    1421. Emperor’s Soup
       02 Jul 2008 at 11:41 pm
    feizhu feizhu says:

Emperor's Soup - a restaurant headed by Executive Chef Edmond Lui, whose stellar resume includes a decade of service at Pine Court, stints at Marina Mandarin, Lei Garden and the now defunct Boulevard Hotel. Purportedly well versed in the art of high end Cantonese cuisine, Chef Lui aims to offer restaurant quality food at neighbourhood prices.

Nestled in the former seedy neighbourhood of Joo Chiat just down the road from Canton Wok and Joo Heng, Emperor's Soup occupies a small unit space that probably seats about 30 pax, so if you are coming on weekends for dinner, a reservation might be a good thing to have. The interior is simply done up with red curtains and wooden racks exhibiting replica Chinese antiques and ornaments. Instrumental Chinese music wafts through the air from a portable stereo system located near the entrance to the washroom.

Double Boiled Shark Bone Soup with Mushroom and Bamboo Shoots & Fish Maw with Sea Cucumber and Shark's Fin Broth - At first glance, I thought the bowl holding the milky broth would be the shark bone soup but it turned out to be the shark's fin broth, which was really quite a deviation from the norm, especially when the shark bone soup turned out brownish in colour. This non milky shark bone soup is definitely a first for me and it tasted exactly like shark's fin soup but much starchier. Very average if you ask me.
The averageness carried on to the shark's fin broth, which came across as a little too milky for my liking. I couldn't actually make out any sea cucumber so either they missed it out or I wasn't looking hard enough.

Soft Shell Crab with Minced Pork - I honestly didn't quite take to this dish although I must admit that the soft shell crab was quite well fried. The minced pork or 肉松 was crispy and not too sweet as well but personally I found it overly oily from the amount of oil the deep fried batter absorbed. Sans the oil, I would probably have liked it a whole lot more.

Superior Bird's Nest with Fresh Milk - I thought I had landed myself a bargain at $8 for superior bird's nest. But as the adage goes, you get what you pay for. Served atop a bed of egg white cooked with milk, the bird's nest was barely a teaspoonful which wasn't even sufficient to gauge the quality of it (not that I know much about differentiating the various grades of bird's nest). One peeve I have with this dish was the raw fishy smell that emitted from the egg white, although the egg white came across as rather bland.

Fried Crispy Duck - I must say that the crispy duck was quite decent, crisp on the outside yet tender on the inside. It tasted uncannily like KFC's original chicken except that this was duck. What I liked about the duck was that it tasted fresh. No traces of reused oil which is prevalent in a lot of such deep fried dishes. It also helped that the duck was boneless.

Steamed Beancurd and Scallop in Black Bean Sauce - Smooth quivery beancurd topped with thinly sliced scallops and covered with a mild black bean sauce. The verdict? Decent enough but would have been better if the scallops actually had some taste in them.

A slightly above average meal set the 2 of us back by almost $75, which doesn't quite equate value for money. Service was decent though. To be brutally honest, I didn't feel like an emperor after the meal, more like a pauper really. So much for the name.

    See all my pictures here.

Had a dinner there with my family. The crowds there are mostly families, since it's a neighbourhood area.

Considering the crowd there, the service staff were still not bad. Not too slow.

I like it that I could just order by clicking at the computer beside the table. Need not wait for the staff to come and take order.

We took some sushi from the conveyor belt like lobster salad sushi, chuka kurage sushi, salmon skin sushi etc. All tasted not bad. Oh yeah, not forgeting the free flow preserved ginger :P

We also ordered from the menu:

Fried tofu - $2.99. Kind of expensive for 2 pieces of tofu. But I think everywhere else is about the same.

Chicken katsu cheese - $6.99. Would recommend this. kind of different. I like the thick cheese :) Abit of crisp on top.

Salmon sashimi (we ordered 3 plates) - $4.99. My family's all-time favourite. Salmon sashimis are thick and fresh. Taste shiok with the lemon, and also with the light soy sauce and wasabi.

Kimuchi ramen - $8.99. Would also recommend this for those who like kimchi. The soup is tasty. I also like the chicken and the egg in it.

Overall we spent around $80 for 5 people.

We were all satisfied with the meal. So it's quite good. Will go there again for family dinner. =)

    1423. Michelangelo’s

    TrumPat TrumPat says:

Opened since September 1995, Michelangelo's is the flagship restaurant of Chef Angelo Sanelli's Michelangelo's Restaurant Group. It is strategically located in Holland Village, which is an expatriate enclave, with its sister restaurants Bentfork Cooking School, Original Sin and Sistina Ristorante in close proximity. Zambuca Italian Restaurant and Bar at Pan Pacific Singapore also fall under the same group.

