors? Here's the place! (But don't have too high hopes though.)

Personally, I would go all the way to the West (i'm at the east) to buy my sports shoes because there's a variety of designs to select from. Even the older designs can be found there too. Also, it is normally slightly cheaper than at the Nike/ Adidas retail stores for the new designs, and about 15% (or more) cheaper for the older designs! Apart from shoes, of course you can get your sportswear, socks, bottles and bags too. Yes, slightly cheaper for some! I was just there today and I got 15% off a bag that was released only recently!

Other than that, they've got food stalls strategically situated at random places in the mall, convenient for "busy-shoppers". There are also several shops that sells casual wear, instead of just sports wear.

Nonetheless, I find it pretty hard to find your way about. The shops are not very organized and it's normally hard to remember where you've been unless you remember the shop name. Also, some of the shops seem to be under the same owner, so prices are pretty standard there. However with the high traffic flow, service is pretty poor there I must say.

Parking's a problem and it's extremely expensive. On a regular Saturday, 2.5 hours in the afternoon could cost you $5.10. You'd understand why I'd say it's expensive when you see the condition of the carpark.

    Minus the carpark problem, it's a place worth going to look for your sports apparels, and at a good deal! (;

    22. Botak Jones (Bedok)

    zihui zihui says:

After hearing soooo much about Botak Jones at AMK (yes there are other outlets, which I only knew of TODAY), I was delighted to hear that there's one at Bedok! ie, very near me (; And so, dragging along a food-enthusiast like myself, we headed down as soon as we could, with much anticipation.

It was almost 2pm by the time we got there. All right, face it, I was disappointed because I thought we'd be seeing a little shop instead of that-stall-at-the-food-court-under-that-block. But that seems to be the trend, somehow. If you heard of, there's Blackboard doing that too.

So anyway, we got a menu each and sat down, trying to decide on what to eat. I must say BJ is trying hard to sound/look cool, but they're trying a little too hard. What with the "dawg"s in the menu and short narratives in Comic Sans, font size 14 words, it was really an eye sore for me. All that effort put in to inject that little bit of "humour" into the menu could have been converted to beautifying the menu which reminds my friend of our school's lecture notes, mistreated.

Eventually, I ordered a Cajun Chicken - supposedly the 2nd most popular meal. It came with a generous portion of Spicy Fries and Coleslaw. To be honest, I didn't quite like the idea of eating from a black plate as it felt as though the plate could have been dirty (but you'll never know). The chicken had a layer of melted cheese and cajun sauce. I thought the portion of the meat was reasonable, only that it was a tad too dry. But it went pretty well with the cheese and sauce, only that I thought they could drizzle more sauce on the chicken (isn't that why it's Cajun chicken?). The coleslaw had a weird, bitter after-taste. The fries were not too bad, just that it would have been better if it were tastier. I paid $7.50 for it.

With the price I paid, I'd say it was rather worth it. Large portion, enough to fill your tummy. Not too bad for the price I guess, but don't go with too high expectations in terms of quality of food. What with all the hoo-ha about BJ, some may probably find it over-rated by the time they've gotten down to trying it. Well, at least I did. (Ah, but I think I'd still rate it a 3.5 / 5 for the price and fairly satisfactory service.)

A new magazine up in the market! I think it's about the 4th issue now, or maybe a couple more. Can't remember. I heard about this magazine only from someone else. Guess they didn't really do much publicity. Nonetheless, after browsing through it, I was rather impressed. This is by far the most extensive shopping magazine, and I mean SHOPPING man. The girls will love it! It has pictures of clothes/ bags/ accessories etc. Everything a girl needs. What I really like about it also is that it doesn't contain those long and (sometimes) boring life-story articles and stuff. I mean, hey, it's a SHOPPING magazine!

However, I must say that everything in this magazine is pretty expensive. Even those special deals you get from each issue of the magazine are not exactly that worth the money. I guess it's a magazine targetted at single working women who has a higher propensity to indulge on these things and pamper themselves. I'm a student myself and I think this magazine doesn't quite suit me. The most I can do with it would be to just look. Quite sad you know..

But whatever right! It's a darn cool shopping mag and I want it! So during the Yebber fashion fusion last year, I made my order for a year-long subscription! Excited, I thought I'd be getting my next issue in my mailbox soon! As you can see, it's 30th January now. One more day to the end of the month. But I do not have my magazine yet. So what am I supposed to do with those special deals that I'm interested in using when the magazines come?

