I think Pasta De Waraku is great, but the price is just not worth it. And there are other things...

My boyfriend and I decided to try Pasta De Waraku in Square 2 after attending a mass in Novena Church nearby. It seems perfect; my boyfriend is a fan of Japanese food and I'm a sucker for pasta.

So we decided to go in and got a table for two. Again it's a thing I hate : the table is too small! And worse still, it was crowded by its enormous menu (as in really enormous, you know!), bottles of pepper and chilli flakes and what-nots, and tissue. Sigh..

Oh and we were greeted by music that seemed to come from "Greatest Hits of the Year 2000" CD. (eeks) Yes, for me music in a restaurant is important to build ambience!

Speaking of ambience, it was so noisy. Maybe because it was quite a closed type. And the staff keep shouting and shouting. "Irasshaimase!" (or something like that) "Arigato Gozaimas!" plus the chattering of the people.. Ugh. My eardrum hurts.

As for the food.. Their emphasis is on healthy food. But I believe healthy food should not be tasteless. It was quite tasteless and uninteresting. I gotta add cheese and oil and any other things. And it's priced so highly!

I'm really not sure that I'm going back again. Not for a very long time I guess.

Nihon Mura might not serve the best sushi in town but it's surely the best value!

Priced only 99 cents per plate, it will surely satisfy your sushi craving. Because it's so cheap, you can stuff your stomach up to 10 plates a time! (yes I've done it before.. Hungry mah... =P)
They also serve many other kinds of Japanese food such as udon, tempura, soup, and Japanese satay. However these are quite expensive and for the time being I'm still sticking to the 99 cents per plate sushi. They also serve nice desserts and juices and drinks!

The ordering system is kinda unique. You don't call waiters/waitresses nor come to the counter to order. You'll be given a small... erm what cha call it.. cylinder? Hahaha. You know like the ones you use to put your pens. And then you'll walk to inside and pick the sticks (like ice cream sticks actually) corresponding to the food/drink you want. Then you'll bring the cylinder with the sticks to the counter. You can then continue to choose your sushi on the conveyor belt.

Seems quite cheem at the first place, but fret not! The waiters/waitresses are friendly and will ask you when you just arrived whether it's your first time. If it is, they will explain to you.

This place is, and will still be, the place that I frequent with my friends. Watch out though, it's bound to be a tad crowded on meal hours.

Not as special as I thought

Before J.Co arrives in this little small dot, I'd read bloggers from across the causeway sharing how good it is and how much they love it. So when I head they've set up their very first outlet at Raffles city, I was delighted! Off I went to try the infamous J.Co donuts.

When I was there, the queue wasn't as long as I'd expected. Instead the competition nearby, Donut Factory, was having a longer queue than J.Co.

I joined in the queue and started observing the staff behind the counter. They've in place an ordering system where each staff is incharge of some flavors within the hand-reach. And each customer is given a number for their order. The first staff will ask the quantity you want to buy and get the boxes ready. She's in charge of the first few flavors and will issue you a number when she passes you to the next staff who'll serve you for the rest of the flavors available. When you're done with your selection, you'll then proceed to the cashier where they'll tally your order and collect payment.

This seem like a systematic and effective way for them. But its not so friendly to some of the customers. Especially if they're there for the first time and not sure of what flavors they want. I would recommend to decide on the flavors and quantity for each before you reach the first staff. This will surely speed up the ordering process.

Hmm... looks like I've spent more time typing and explaining the process rather than talking about the donuts! Well, because, after tasting almost all the brands of donuts available in Singapore and also those from Krispy Kreme, I find the J.Co is just another brand of donuts. Nothing much to wow about. Other than some of the interesting looking ones with special names for some, there's just nothing much I would comment on. But because this is the only outlet here in Singapore, for now, I'm sure many will still queue to buy some just to get a taste of this sweet indulgence that is still getting the attention for the mass in Singapore.

As for me, I'll be staying away from these fattening snacks for now. :)

    Lovely place with lovely food

Together with a few Yebbers, we met at mint cafe for an informal gathering. The cafe is cosy and comfy. Located at the basement of mint museum, decorated to the theme of the museum. The cafe is filled with retro looking movie posters and toys. Even the cushion on the seats were printed with robot (if I'd not remembered wrongly). The cafe thou small, house quite a good variety of food.

Some of us ordered their set lunch at $13.80 and some ordered the tea set at $7.80 .

