I have heard of this brand of donuts for sometime especially from those who had been to Indonesia. They had been saying that this brand of donuts one of the best there. Some even say it is better than Krispy Kreme. Wah. This is a very big thing to say. Finally I had the chance to taste it when they open their first flagship store in the newly create Raffles City Basement. No need to search for it, just follow the smell, you are able to find the store already.

I was there and have to say that Singaporeans are quick to try all things new. There was a long queue going on, people trying out their new donuts. Other then selling their donuts, they also open a café where you can drink their drinks while eating and smelling their donuts. Wahahaha. Their café is a bit small, can only seat a small number of people.

Well you can read from the above post on how they sell/pack their donuts. A person is in charge of a few flavors of donuts, so you inform him/her what you want then she will grab whatever is within reach, if not, they will pass it to the next person to get the donuts from you. This will go on until you reach the cashier at the end of the line. I did not have to wait long but I did not managed to get ot buy all the flavors that I want.

They got quite a number of different flavors of donuts, at least 10 plus over flavors. From the normal almond glazed one to special ones that have crème inside the donuts. I tried a few and I shall use the almond glazed donuts as comparison. From the outlook, it does look like any other donuts (the same kind) that are selling from other donuts shops. My first bite into it, the donut is soft and simply melts in the mouth. The almond glazed is not too sweet. Pretty good. I dare say one of the best. For other flavors like

Alcapone which got lots of almond nuts with white chocolate, but my mum prefer Donut Factory version.

Tiramisu which is loaded with tiramisu cream inside. A bit sweet, not for those who don’t like cream.

Whynut which inside is filled with peanut butter and the donut is topped with white and milk chocolate.

Well after tasting a few times, I think some of the donuts are actually quite good while some of them are just average. To me it is just another donut company that came into Singapore to grab a slice of the pie. I will still go back to eat the almond glazes provided there is no queue. I think it is sooner or later you will see that they will pop up all over the little island of ours.

This place is a well hidden café in an ulu location. If HFB is not here to mention about it, I think I will never discover a place like this. Hee… Thks bro. All thks to him, FZ and bobo, I got the chance to visit this place. It is inside this building, Balmoral Plaza along Bukit Timah Road. Well I least I know I got a direct bus from my house now. Hee….

When we reached, I got this brought back to the 80s feeling, because everything there is so retro (as put by Claudia). They got both outdoor (read: smoking) and indoor seats. Outdoor seats can be very noisy as it is next to the road where traffic can get quite heavy and noisy at times. For the indoor decoration, it is a very spacious with quite a number of seats and a few seats in the middle of a room. The counter and the kitchen took up half of the space there. Very simple designed. I loved the seats there. How should I put it? Hmm…. It is very “A&W” if you understand what I meant. Wahahahaha.
Since it is called Wafflestown, they have to sell waffles, all different kinds of waffles and of course they also sell fried chicken as well. Yum Yum! We ordered 2 piece fried chicken set and 2 waffles.

2 pieces fried chicken set @ $6.70 per set: When it came to our table, it looks like those chicken sets that are sold across all the western stalls in those coffee shops. It looks simple and I have to say not impressive on presentation. On the plate, there were 2 pieces of medium sized fried chicken, with 2 side dishes of coleslaw and French fries. I have to say that looks can be deceiving. The fried chicken came piping hot, once I tear the meat apart, the steam can be seen. Even though, some people did complain that it is a bit oily, but hey, it is fried chicken, supposed to be oily. Wahahahaha! I always like fried chicken. I liked their fried chicken; it is crispy on the outside, but moist and juicy on the meat inside. The chicken is also seasoned slightly, making the chicken tasty as well. The coleslaw is average; however it has all the big chucks of vegetables inside, making it very crunchy. The fries are normal, nothing fanciful.

