wow ... never thought that it have already two comments since the staff told us that the shop is only two months old !!!
We discover this place by chance as we were just window shopping in Raffles place !
So the boss ( i didn't even realise his is the boss until we asked )is standing outside the shop and welcome us with a warm greeting of japanese, KOBANWA ! :)
We browse through the menu and i was attracted to the curry rice !!! But we just eaten some foods so we decided to walk few more rounds first before we decided whether to try the food or not.
OK, in the end we walked in !!! haha ...which is why i can make the review :D
I ordered the CURRY RICE !!! $10.80 and a sesame as dessert $4
While my friend ordered a salmon creamy omu rice $12.80 and a honey toast bread with ice-cream for her dessert.
Well, all is nice just that i would prefer more for my friend salmon omu rice !!! Especially the sauce ...
Oya , almost forget to mention that the rice set also come with salad ! SEE so good
To sum up, i will go back and try for more meals ^ ^
A lazy weekend afternoon is spend at Starbucks @ Holland Village. What I like about Starbucks is their free WiFi via Wireless@SG which enables me to sip my coffee and blog at the same time.
Not being a coffee lover didn't deter me from this place as I fell in love with their Cafe Mocha (less whip) since poly days. The coffee is smooth and the chocolate syrup adds a dimension that seeks to satisfy the non-coffee lover in me.
I have also recently fell in love with their Banana Nut Muffin that is made from banana puree and chopped walnuts. Do remember to ask them to heat it up for you - that's when you will be overwhelmed by the flavoursome banana aroma when you have a bite to it!
Had another bout of Thai food craving and didn't fancy braving the terrible parking(and exorbitant drink prices) at First Thai so decided to try out P&P Thai Food, which is just a 15 min drive from my house. Formerly located at a coffeeshop along Veerasamy Road in Little India, P&P's claim to fame is its authentic Thai food and the various newspaper writeups are a testament to that.
Located under a block of HDBs at Geylang Bahru, P&P occupies a rather small and inconspicuous unit which faces the main road. The place is done up simply with white washed wall and limited tables, probably at about 10 tops, including those placed along the pavement. Air conditioning here is at a premium, with barely cool air whispering out of 2 air conditioning units.
Mango Salad - A nice appetiser would have started the meal just right, but the mango salad, though spicy, didn't taste out of the ordinary. Everything was overwhelmed by the spiciness. Also, 6 bucks does seem a tad pricey for just some shredded vegetables and fruit.
Tom Yam Soup - Served up in a small claypot, the tom yam soup was actually quite good. Clear spicy broth with an overhanging heavy dosage of zest that didn't weigh down too much on the palate. One thing I found odd about the soup was the inclusion of slices of hotdog - a sign of cost cutting?
Phad Thai - I found P&P's Phad Thai comparable to the one I had at First Thai just a couple of weeks back except that the glass noodles used in the former were slightly finer than usual. Both were of the wet variant but the prawns in P&P's offering weren't exactly fresh and that marred the experience for me. I still stand by the Phad Thai from Sweet Salty Spicy.
Olive Fried Rice - The undisputed star of our meal, the humble olive fried rice. Served with sides of egg, cashew nuts and a mixture of what seemed like dried shrimp and pork, the rice was fragrant and very well fried sans the oil with a lingering tinge of olive. I would have gone for seconds if not for the rather steep pricing ($7 for 1 scoop).
Fried Kang Kong - What looked like an ordinary dish turned out to be something rather top notch. The Kang Kong had a wok hei taste to it and was rather spicy although it didn't look the part. Only gripe I had was the excessive salt content, which can be a little overwhelming.
P&P Crispy Pork - I would have expected more from a dish bearing the name of the restaurant but sadly it came across as rather normal, if not on the salty side. The flour was crispy without being too oily but the meat did seem a little too fatty at certain parts, which made me a tad nervous about my health.
Durian Sticky Rice - I was looking forward to this delectable dessert and all hopes for a humongous portion were dashed when it came served in a small leaf shaped plate. The glutinous rice was a tad savoury with lots of bite while the durian flesh was sweet but rather runny. Drizzled with coconut milk, the entire dish made for a very nice ending. However $10 for such a small portion is a rip off in my humble opinion.