There's a few mains that one can choose for their set lunch. And the set comes with soup, main, dessert and drink. As for the tea sets, one can choose any cakes/desserts in the menu and any of the tea/coffee available.

The soup served was nicely cooked and thick. For my set lunch, I ordered the Crispy Chicken Chop as my main. When it was served, I could smell the aroma coming from the generous piece of chicken. The main was served with mashed potato and side salad. One cut into the chicken and I knew I'm going to love it. Taking my first bite, I could taste the crispy crust and the meat inside was marinated and I love the taste. (Know when I'm writing this, I think this is the same chicken served at the night of Yebber's anniversary! No wonder it tasted familiarly delicious that night. Hot favorite by everyone.)

The dessert served with my lunch set was a tad too sweet for my liking. Couldn't remember what is its name thou.

On my other visit to the cafe, I ordered their tea set with Mississippi pie as the dessert. The chocolate mousse covering the layer of chocolate pie was not too sweet and complements the entire pie pretty well. I would recommend to enjoy the pie together with the whipped cream at the side. It's there for a reason. If you are not a whipped cream person, I recommend you try their other selections. Cos the pie gets a little "sick-to-eat" if eaten on its own.

Will surely be going back for their lunch set if I've the chance to. The spaghetti in their lunch set selection looks nice too.

    Footnote
After the event at mint, I would personally recommend anyone who's looking for a classy place to host your events at Mint museum. The staff are all very helpful and despite my long-winded conversation and constant reminders, the lady planning the event with me is always friendly and helpful. Thanks Mandy for the wonderful coordination and effort! As for the food, I'm sure many whom attended will agree with me that its good. Right?

    1875. Guan Hin
       30 Mar 2008 at 12:24 am
    feizhu feizhu says:

It has been more than a year since my family last visited Guan Hin so a revisit was in order especially after Guan Hin had just undergone a facelift. The new Guan Hin now boasts a more spacious interior through efficient usage of space and whitewashed walls to go along with the spanking new carpet and furniture. The lingering nostalgia is gone as well, covered up by the fresh coat of paint that dons the walls.

Braised Goose - The goose was thinly sliced and tasted great with the not too salty gravy. Some work needs to be done on the beancurd though, coming across as a tad too rough for my liking. Comparisons are inevitable between Guan Hin's rendition and that of Hung Kang, with the latter taking the cake effortlessly with its polished rendition of this traditional Teochew dish.

Sauteed Kailan - Nicely stir fried without being overcooked. However it was a little too oily and watery. What I liked was that it came served with "Ti Po" or crispy fried sole fish, which gave the occasional crunch and added saltiness.

Steamed Pomfret - Fresh and steamed just right, with the flesh firm and sweet. Just the way a good dish of steamed pomfret should be. Paying compliments to the fish was the gravy, tasty from all the sour plums and tomatoes in it.

Liver Roll - The liver roll or "Ngoh Hiang" was honestly quite good. Thin crispy skin covering a mould of finely chopped liver but with only a slight hint of liver taste. Dipped in the sweet and sticky plum sauce, it made for a nice dish.

Yam Paste with Gingko Nuts - As mentioned before, I consider yam paste or Orh Nee as one of the hallmarks of Teochew food, which explains my high expectations of it. While I used to praise Guan Hin for their rather stellar rendition of this traditional Teochew dessert, the same compliments couldn't be extended that evening. Barely warm when served, it looked pre made and as though it had been sitting in a corner for quite a long period of time. Texture wise, it wasn't smooth, coming across as chunky and oily. Even the gingko nuts were too soft and bland. A total disappointment.

A rather filling dinner for 5 came up to about $90, which really isn't very expensive but somehow or rather, food standard has slided a little, especially in the case of the Orh Nee. Service was acceptable but could be better. Has the hype over Guan Hin resulted in a decline in its culinary standard - one that took decades to build?

like the previous reviewer i have tried the coco exotic and loved it from the start. i always have a soft spot for cakes with hazelnut crunch in it and after trying the coco exotic i have stopped buying my usual chocolate obsession(which is also very good if u like cakes that are a mix of chocolate, vanilla cream mousse).

also check out the cream puff, the puff pastry is crispy and light and the cream inside is rich, tasty and not too sweet. at 1.15 it is quite reasonable for something which is quite sizable. and of course the mini pastries. usualli ill get the danish with chocolate filling in the middle, bt i notice some new additions, including a fromage which looks like a fish. its a danish with melted cheese and sugar. yummy to take home and reheat in the oven till crispy.