Having my office strategically located around Holland Village area really spoil us for choice when it comes to lunch. But of course, going to nice restaurant usually occur on special restaurant, that is for a birthday celebration & another colleague's farewell.

I guess the best picks in an Italian restaurant is pasta and there's acctually a handful of choices to pick from. Set lunches are available as well, as $25 , which came with either a soup of the day or a mushroom with egg kind of appetiser (sorry, didn't note down the exact name of it). I ordered the latter and it was pretty good, with huge chunks of mushrooms and it went perfectly well with the watercres and venegar dressing. However, choice of main course for the set was very limited, with either one type of pasta or another beef cheek dish. Mine was the pasta, serving was not very big, just nice for my small appetite. The set meal was then completed with a chocolate mouse with jelly and a cup of coffee. Somehow, I do find the combination of sweet chocolate mousse with citrous jelly a bit weird.

But well, considering that a typical main course on the ala carte menu goes in the range of $20 , the set meal is pretty worth it. It'll be even more of a good deal if you have an AMEX card or Citibank card because there's a 1-for-1 promotion for set lunches with AMEX card and for Citibank card, it's a 1-for-1 promotion for selected ala carte main course during lunch hour. But mind you, both card can't be used at the same time.

Other than the food, service was really good. My glass was constantly topped up with iced water!

I have tried Spizza both in the restaurant itself and via the home delivery a few times.

Definitely things taste better when just out of the oven.
However, I think the delivery is also not bad. I ordered delivery for Mother's Day~And my mom liked it alot. As we all agreed, we'd prefer ordering from Spizza than others like Pizzahut and Canadian Pizza.

I have tried ordering delivery for the following:

    Item Name: Adriano
Item Description: Smoked Salmon With Onion Rings And Capers
    Item Price: $11
I love the smoked salmon...tasty~~woot! They come in big pieces too~

    Item Name: Caligola
Item Description: Crispy Calamari With “Pizzaiola” Sauce
    Item Price: $11
Yup quite nice, crispy outside, tender inside.

    Item Name: Claudia
Item Description: Tomato, Bell Peppers, Zucchini, Eggplants, Artichokes, Mushrooms
My mom wanted something with more vegetables. She was satisfied with this pizza and enjoyed it.

    Item Name: Juliana
Item Description: Tomato, Mozzarella, Cooked Ham, Pineapple
This is like our usual Hawaiian pizza. It's nice too~

    Item Name: Lasagna
    Item Description: Traditional Beef Lasagna
    Item Price: $16
    Quite nice too.

    Item Name: Spaghetti & Penne
    Item Description: With Bolognese
    Item Price: $16
    Nice...

The customer service staff answering the hotline are also friendly, patient and polite. They wld give recommendations and wait patiently for my decisions on the phone.

I have been here twice and I find it average.

Personally I love tomyam. So I would definitely order Sen Lek Tom Yum Talay - Stick Noodles with Seafood in Tom Yum Soup.

The soup is great. The spicyness and the sourness is just right. Authentic tom yam soup...the clear type. I like~~
The prawns taste fresh and "bouncy". haha...

I've also tried the Khao Phat Supparod Talay - Thailand’s Pineapple Rice Fried with Seafood. It's good too. But they can do better with more taste in the rice.

As a side dish, I've tried Pla Muek Tod Krob - Thai Fried Squid. Not too bad, quite tasty, the but the squid is kind of tough to chew.

The place itself is quite cramp. I dislike the seats - not comfortable enough. The staff there (even the supervisor) are also quite noisy, especially at the counter.

I find the prices not really worth it too. Quite expensive.

$15 per pax. Normal soft drinks cost around $1 or $1 plus each.

I have eaten here 3 times. The standard is still good.

The variety is not bad. The foods to choose from are fresh and they include seafoods like clams, mussels, crabs, prawns, etc. A few types of mushrooms like clamshell mushroom, enoki (golden needle mushrooms), straw mushroom, wood ear, oyster mushrooms etc. And some other vegetables, fishballs, sotong balls, crabmeat, egg...etc etc.

There are 5 soups to choose from - si chuan, fish, chicken, mala, and tom yam. You can choose a maximum of 4 types of soups. My all-time favorite is tom yam!! They will come and refill your soup and soup paste anytime.

You can also choose the level of spicyness.

The soups are very nice and tasty. (I am drooling now...)

The service is also very good. Staff are attentive, patient and friendly.