$57 for 3 pax isn't exactly expensive but I wouldn't deem it cheap either. Food quality is actually quite decent and personally I prefer it to First Thai. Price wise, both are comparable but service and ambience at P&P is definitely better. When we finished my dinner at about 7pm on a Sunday evening, there were still a few tables empty so I guess having no queues is a plus point too. One thing to note though, P&P doesn't serve free ice water. Its 50 cents for a refillable cup.
Just opened at basement of Plaza Singapura on August 1st. This is the place to go for quick takeaway meals. They offer curry rice and curry udon sets where you can choose to have the curry mild or spicy. They also sell bento set which includes potato salad, vegetable sald, rice, fukujinzuke (japanese pickles) and takuan (japanese radish).
Mum bought 2 sets for dinner last night. Seafood Croquette Curry Udon Set ($5.90) and Ebi Unagi Bento Set ($8.90).
We had the sets an hour later when we reached home. The food was not too cold for consumption yet. It was still a little warm when we ate the food.
Mum's first verdict after tasting the rice in her bento set "Not nice!" The rice didn't have the usual stickiness of japanese rice and was tasteless. Not even taste of the usual rice fragrant. But the ebi and unagi was still acceptable. Though we felt that the unagi was a tad too small. The salads that came with the bento set was not bad. Nothing to wow about.
The Curry Udon was still alright for me. I don't recall tasting any japanese curry recently and have forgotten how it should taste like. But this one has quite a strong smell which I don't really enjoy. The seafood croquette was quite sad. There was only a small piece of prawn in it. I remembered the lady told me its a mixed of seafood. But I couldn't taste any.
Overall I feel that the food was not up to standard. Perhaps they're still new in such creations. Hope they'll improve as they gain more experience. Will probably give it another try few months later.
My friend brought me to this restaurant for dinner last weekend. She told me that the prices were quite reasonable and the portion of the food was quite big.
And what she said was true.
The restaurant looked bright and nice. We were welcomed by a polite waitress.
The table was kind of small. Nevertheless, we did not order much food that day.
I ordered a hot green tea and a Sukiyaki Gozen set. The Sukiyaki Gozen cost only $16.90. I used the word "only" because I found it very worth the price compared to other Japanese restaurants.
The set consisted of the Sukiyaki pot itself, plain udon, white rice, salmon sashimi, a small bowl of lotus roots, miso soup, and 2 pieces of fresh orange.
The beef in the pot was very sufficient for me (might be more than sufficient for some). And the soup in the pot was really nice and tasty. I added udon into the soup as well.
The salmon sashimi pieces were thick and fresh.
I was quite satisfied with my meal and was really very full after that.
Having heard much good things about the Indulge from online forums and websites, i decided to make a trip down that same day i had my anniversary with my gf. In fact, this came after Braise and was an early dinner for us. Touted as a reasonably priced and good gourmet food restaurant, it had alot to live up to. Did it meet expectations though?
Indulge Yourself ($6.50) - Indulge Special ($7.50) - The interior is decorated with art pieces, soft lighting and simple chairs for a simplistic yet comfortable touch. Fronting the door is the bar were drinks are prepared while the restaurant has a seating capacity of about 30 people. The drinks were recommended by the waiter who informed that the drinks were made using real juice. The Indulge Yourself drink is made of half mango and half strawberry juice which was actually decent but the novelty wears off after a while. The Indulge special has mango, watermelon and a blue coral mix which was also cooling but extremely sweet.
Crispy Prawn Tossed with garlic mayo and sunflower seeds - Quite a mouthful in terms of a name but in actuality, it has much in common with the wasabi prawn. The batter is thin and crispy while the mayo is decidedly fragrant enough to warrant a taste. I did find the prawns a tad too small and the serving size too little but thats also testament to me wanting to have more of the dish.