From what I heard from people at Project Smitten, they have their own delivery system. Well, from what I see now, I guess I can only say that it is not an efficient one...

Have you been to Courts at Tampines and ate at O'Briens? It's situated, rather awkwardly, in the middle of nowhere at the 3rd level. I've always thought that O'Briens was quite a good place for a coffee and a sandwich. My idea of relaxing, along with a book. Seeing O'Briens out of nowhere and after walking for so long and feeling so bored, I thought it would have been good to get a drink and rest!

You'd see at the counter an on-going promotion - Mix & Match. It's a choice of 3 salads, one sandwich filling and a can of pepsi at a whopping price of $6.50 only (of course it's cheap considering the cost of eating out nowadays)!

Unfortunately, not judge a place by the number of outlets it has; nor food by its price. I thought the sandwich was utterly disappointing. I chose the chicken mayo filling and the chicken was awful. It lacked the mayo taste and the chicken bits tasted like instant chicken fillet or something. Not fresh. Neither did the mixed vegetables nor lettuce look fresh. The coleslaw was not cut up into small bits (which I prefer) and had a weird and bitter after-taste. But the portion was quite big and it would have been good enough for a quick lunch or so. And it was a good thing that you get a can of pepsi free! I guess that's a relatively good deal for a $6.50 set.

Nonetheless, I'd never eat there again. Maybe I'd try O'Briens elsewhere to double-check their standards. But I'd say this was quite an awful experience.

Just beside Subway, Chicago's Steakhouse looks like a good place for good western food. On top of that, the word "steakhouse" immediately catches my attention! First thing you do, of course, is to check out the prices on the menu. Fortunate for people like me, the price is actually absolutely reasonable! Plus, the waiters there are really friendly and welcoming, it just makes you want to walk right in.

I sat down and took my time trying to decide on what to eat. They have main courses like steaks, chicken, fish and lamb! What a variety! I would say their Meat Lovers' dish really did look enticing though I didn't take that. As someone who's hunting for cheap and good steak, I was almost certain before I stepped in that I was gonna order steak. Seeing that a Sirloin Steak with mushroom sauce(70z) was only $10.90, I thought "hey! why not right?" The steak is available in 3 different portions and comes with baked potato and fresh greens too.

One thing I really like about the place is that despite the fact that they were pretty packed that day, your orders still came up fast. But to be honest, fast doesn't mean good.

Although I was real surprised when my steak came up so soon, one look at it and I was thoroughly disappointed. For $10.90, the steak being more than palm size was really a good bargain. However, it was not done very well. I ordered a medium rare but I think I got myself a medium instead. I feel that the thickness of the steak really makes a difference and if dining places wanna make their steak look bigger on the surface, even though it's thinner, (which was what they did), they should know how to do their steaks well too, in order to prevent over-cooking. The mushroom sauce tasted rather ordinary also, with one small slice of shitake mushroom on the steak, as though to say: This really is mushroom sauce, in case you're wondering. The sides were rather pathetic. The baked potato was not even bigger than an apple. Yes, it's more like the size of a plum or prune. Pathetic serving of sour cream and no bacon bits (until you ask for it). The fresh greens was about 5 pieces of french beans, 1 cauliflower and 3 pieces of carrots. Pathetic, once again..

However, the non-steak stuff my friends ordered seemed rather appetizing. It looks more value for money too. At a dollar more, the Fish and Chips does look more filling and appealing than the steak I had (at a steakhouse).

Oh and you get free iced water if you dine there. Not bad eh?

Because of the reasonable prices, I would still consider dining here again but I will not order steaks anymore. Of course if you had a bigger budget, you could try their premium steaks, it could be better. But on the whole, the above was my experience with a $10.90 steak. Disappointing.

I've heard that the steamboat place at Marina Bay will be replaced soon. That means no more steamboat. But no fret! There's always Yuki Yaki!

My first visit to Yuki Yaki gave me the impression that this was very similar to those outdoor steamboat places at Marina Bay. However, what's better is that they are air-conditioned, you have more comfortable seats (though I won't say it's that suitable for big groups), your cooked food are within an arm's length away. Choose from 3 different kinds of soup base for your steamboat - Tom Yam, Chicken and.. one more I forgot.

Also, they have pork, chicken and beef for you to choose from, each done in about 4 different seasonings. Other than that, they have the basic ingredients that you put into your soup during steamboat. Crab stick, sausages, fishball etc. For people who would like to have noodles/ rice to go with your food, it's also provided. Should you need any garnishing such as spring onions, or condiments such as soya sauce/ chilli etc, it's all provided too. Plus, the buffet also includes drinks and limited variety of sushi.

