We were there for the Annual Penang Hawker's Fare and I was not the least bit impressed. The whole event was held at York Hotel's breakfast cafe styled area with a large spacious seating that at this time is crawling with hungry patrons.

Its a buffet yet its not really so. Just like what you may find at the infamous hawkers, you got to queue and watch them prepare your food collect and go back. So you do see alot of walking, not so much of serving and lotsa cooking. The queue I must say is pretty long on all the stalls which comes up to a mere 10 or so. Menu served is a selection of Penang's most popular and favourite dishes such as Char Kway Teow, Fishball noodles, Prawn Noodles, Asam Laksa, Mian Jian Kway, Hey Chor (aka wu xiang), penang rojak and ice kacang.

The food did not taste exceptionally good and the selection was too simple and by my standards a little too few. Though these dishes represents the Penang culture and what we most likely would love to eat when we visit the place yet the way its being made in terms of taste and food portion is not equivalent. Everything is served in small portions and each patron can only get 2 portions per queue. This I find is a very good system to prevent overcrowding and queue hogging.

The few stuffs I find pretty yummy would be:

    1) Asam Laksa - The soup was thick and savoury, aromatic with loads of prawn paste and tangy with controlled spiciness. Its not too spicy and tasted just right for a non-chilli diner like me.

    2) Penang Rojak - Its something like a salad with prawn paste and is difficult to get it wrong. Though my taiwanese friends do mention that prawn paste smells like stinky socks yet how could something taste so yummy when mixed with juicy fruits and crispy you tiao?

    3) Fish Ball kway teow soup - Fish ball is bouncy and chewy, soup savoury and kway teow soft and springly. This is a pretty light dish with clear soup yet its comfort food for many.

Service was sufficient but not extraordinary. Its busy, the place is crowded yet our water are refilled promptly and used plates cleared quickly. Though the food is alright only, selections few, price is not small. I find it not a good choice for buffet, i mean there are better buffets for that same price yet I'm still puzzled.. the place is crowded to its brim and i do mean a queue forming while the seating area is already pretty huge and overly utilized.

    Food: 3.5/5
    Selection:2.5/5
    Service: 3.5/5
    Location: 2.5/5
    Price: 2/5

Will I return: Not for the buffet, perhaps for other stuffs

Will i bring my friends: Will not recommend but will let them know that a Penang Fare exists.

A nice cosy joint tucked right opposite the UOB Branch inside International Plaza. Its a small joint that serves italian cuisine big in taste as well as portion. An excellent choice of pastas, pizzas as well as risottos and yummilicious desserts.

We were passing by and got drawn in by the rich aromatic flavors in the air, spices, burnt crusty pizza and loads of wicked garlic that tickled our senses and cause excess salivation. So we managed to find some seats at what looked like make shift dining tables, simple, no frill just a table and some stools and there was no menu except the one that were being scribbled onto the black board in chalk; "i love the environmental friendly act, except I can't really read all the selections at once". Seating was pretty tight I must say, elbow to elbow and back to back for some, i mean the guys would simply love it except it was pretty warm and well, some were breaking into sweat (i wonder hot or cold).

There were not many choices yet the selection was great, simple heart warming selection of traditional Italian Home Cooked affair and what delighted us more was the happy hour for the beers. So we ordered some stuffs to share at the counter, made payment and collected a cute cone table number. The wait was about 5 mins before drinks were served and well the appetizer. Service was prompt...

1)INSALATA ALLA CESARE - Classic caesar salad fit for Caesar himself, the portion was good to share, but Caesar decided to eat it all by himself, so this I didn't get a bite. The toss of romaine lettuce was fresh and crunchy (as i spy hungrily and noticed the crunchy snaps happening in somebody else's mouth, and yes i do have a keen hearing). Drizzled with a good amount of caesar sauce (which is not figure flattering), popped in loads of croutons that by now are limp from soaking up too much liquid and a generous flicker of parmesan cheese.

      2) DIAVOLA - Pizza topped with pork salami. Its 10 inches... yes a good whole 10 inches in a thin slightly burnt hand rolled crust. Simple and traditional it felt like and tasted homely. Generous topping of cheese and thin round slices of salami looking like crop circles in a field of corn. It tasted regular while i was really looking for a wow factor in which i can't find except that sweat mixed with pizza is particularly salty. I would wish they would use a cheese with more Edge and character that clashingly brings out the salt and muskiness of the Salami. It was regularly nice and yummy for a Comfort Food.

