Calamari and Crab Croquettes   Crab Baked Rice 1   Crab Baked Rice 2   Menu
After reading the previous reviews which gave such good ratings, Crab Shack is a place I had to try. Therefore, on saturday (08/03/2008), my girlfriend and me went down to Crab Shack for dinner. To my disappointment, they ran out of flower crabs. We ordered the Calamari, Crab Croquette and Crab Baked Rice.

    Calamari ($4)
8 pcs of calamari that was good because the sotong inside the batter was not very hard to chew. It was soft and you can taste the sotong very well. The batter was alright, but it did complement the sotong.

    Crab Croquette ($3.20)
6 pcs of crab croquette did not turn out to be as nice as expected. Yes, the batter on the outside was crsipy and the filling was creamy. But it clearly lacked the taste of crab which we both agreed upon. Very strong smell of lemon in the filling though.

    Crab Baked Rice ($6.80)
The baked rice came after more than 45 minutes of waiting. We had no idea why it took so long. The baked rice was good though. The cheese was not only on the top layer of the rice, but also amongst the rice. The rice was sweet also. The rice also came with dried shrimps inside which was really nice with it. However, it also lacked the taste of crab.

Overall, not as nice as expected. But i have yet to taste the flower crabs which they are famous for. So probably will return another time to taste it. The whole mean took more than an hour as the waiting time was rather long, not only for the baked rice.

P.S. The 'Teh-peng' was quite bad so try not to order it.

       Prata   Coffeeshop   Shop
Hidden in the corner of a generally unknown area in Sin Ming Road, lies this small prata shop inside a coffeeshop. Been here umpteen times, but today I brought my girlfriend here for breakfast after my night shift. A short walk from the 'more famous' Prata House along Upper Thomson Road, this prata shop doesn't have much buses passing by so you have to probably alight at the Upper Thomson Road and take a short walk in.

We had 'Kosong' prata ($0.70) and Egg Prata ($1.30) at the prata shop. The "kosong' prata was crispy/flaky on the outside. Unlike the ones at Prata House where it is very crispy, too crispy for my liking. This one is crispy to perfection. I love it. Also, this prata is about 1.5 times the size of the ones at Prata House. The Egg prata was good too. THe crispy/flaky texture of the prata was less evident on the Egg Prata though. Taste above average but not fantastic.

We tasted both the chicken curry and fish curry. The fish curry came about a little too sour, and both curries were a little too spicy. If the curry was less spicy would have been perfect. My girlfriend mixed sugar with the curry to reduce the spicyness and it turned to be a good idea.

In addition, I had eaten their nasi brani which they are famous for too. The Mutton Nasi Brani ($4) was perhaps the better one amongst the others. The mutton was very tender and the mutton curry sauce is very tasty. It went very well with the rice which was very fragrant. However, the first few mouthfuls was delightful but midway through, it became quite 'gelat'. There was only 'Achar' beside the mutton which came with the brani. Overall, good mutton and rice.

Very good place to eat prata which they usually stop selling at about 2pm. Sadly, they do not operate 24 hours. Nasi Brani is only sold around lunch time, should be from 11am-330pm. So far, one of the best prata I have eaten.

White Fungus with Red Dates (Cold)   Mango Pomelo Snowy Mountain
    *Review done by my girlfriend*

My bestfriend and I were craving for some midnight sweets so we headed done to Thomson Road to try out the Tong Shui Cafe. There is a choice of dining inside or alfresco style in the end we choose to dine inside.

Receiving the menu we were spoilt for choice. The waiters also served preserved vegetables and wet wipes WHICH WILL BE CHARGED (although they don't inform you about it) so we politely told them we didn't need it. To order you have to write it on the paper given to you and ask the waiter to take it from your table.

    Mango Pomelo Snowy Mountain

This dessert contains a good portion of lime (the sweet kind) flavoured ice shavings topped with mango puree and chunks of real mango and Pomelo. This combination was nice as the pomelo and lime-flavoured ice shavings helped balanced the sweetness of the mango puree. Refreshing and pleasant choice for mango lovers.

White Fungus with Red Dates (Cold)

This dessert has a nice tradtional chinese dessert taste. A bit too sweet for my liking. The ice shavings were VERY LITTLE so if you are going to order it write more ice shavings under the remarks section when ordering. The white fungus was nice and soft with a bit of bite. I think with more ice shavings it will help reduced the sweetness making it just nice.

I can't really remember the price but the cold desserts were around $3.90-$4.90 each without including GST. I will go back again to try the other famous dishes such as their thick toast.

A thing to note, operations hours are from 6pm-6am.

       Mega Burger   Chicken Baked Rice
I've been to Swensens many times but this is my first time reviewing them. I brought my girlfriend to the outlet in Bishan Junction 8 after watching a movie.

    Mega Burger ($13.90)

The burger is much bigger and taller than your average burger. The fillings include a layer of fresh lettuce and tomatoes, tasty grilled vegetables, one juicy succulent generous beef patty, slices of ham, 2-3 strips of very crispy bacon which went well with the BBQ sauce that came with it (nicer than Burger King's Bacon) melted cheese and onion topped with a sunny-side up egg which yoke was just nice (not too runny). The buttered bread was tasty and soft. The fillings tasted great together. However, it was rather difficult to eat it as a whole (messy eating). Its a very satisfying meal, best eaten when your very hungry or when sharing with a companion. Meal came with a small portion of yummy fries and tasty coleslaw.

    Chicken Baked Rice (11.50)

First thing to note, when eaten alongside with the Mega Burger, it tastes more blend in comparison. The slices of chicken were mainly breast meat which was not to my liking. The top layer of melted cheese had cubes of carrot and thats about it. The rice reminded me of chicken rice rice. Very average dish in my opinion.

Total Bill came up to be $29.90 inclusive of service charge for both dishes. Waiting time is alright despite the place being packed. Service was nothing special. 4 STARS for the Mega Burger but overall experience I would give 3 STARS.

       Merlionster   Free mints
It was my 1st time going to Ben & Jerry's at Vivo City. Well, i guess all the ice cream should taste similar as it is a franchise. The shop at Vivo looks pretty comfortable like the rest of the Ben & Jerry's. After dinner at Marche, me and 4 other friends decided to have some dessert over there.

The 5 of us order the Merlionster ($21), which basically consist of 6 scoops of ice cream of your choice, with bananas and warm brownies to go along. You can also choose either caramel syrup or hot fudge on the ice cream and a topping of your choice. The toppings include peanuts, chocolate rice or M&M's. We chose Cookie Dough, StrawberryKiwi Sorbet, Coffee Coffee Buzz Buzz, Chunky Munky, Chocolate therapy and Cherry Garcia. I sould have to say all went pretty well except the Sorbet. The brownies came as abit too hard though it is still warm. Apart from that, the Merlionster was pretty nice and adequate in terms of quantity.

The staff that served me was alittle blur and didn't seem very friendly too. The other staffs seemed to be quite energetic and friendly though. They gave out free mints for purchases over $18 in a single receipt on this occasion. Overall, quite a typical visit to Ben & Jerry's. We enjoyed it nonetheless.