I must say that the sushi was bad. Probably left out too long, it was pretty dry and hard. As for the meat, it wasn't seasoned very well. As everything was pretty much do-it-yourself, there wasn't much service to talk about.

For students who are really big eaters, I would think that this place is worth going. For me, I paid the student price of $16.90 if I'm not wrong. And for adults it's $21.90 . (I think the prices are around here but I can't remember if this is the right price..) This is the lunch buffet. The " " means there's GST too. Didn't quite like the idea of that because there really wasn't much service to begin with. From the day I'm not a student anymore, I will stop considering eating here.

If you like buffet, you could give this place a try. But I personally feel it's just all right, nothing really fantastic...

Ah, what do I say. With the interior and name and uber-many-branches-around-in-such-a-short-period-of-time, it just made me feel like I just had to try this place. (Despite my friend warning me against going to the one at Siglap because of the quality of food.) With eating out being general more expensive now, I'd go to this place because I was expecting it to be slightly cheaper. Hey, it is a cafe after all right.

So I got myself a plate of noodles. I can't quite remember what it was called, but I guess they're all so similar, differentiating it is not that necessary. The noodles are like instant noodles! Along with two stalks of vegetables, a sunny side up egg and (seemingly canned) diced pork. Looks really ordinary, like you can do it yourself at home too. That was about $6 I think.

My friend ordered porridge. Again, I can't remember what it was called. I tried one mouth and I told myself if and when I were to come back again, I will never order this. It was just rice and water and it tasted like Fish Slice soup with rice in it. Yes, the kind you can get from hawker centres. It was $9.90 if I'm not wrong.

The food wasn't horrible nor inedible, but it was so ordinary that you'd feel the pinch just having to pay for the stuff there.

What was more appalling was that when the waitress served us our drink, she seemed so uncertain that she had to ask us if that was tea. I can't believe she did that. You can be new there, you can be unsure of what you're doing, but you really should not bring a cup of drink to your customer and hesitate to give it to them right before them.

On the whole, I really think it’s not that worth eating here. No doubt it’s like “fast-food” and it’s a relatively cheaper place to eat at, it still isn’t worth paying this kind of money for such service and food quality.

Have you stepped into a cinema feeling a little weird about the positioning of the screen? Today was the first time I felt that way.

As usual, we'd queue up and get our tickets. I had the choice of sitting at the side but further from the screen, or sitting in the middle but nearer to the screen. I thought, hey, no difference right? So I took the seats at the side.

I stepped into Cinema 4 and looked around. The lights were still lit and the place looked clean and fine. No weird smell, nothing. Nice.. Time to sit down and just wait for the show! But wait.. there's something amiss... And that's when I realized that the screen was rather centralized and it was no wider than the middle block of seats. Rather weird I'd say as I noticed that at most cinemas, the screens would usually span almost across the wall. Also, the seats were not positioned in a suitable angle that allowed us to face the screen better.

I guess it's just a little weird. I would say it would have been better if the seats were slanted abit more or the screen was bigger. But other than that, it was comfortable (:

Min Jiang is a, if I'm not wrong, Sze Chuan restaurant that used to be at Goodwood Park Hotel. With that kind of reputation, I guess everyone has high expectations of that place! Located at Rochester Park, it gives a feeling of exclusivity (though I do wonder how they survive..), with the valet parking, choice of indoor/outdoor seats and old British house settings.

Food at Min Jiang isn't ridiculously expensive, considering their reputation. However, I would say it's a little on the steep side, considering the quality.