Szechuan Sweet and Spicy Soup - Having not gotten the mild pumpkin soup ready in the kitchen, the chef nicely told us of the alternative of having a special szechuan soup which i feel is actually pretty good. Sweet, sour and spicy, it has some of the Szechuan flavor one might come to expect. Its not very strong though so it comes across as just right. I could have a second bowl of this easily.
Pan Seared Salmon in Kung Po Sauce - We asked to change the lemon sauce salmon for the pan seared kung po salmon as it was one of the winning dishes this restaurant has produced for the Singapore excellent food awards. Alas, i beg to understand how this dish could ever win? The salmon was pan fried too dry with the meat being dry, hard and lacking taste. No doubt the kung po sauce is excellent but the salmon itself totally disappointed me and my gf. Not to mention the size of the salmon was decidedly small. Its quite a let down actually.
Grilled Ribeye With Braised Mushroom - Another award winning dish for excellent food awards, i was also disappointed as the meat was tasteless and could only pass for average at best. The presentation is pretty good but tastewise, it leaves much to be desired. In fact, i was constantly given the impression that these dishes were sold short as they were included in a budget set dinner menu but thats just me i suppose.
Passion Fruit Panna Cotta With Chocolate Ice Cream - The panna cotta is blurred off in the back of the picture. The ice cream is average at best. Supermarket quality if i'm not wrong but the panna cotta tasted fresh, sweet and smooth enough to recommend. Now if they could give a full cup of it instead of 1/3 cup, that would be great
The final bill clocked in at $72.75 for 2 people. Its a real mixed bag but to me, my hopes were built too high and the drop too steep to feel the meal justified.
WAS being persuaded by my friend to go to Hong kong cafe for a meal .
Ok , so my friend and i went there for dinner, the price wise is reasonable. And the portion is quite big :D ! that's a good thing !
SO what surprised is how they served their drink in metal mug ! haha. It's kind of unglam to be served in the cafe as you see the environment is so comfortable ... However, it goes well since the restaurant call HONG KONG CAFE ! HAHA
For the service !!! ICHIBAN ! their staffs is friendly and really respone well to our requirements . Thumb up !
Well overall, the food is nice , service is nice, and atmosphere is nice ! Especially they played my favourite songs from S.H.E !!! WOW !!!
I have make an reservation with hotpot cuulture after reviewing the webpage and recommendation from yebber .
However, to my disappoint as what Pharque had said the food is not as delicious as it is .
On sunday morning i went there with my friend for porridge buffet. And all of us were baffled , as all the food is like SO CHEAP ! i mean the cost to make the food. EXAMPLES : SALTED EGG , SALTED VEGETABLE , HOTDOG IN sweet and sour sauce, The meats only have the three-layer meat , fried duck's meat, fried fish ( TO be frank : All the meat taste below than average , i can get a better one at coffee shop !
END UP , all our mood were destroyed ! ( we were holding a birthday celebration for one of my friends.
SO FOR THE MONEY MaTTER , although you will think it will be worth it .
Visited True Spa for the 2nd time and got a decent massage, my friendly therapist must've been their only saving grace. I haven't read the previous reviews, if I'd read them I'd've never signed up 2 months ago.
I waited a MONTH to get this appointment. It just so happened that I was free on a weekday and they answered their phone after THREE days of calling and me phoning True Yoga at Raffles City to tell them, "your branch is not answering the phone." Last month when I tried to book, I was put on the waiting list and nobody ever called me back. They kept saying they would call a week before the appointment to confirm but the confirmation never came. The consultant gave me her handphone number but she has NEVER answered the phone in her life. I brought all my documents (spa contract, receipts, etc) today because I planned to go directly to CASE if they did not give me the slot I requested.
I don't think it is unreasonable to say True Spa's the lousiest excuse for a Spa I've ever been to. I've been to the Aspara chain, St Regis, etc. But never have my towels smelt of renovation(which they're undergoing) and I've never had problems making a booking at other spas. Previously when I tried to book they said they were full, I thought that was fine. Then they told me their Couples' Rooms were undergoing refurbishment and I had to wait. So I waited.