Now to the stars of the day, WAFFLES @ $4.90 each! We ordered Blueberry waffles and Blackberry waffles. Instead of the normal round waffles, both came in rectangular shapes. With a scoop of ice cream on top and covered with blue and black berrys and whipped cream along the sides. First on the waffles, they are FANTASTIC! One of the best I ever tasted! It is crispy on the outside but soft in the inside. It had big squares in it so that can hold the ice cream inside as well. The blueberries and blackberries are also good on their own. They are not too sweet but full of their own flavors, they came in big sized berries as well. Together they are a great combination. Based on the waffles alone, it is enough to make me come back for more!

Expect for the bit ulu location which is my only complain. I think I will be back for more if possible! Go and give it a try!

    1763. Curry Favor

    feizhu feizhu says:

Had a craving for Japanese curry so dropped by Curry Favor's newly opened outlet at Novena Square for dinner. Curry Favor, which has its flagship outlet at Stamford House, purportedly dishes out one of the best authentic Japanese curries in Singapore and South East Asia. Quite a statement I must say.

The interior is simply done up with ample distance between tables which allows for limited privacy. Not that it was really necessary as the place was quite dead on a Saturday evening, with only 4 tables occupied.

Rosu Katsu (Pork) Curry - Curry Favor offers the flexibility of ordering half portions for certain dishes, which caters to small eaters or people who tend to opt for a lighter meal. The half portion of Rosu Katsu came with about 5 slices of succulent and not overly deep fried pork chops and a regular serving of rice. With a name like Curry Favor, it is rather obvious that the curry should take centre stage. And this is where it falters, well almost. The curry was light and sweet ( a little too sweet in fact) but didn't posses the wow factor. It lacked the fragrance as well. I would say its very decent but certainly not the best in Singapore or South East Asia.

Filet Pork Stewed Curry - This was a full sized order and honestly, the amount of pork fillets in it didn't justify the price. There seemed to be more potato cubes and carrots than pork fillets. Sure, the fillets were tender and full of bite and the curry thick and lightly sweet. But as with the Rosu Katsu, the curry lacked the oomph factor and fragrance, although I must say I did enjoy the overall dish quite a bit.

A rather filling but hardly satisfying dinner for 2 cost about $35 ($30 with $5 discount). Filling because there's a lot of starch in the dishes, rice, potato and curry. But having said that, food quality is still reasonably above average but prices could drop a notch or two. It does help that service is good as well.

    See all my pictures here.

Many would have known by now that I've been suffering from teeth problems for a few weeks now. I had been the patient of a popular dental chain until recently when the last job by them was poorly done and was very painful.

The last job started to give me problems and I asked around for recommendations. My colleague gave me the address of this clinic and I booked an appointment. There are four inhouse dentists so it's quite easy to get an appointment.

I went for my first visit which was pretty normal. A Dr. Chan (I think), a lady dentist, tended to me and she explained that she needed to do a re-filling. She was gentle and professional but certainly didn't waste any time with me. I was out in a jiffy so that she could move on to the next patient. No complaints I guess. But she did mention that the refilling might not help things as the damage might be too bad. So she told me to go back if the pain continues.

True enough, the pain came back fast and more furious. So I called them and managed to get an appointment with Dr. Leonard Tan in a few days.

Dr. Tan is the reason why I'm writing this review really. With the pain I was having I was really afraid when I went into the room as my gums and teeth were really sensitive at that point. But Dr. Tan was really gentle and I felt at ease in the chair. He was really careful when probing the affected area and didn't poke too hard until he was sure I wouldn't scream. (heh) Then he took me over for an X-ray and while waiting for the X-ray results, he patiently explained to me my options if the results were BAD.

He clearly explained what the root canal treatment was and told me exactly how much it cost. He didn't harp on it and told me I have other options like having the problem extracted.

When the results came back and were not conclusive, he advised me to tolerate the pain a bit and told me to do a number of things to see if they spark off unbearable pain which will point to damaged nerves.

What I really liked was how he wasn't money-minded and gave me my options and let me make the choice. He didn't charge me for this consultation and he gave me painkillers for free too. He only charged me $15 for the X-ray. Very reasonable isn't it?

Immensely happy with the service, I think I will make Dr. Tan my regular dentist. My colleague also recommended Dr. Zhou whom she said had plenty of experience.