I m also a big fan of the almond cookies, crunchy, with a good amount of almonds, you dont get that weird taste in your mouth after eating too much(like some cookies with way too much baking soda). the chocolate version is a bit too heavy for my liking though).

try the other pastries like the chocolate crossaint, caterpillar and the donuts are ok too

crepes, nutella crepes, nutellacrepes with white chocolate.
close to being in heaven i think.

sure i kinda scalded my tongue cos it was still hot when i bit into the crispy yet soft crepe and the warm delicious chocolate. it is such a guilty pleasure yet i dont mind spending 3-4 dollars for something so delicious and good. some places really do not serve up good crepes but saybons does.

bf got the apple cinnamon one n i liked it, not too much cinammon was used but could still taste both the apple with a hint of cinammon.but still love my chocolate one.

i find the concept very fresh n intresting.the focaccia bread was good too, not super hard and very flavourful, goes very well with the garlic spread.
have yet to try the soups though.
    theres always the next visit.

staff are young but professional, friendly..accomodating n always have a smile on their face.

I have yet to try J.Co but till today donut factory is my ultimate favourite donut place. I can easily buy a dozen donuts but half a dozen of em are the double chocolate donuts.

The first time i tried it i felt like i was in heaven. The delicious white chocolate coating and the surprise of a chocolate filling.
It was purely sinful indulgence. I found the peanut butter filling a bit too much though. A bit too thick to me. But another flavour i liked was the kaya. Some people do not like the taste of kaya but i liked it. esp with the layer of glaze around it.

The cheese donut tasted like a pizza, I am ok with it but doubt ill buy more of it. The raspberry heart shaped donut is nice but too too sweet. it might be good if they used dark chocolate instead of white. Rarely get the normal hazelnut or chocolate/peanut butter donut but another one i like is the mocha almond. plenty of delicious crunchy almonds and the mocha flavouring isnt too overwhelming. I hope they open an outlet in the east soon. somehow travelling to raffles and suntec seems too far for me.

The meatballs have always intrigued me as everyone keeps raving about it but due to my religion I'm not able to eat it. But its ok, the salmon is my ultimate favourite until today. If i ever go Ikea its always on a friday as that is the day they have the fish and chips too. The salmon may be small in portion but for the price that Im paying, i dont mind. It even tastes good. The sauce is my favourite and i like the broccoli that comes along with it.
The chicken wings are definitely the highlight.

Crispy, hot and tastes oh so sinfully good. Itll b good if they used thighs too. Cant help it i love the thighs more than the wings.

Desserts are good too. Tried the daim cake.yummy. Its like a tart but with daim goodness in it. The princess cake is not bad too. Though my favourite is still the daim cake.

Have yet to try the asian dishes though. Heard the halal nasi padang is passable but a bit on the pricey side for nasi padang.

If you are an ikea friends member(my dear mom is), can get complimentary drink or something. Not too sure but it is worth it to be an ikea friend.

Brazilian waxing first-timers, i have found the best place to make your first experience (with brazilian waxing) as pleasurable as it could get!

Check out Honeypot at Pacific Plaza.

Firstly, for ladies who are conservative, no worries. All their staff are female, so you'll have nothing to worry about.

Second, the ambience in the waxing room is nice and cosy, complete with calming music, so you'll probably feel like having a nice snooze in there.

The wax that they use are specially formulated to ensure that even people with sensitive skin (especially at the delicate area) will not suffer from any after-effects.

The staff are friendly and will chat with your casually to ease your nerves and assist in making the whole experience more pleasant.

Even when its an "all-off" situation, you won't have to get into any awkward positions. Just turn to your side and leave all the rest to your very nice and gentle waxer.

And before you know it, its over! You'll walk away smooth as a baby's bum and thinking to yourself, "hey that wasn't so bad. It was pretty good actually!"

Personally, i'm a real coward when it comes to physical pain and i will cry before, during and after injections. I decided to take a chance and go to Honeypot for my first Brazilian waxing session. Not only did i live through it (which i frankly thought i wouldn't), i felt so much better about myself afterwards having gone through the whole thing!

Try it yourself if you don't believe me!

Oh yes and i only gave it a 4-star 'Good!' rating because when you enter the shop, it seems a bit disorganized and the ladies were nowhere to be seen. I had to call out for someone to come out to attend to me. But everything else after that went smoothly!