The consultant had the cheek to tell me that I had to book 3 weeks in advance for the Couples' Room. So I went and booked 3 weeks in advance, but they said they could not confirm because "the next month's booking slots have not opened." But they STILL could not confirm anything even just 5 days prior to the timing booked! (I had been calling them DAILY) They claimed they were "upgrading the computer system." I think someone who'd never used a computer before would've probably been able to allocate slots MUCH faster using pen and paper! Each time I called they'd say it would be known the next day. Eventually I asked whether they had slots the next day and they gave me a slot which I took. (If I hadn't taken it, God knows how long I'd have to wait)
Mind you, it wasn't always like this. Before I joined True Spa and bought the package , they would always say I was free to come ANY TIME for my complimentary massage. I was informed by my consultant that they had 4 Couples Rooms ("so we never have a shortage!") and 15 other treatment rooms ("see, because we want our members to have enough slots, we work 365 days a year just call us to book and we will answer") when I signed up. But those things never happened, and the consultant (at least he was polite and seemed willing to help enough) left, so they gave me this other lady who I have only spoken to ONCE in my life, when she called to say "there are no slots for you, you should book 3 weeks in advance."
So sometimes I really wonder if True Spa can be brought to CASE. In their defense, they can say they're just full. But I also think that since so many people have so many complaints, what True Spa is doing can be considered more or less equivalent to cheating individual consumers of their money since we aren't allowed to use what we've paid for. It's as good as them running away with people's money, for what good is a spa package that cannot be used? Even if they say it is simply because they have difficulties, fact remains that they never conveyed any issues to members. Imagine, if a bank employee or lawyer takes your money then refuses to answer the phone, says you can't make an appointment to withdraw it, and you don't ever get to use the services, isn't that enough to give you the impression he ran away with your money?
What's the difference between being there and avoiding your customers, and taking their money and running? None to the consumer, as far as they're concerned. How are they supposed to know you haven't fled the country? The only thing True Spa hasn't done is shut down their main office, because it sure seems like they've shut down their phones and computers. (because even if those things are there, the staff aren't confirming bookings on them, and apparently they think phones are ringing accessories not meant to be answered)
I wouldn't be surprised if one day we find that the 16th floor of Ngee Ann City has become a blank space and everything's disappeared. If a company, spa or organization can't even guarantee they're not cheating customers of their money, then what credibility do they have left? There's no guarantee they won't just disappear or close down. For goodness sake, even spas in the heartlands ANSWER their phones and confirm bookings! True Spa can't even compare to your neighbourhood spa (which would probably not give you the impression you're being cheated), much less compete with the likes of The Aspara, The Asian Spa, or St Regis' Remede Spa (which only ask for a credit card guarantee, and don't get you to pay beforehand- the prices aren't really worth the difference either for the rubbish you get at True Spa); because no matter how good your therapists or rooms are, everything's trash if you can't provide decent service by answering your phone, treating people right, and letting them BOOK slots for treatments they have already paid for. (a joke: the consultant I spoke to had never heard of St Regis, and said "you think their service will be better than ours?" my reply: "they're a 6-star spa with prices DOUBLE what you're offering me, and that's with an invitation card. what d'you think?")
Oh but for first-timers who got invited for the complimentary massage? Don't worry, they'll definitely be around for you! After all, how can True Spa deny another poor gullible person (like me, and so many others) the opportunity to buy a package (read: be cheated), try to make a booking (read: make them distressed and frustrated), tell them there's no slots (read: pretend they didn't cheat their money and make it look legitimate), make them book 3 weeks in advance and not confirm (let them wait, hopefully they'll forget about the money they lost) then finally give them a booking (so they don't go to CASE or take legal action) and let the cycle start all over again?
Cheers to waiting another 3 weeks for my next appointment, and for the whole process to repeat itself. So if you're looking to be distressed, angered, stood up, given a massage, and then to go through the whole thing all over again (ie. cheated) I'd say True Spa's the place for you. Then again, I think no one's that dumb.
p.s. i take down EVERY single time i called, the names of who i spoke to, etc. In case anyone wants to go to CASE (i probably will eventually) or if anyone wants to file a suit and needs more evidence. it'd be great if someone could record their phone calls, which i think everyone should really do.