I've watched a few movies at GV Vivo, almost all the tickets are booked online since I don't really like queuing up. The place's a maze but I really really like the gold class. :)

    My gold class review: http://www.yebber.com/review/gv-gold-class-vivocity/

The only thing I hate about GV at vivocity is the VISA plat priority queue. The counter is NEVER opened. Hubby and I went there to buy tickets and twice the counter is closed but the queue is opening for queuing. I'm not sure if you get what I'm saying. haiz..

First time, we went there on a weekday night and there weren't many people, in fact that's no one in queue but hubby and I decide to go by the visa priority queue since it's straight and short and not long and curvy like the normal queue.

Another couple went into the normal queue after us. When the counter is free, the girl behind the counter decide to serve the other couple first even though we were there first!! I was really pissed not only because we're in the priority queue and hubby have already taken out the card but because we were there first! If they don't serve that queue, at least seal it up or move it away. We got so pissed we decide to go home and not watch movie that night.

Second time is yesterday afternoon (Sunday).
There was a queue at the normal queue but no queue at the priority queue, so hubby took out his Visa plat card and queued up at the priority queue. Some people queue behind us, which means we weren't the only people in the queue.

They(GV) served a few customers from the normal queue and after waiting for about 5mins, it seems that everyone behind the counter is ignoring all of us in the priority queue.

Hubby got a little pissed because it's the second time it's happening and we've never had that problem with other GVs. So he decide to ask for the manager, that's when the girl behind the counter asked if we're paying by visa in a "I'm really busy, if you're looking for trouble please stay away" tone. Hubby asked for the manager and she ask us if we're paying by visa again. I nearly wanted to tell her, no we're paying by hell-notes. That's how pissed I felt, but nah, I didn't say that lah.

When the manager came out he gave instructions to another staff before coming to the counter to talk to hubby. Hubby asked if the bank or visa is not giving them enough perks thus they are not operating the counter/queue, since it's not the first time that we were ignored. He (the manager) asked if we were paying by visa even before replying.

I feel really puzzled. If we weren't paying by Visa why are we queuing there? Do we have "don't know how to read" written on our faces??? Anyway the staffs and manager weren't apologetic at all, so we decide not to watch the movie and walked off.

I really like the place, but if it weren't for the poor attitude by their staffs I would have given them a much better rating. For now, it'll be a 2 star.

    Love this place!

Went for the first time with my friends. One of my friends live near the other branch so he took us to eat at this branch since it's nearer to school.

The staff is very friendly! (and maybe because I speak Malay/Indonesian.. Hahaha) You can choose to "hidang" which means you choose 4 to 5 dishes to eat together with your friends (and of course 1 plate of rice for each) or just eat "econ-rice-style", choosing various dishes to go with your 1 plate of rice. They serve rendangs, eggs, various vegetable plates, and super duper delicious tahu telor!

And it's soooo cheap. I usually only spend 4 dollars for a very fulfilling meal. My friend who ordered the most (plus some fishes and some other other things..) ended up spending only 7 dollars. Wow.

Once went there with ping.sg friends and they liked it a lot too!

Haven't gone there in a while. Will go there soon~~~

Nice concept, so-so food, too expensive...

If you have read some of my reviews you might already know that my boyfriend is a big sucker for Japanese food and since we like to eat together (it's like our favourite pastime as a couple. ahahaha), I agreed when he brought me to this Marche-like Japanese restaurant.

First impression.. Cool. Stalls offer different food.. And there are purikuras (photo sticker station) at the middle of the restaurant. Didn't try it though.

Went there twice and our orders were kinda the same. Omu rice.. Gyoza.. Omelette.. Some satays.. Hmm can't remember.. (yes we order a lottttttt)

The omu rice is like.. er... Rice with tomato ketchup. I know it's supposed to be some tomato rice, but really.. Tastes like rice dipped in tomato sauce. And we gotta wait so long.. About 7 minutes plus. Well I would have been able to agree had the restaurant not been empty (it was not "peak hour"). Same goes to other items. Gotta wait for minutes and minutes and minutes. It's getting irritating when you order a lot and expect to eat soon (and the restaurant is not crowded!) but told to wait wait and wait. Sigh..