Dim Sum is from $4.50 a basket, with 3 pieces. This means $1.50 a piece, which is really expensive.
The Char Siew Bao tasted quite different. It doesn't have the usual sweet taste and it didn't look very appetizing due to the dark-brownish colour of the meat.
Their Steamed Baby Pork Ribs in Black Bean Sauce was sub-standard to me. It was not pork ribs to begin with, it was more like pork-fat ribs. It was rather unsightly.
Then there were other things like this Dumpling in Sweet and Spicy sauce (I can't remember the actual name). It was pretty unique and I liked it because it was spicy. However it was a really oily dish - chilli oil I think.
One of my favourite was the Deep Fried Beancurd Skin Roll with Japanese Seaweed . The beancurd skin was very crispy and the filling was abit like fishcake. I think it contained some prawn-cake thing? I couldn't qutie tell =x
And if you want to try something more, you can try their famous Appetizer Platter that consists of a crispy eel coated with sesame seed, lobster in egg white (in an edible party cup!), crispy diced chicken (a little like popcorn chicken) and a huge piece of scallop coated in sweet and spicy sauce. I thought this was great just that the eel was exceptionally hard, not something I saw before nor really fancy. But it'll still be good if you can't quite decide on what exactly to eat. A starters will never go wrong!
Other dishes I tried includes Black Pepper Beef which was really tender but the meat was a tad too sweet and String Beans which was kind of salty. Would have been good if it was a little spicy though.
A MUST EAT is their Peking Duck ! They have 3 ways of eating it. One is the duck skin dipped in sugar. I've never done this but I realize that the sugar goes exceptionally well with the skin! The only thing is that chewing on the crispy skin was like a mini oil-explosion in your mouth. All the oil absorbed by the skin bursts in your mouth (eww). Tastes good, but unhealthy. Secondly, you can do it the traditional way. Sweet sauce, spring onion and duck wrapped in flour crepe. Another way is similar, just that there's an addition of garlic paste in it. Though the flour crepe was supposed to be "paper thin", it wasn't that thin. But I quite liked it because at least when you chew, you get to taste the full flavour of each component in your mouth.

Last but not least, desserts! The others on the list didn't quite fancy me, so I decided on something more boring – Yang Zhi Gan Lu (with a scoop of Vanilla ice cream). It tasted pretty normal, like what you can get from many other places. The mango base wasn’t that sweet; the pomelo as well. My cousin had Durian Pudding. I think that was awesome! The pudding seemed to be made from lots of durian meat plus a little bit of whatever-it-takes-to-make-the-pudding. With every bite, you can taste the fresh durian meat in it, and you can even see it! Wonderful I must say.. Really really good and fragrant :D

I give the place credit for the wonderful dessert! But truth betold, I don’t think it’s worth revisiting the place. If you wanna explore, do try! But it’s not quite worth the money…

Some pictures here, taken from somewhere else.

    30. Eden Cafe

    zihui zihui says:

Was at the eat-out session with many other Yebbers! Eden Cafe's a really nice place to go to I must say, just that it seems to be quite inconvenient to get there if you don't drive, and if you drive it's also inconvenient to get a parking lot!

When you step into Eden, you'll probably feel rather comfortable in the place due to the rather homely interior and soft lightings. Also, feel welcomed by the friendly owner, Clement, who ensures that your experience there be as good as it can be.

As there were up to 7 dishes (excluding the desserts) and on the whole I thought that all the dishes were unique and creative in terms of taste and appearance.

Personally, I really liked the Rosemary Rosepetal Garlic Beef and Balsamic Strawberry Beef. Of course, I'm the sort that really likes beef, however these dishes were cooked in a different style which you probably won't taste elsewhere, especially the Strawberry Beef. It's literally cooked with the strawberries and you can taste the sweetness of it in every bite of the juicy beef. Also, the beef is very well cooked and tender despite the fact that thin slices of beef tend to cook faster.

On top of that, there's the Seedless Grape Chicken in a rock-hard bread. Of course the bread's not meant for you to eat because, like I said, it's rock-hard! You can try.. but it's not that advisable. (I've tried.. haha) But the taste of the chicken was wonderful as it integrated the sweet taste of the grape, just that it would have been better if the chicken wasn't so dry.

Then there was also the Black Sesame Mushroom Pasta. The pasta is made by the owner himself. I like the texture of the pasta, however as the owner says, this is a dish that you either like it or not at all. For me, I didn't like it actually. The sesame flavour does not appeal to me; I actually found it hard to accept the fusion of oriental and italian flavours.

Lastly, it was the dessert. My favourite was the Wine Tea Floral Fruit Jellos! It wasn't too sweet and had a tinge of alcohol and fruit taste. A pity it was so tiny! I could have ten at a shot! Haha.. But Clement was so generous as to give us an additional 2 other items for dessert as he was worried we weren't full! How nice of him! :)

Well basically, this session at Eden was a great experience me. I'm not an adventurous person when it comes to food and so I was actually quite skeptical of what's coming up. However, it was interesting to learn that food can be done in so many different ways, even with flowers (even the flowers can be so interesting in itself)! I would like to go back again, but I will probably be ordering the same things. But for adventurous people, this place is a must-try!