The place itself is quite ok. You can sit in the air-conditioned indoors, or can sit outdoors.

One thing I don't really like is that I tend to become very thirsty after eating. Guess it's the msg??

But overall, I will definitely go back again :)

Yayhayy~~Finally went into this shop to try their desserts. To my surprise, their desserts did not disappoint me. I read that this shop is from Taiwan. I'd tried a few shaved ice desserts elsewhere but they disappointed me alot. Compared to what I'd eaten in Taipei some years ago, those shaved ice desserts I tried in Singapore really sucked- quantity too little, used artificial syrup, no fruits at all, not worth the price totally.

But hey! So glad to go into this shop~~They have real fruits on the desserts! And not just a few pieces!
Tried 2 of their desserts only. Wish I could try more. But nevermind, I will return soon!

Ice Blended Fresh Mango Sherbet- $4.50
Damn nice!! Sherbet made of fresh mango! Fresh mango toppings! And the iceblended ice itself is made of mango!

Super Fresh Strawberry with Sherbet and Milk Shaved Ice- $6.50
Sherbet made of strawberry! Fresh strawberries as toppings! Milk shaved ice...But I find it not milky enough. These lost a little to the ones I had eaten in Taipei, but still nice! =)

And also, the atmosphere is quite peaceful because of it's location I guess.

The service is not bad. Staff are attentive.

***Update: Tried Fresh durian and fresh mango and mango sherbet with milk today~~!!! Tasted heavenly!!! So shiok!!! I ordered large size for $8.50.

    1428. Threadless Tees

    I heart threadless!! I'm now a fan!

After hearing so much about threadless, I've been wanting to get my hands on one! But was relunctant at first as I wasn't sure of the sizes I should get. But when I heard about the sale that was on a month ago, I quickly placed my order to test the sizes out!

As I only know about the sales on the very last day, in the very last few hours, I had to rush my purchase. Quickly went through the Size chart and took out my favorite tshirt to measure the sizes. By the time I was done, many of the designs I wanted were already sold out!!

Managed to place my order for 2 of the designs and paid for the express delivery service. In less than 2 weeks, I got my threadless in my mailbox!

I wore them both already and I'm loving it! The material is soft but not sloppish-type. Great for the humid weather here in Singapore!

If you've not tried threadless tee, you better do so soon!

    I'm loving it!

I find that the shoes in this shop are really better looking than average. There are many different styles - sweet, cool, elegant etc.
I believe they are of good quality. The designs are quite exquisite.
Most of all, there are many flats in this shop. =D
Since I'm quite tall and can't wear heels much, I'm happy to see many flats here.

Don't be mistaken, there are many heels here too. And they look beautiful!! How I wish I can wear them...aahh...

Just some time ago, my colleague and I went to that shop and saw shoes that we liked. But our sizes were sold out. The shop owner checked with the other branches and found our sizes available. She asked if we would like to collect the shoes from the other branches, or have them transferred here. Well we had them transferred, and the shop owner called us up when the shoes were here. She'd reserve the shoes for us till the next evening.

It was not compulsory for us to buy even when transferred. If we were not satisfied with the shoes, we didn't have to buy them.

Anyway my colleague and I were both satisfied. So there! Our new shoes in the photos I have attached =D
    My blue flats cost $49.90.
My colleague's white shoes with slight heels cost $59.90.

Wearing them made our feet slightly painful, but bearable. Guess they will be "seasoned" soon.

The one thing I don't like about this shop is that the prices are not cheap.

    1430. American Eagle

This is one of my favorite online store! I like American Eagles stuff alot, and the first time I bought clothes from there was when I in Boston, USA. After that I fell in love with their clothes. I find that their cuttings suit me alot, the material quality is good, and the clothes very wearable (as in won't really go out of trend). Singapore doesn't have AE... =( So I have to go to their online store. I have already bought from the online store twice.

The tank tops are not too plain and not too exaggerating. I like their lace trim tanks, which have adjustable straps, lace trim on neck and hem, and have hidden shelf bra too. I specially like their embroidered eagle logo lo!

I also bought their Aerie T-shirts, which are fitting and comfortable, and don't make me feel warm too.

Based on the USD exchange rate now, I find the prices quite reasonable.

I have never tried their shipping so I can't comment on it. I guess it's not cheap anyway.

Well I have a friend staying in Boston, thus after ordering the clothes online to her address, I'd get her to mail the stuff to me, or get her parents to bring back for me when they go visit her =P

My new clothes will be arriving on 3rd July! I'd upload the photos by then!