Ended up with 30 plus bill. My wallet is not happy...

Love this shop! I frequent the one in The Cathay.

Tried it the first time because my friend forced me to buy the meesua. It was very nice! I don't like oyster though so I didn't eat the oyster. My boyfriend likes the crispy xxl chicken. However he (and I) are not allowed to eat deep fried food so often anymore so we don't buy it so often. I like the crepes! I always order the crepes. It's not too expensive but tastes really good.

Overall, I think it's nice ;) although can be sinful sometimes.. Find out how much calories are inside that crispy xxxxxl chicken. =P

While waiting for a couple of friends to arrive for lunch this afternoon, another lunch kaki and me decided to go for a sip of a much needed drink on a hot Sunday afternoon. Since scheduled lunch was around Katong/East Coast area, we settled on iced coffee @ Coffee Master Café in Katong Mall.

Situated right beside Awfully Chocolate, coffee lovers have a choice of al fresco seating right at the entrance of Katong Mall, or the simple and quaint indoors which seemed to bring time to a standstill while you are at it.

My kaki had a special order of Iced Mocha Mint Latte that was meant to be hot coffee. The mint flavour was barely delicate, which explains why this combination should only be drunk hot.

The Iced Hazelnut Mocha I had though was absolutely great! In the vein of the rest that I have drank before, the drink came with enough punch of the hazelnut essence, but what sets it apart from the rest was the smooth aftertaste that is gentle to your palate, that was lacking in most.

You can view more photos and other reviews @ His Food Blog.

On my family's previous dinner trip to My Mum's Place, we had spotted a few stalls beside it which we had meant to try. One such stall was Lau Hock Guan Kee Bak Kut Teh, which I was told, sold decent Bak Kut Teh. As with Tasty Penang just 2 doors down, Lau Hock Guan Kee is rather old school, opting for fans in favour of air conditioners. Read, it can get quite stuffy and warm if you choose to sit inside. Manned by a few old ladies, Lau Hock Guan Kee doesn't offer a menu unless you specifically request for it. The old ladies rattle off whatever's available and are very warm and hospitable, although in a rather loud sense. We had the Fried Baby Kailan with Oyster Sauce, Beancurd with Minced Meat and Bak Kut Teh.

The Fried Baby Kailan with Oyster Sauce was a little too "sweet" for me due to the excessive oyster sauce. The generous serving of fried shallots atop was a bonus and added flavour to the dish. Beancurd with Minced Meat might seem like an easy dish to prepare. Just get good beancurd, throw some minced meat and garnishes in and you are done. Even a novice cook like myself can easily whip up Beancurd with Minced Meat, but doing it well is an art by itself. Lau Hock Guan Kee's version exceeded expectations. What looked like a pathetic excuse for the dish turned out to have soft and silky tofu (similar to the Agedashi Tofu in Japanese eateries) and a tantalising gravy owing to the hearty mix of minced meat, carrots, spring onions, mushrooms and other garnishes. But then again, it would have been better if the cook had gone a little easier on the salt.

I'm sure everyone has eaten quite a bit of Bak Kut Teh in their lives and I'm no exception. The 2 most popular versions of Bak Kut Teh are the Teochew version, which has a clear and peppery soup and the Hokkien version, which has a dark and herbal soup. Lau Hock Guan Kee's rendition belonged to neither group. It's soup was slightly darkish and had seaweed and vegetables in it. It had no Bak Kut taste but tasted strongly of the seaweed. Rather weird, but still very decent in my opinion. The Bak Kut itself was nice though. The meat was tender and we had no difficulty tearing the meat off the bones. If they can do something about the soup, I'm sure this will be a smashing Bak Kut Teh.

Dinner for 3 pax with drinks cost a mere $30/-. For the huge portions (all of our dishes can feed 4 pax), this is definitely a steal. We had actually wanted to try their fish head and Fish Stomach with Bittergourd, but were too stuffed to even harbour such thoughts at the end of our meal. As such, I'll definitely be back to pick up from where we left off.