3)LINGUINI AL NERO DI SEPPIA - Pasta tossed in Black Squid Ink Sauce. We wanted to try something more exotic and hope that it could bring out the WOW-Factor in this cafe and we spotted this. Well it is as illustrated, normal pasta tossed in the supposedly flavourful squid ink was not as black as it should be. Tasted pretty regularly nice with generous rings of squids and olive oil. Pasta was cooked a little too soft and not as flavourful as it should be.

The food was priced decently with good portions and don't really expect much service in a bistro. Nice place, could do with more space yet the unintentional squeeziness made it feel nice. Central aircon couldn't help much so bring along a hanky just in case it gets too drippy. Its good to eat and go home as the clothes do gets lingering cooking and especially garlic smell. We went to meet somebody else after dinner and smelled really wicked at the next location. More perfume doesn't work, it just made it worse....

Nice joint, will come again :)

I hang here waiting for the ladies to finish their shopping, had a nice slice of red velvet and some hot chocolate to calm my nerves from all the ferocious robinson's sale customers. Coffee Bean is always good, the aromatic beans though i'm a little caffeine intolerant smelt heavenly from where I seat overlooking the chaotic mess of "EVERYTHING I ALSO WANNA BUY"

What they say is true, never get in the way of a sale grabber, else you be trampled and dragged along wherever she goes like a toilet paper trail from the edge of her heels as she strode out of the ladies. I used to love the chicago cheese cake, always find it cheesy and crumbly at the base yet this cake has become too starchy through the years.. Perhaps its the type of cheese used or the flour and cheese proportion, it just seemed not so yummy anymore. But you must try the red velvet cake, its the next yummiest cake Coffee Bean carries. Its crust is a sweet candied covering with moist dark purple red spongy body with a soft layer of thin cream. The cake tasted heavenly especially with tea. Its light on calories yet full in taste. Love the colour, love the taste. Price its pretty affordable and service is always smiling and quick. Location is fantastic as we need to hide from the crowd yet be able to keep an eye on the ladies when a porter is needed now and then to watch the loots...

        Service: 4/5
        Price: 3.5/5
        Food: 3.8/5
Handicap friendly: 2/5 - not quite so because of some steps

Will I return? As faithful as the sales get held

Will I bring my friends? Yup.. we should so create a networking group there!

I was drawn in by the loud colours and cute looking 3D images of animals and things... *i'm confused by what I see* is there really such a big generation gap? Stationary don't look quite like this in my days. Colours and loud and attention grabbing with I designs awkward, not something I would use comfortably for sure yet I have the urge to buy not one but all the colours home, just to make my study desk look beautiful.

Yes, Smiggle is a stationary store, new age and quirkyly modern of cause with colour so bright and cheery, it perked up serious paper work days. You can find almost everything in the most absurd colours here, from basic stuffs like pencils/ pens to quirky pencil cases, carry around mini speakers and cases for everything else that needed to be cased.

Love the way the things are organized according to their colours and the prices are reasonable. Items are of good make and quality and I realised very safe, no sharp edges of non-ergonomic design that could leave you with a cramp. Love the spaces available for browsing and little stuffs are breakable as such less accidents for clumsy kids. The centre display is mounted low with items placed easily reachable by really tiny kids. Perfect place to choose that children's day gift and perks up my single coloured desk.. *its just white and black everything*.

          Location: 4/5
          Child Friendliness: 4/5
          Ambience: 4/5 (Excitingly fun)
Merchandise: 4/5 (Good range of environment and user friendly stationeries and more)
Price: 4/5 (Affordable though higher then normal stationary, with its make, colour and quality, its definitely worth the price)

          Will I come back: YAR

WIll I intro my friends: YAR.... especially the tiny ones with loads of kids :)

Way down the escalator to the usually quiet basement of orchard central, some might already forgotten this mall actually existed as its good days are much glamoured over by the neighbouring spanking new malls that offer much more pleasant distraction.

The entrance is pretty much by the escalator and it kinda reminded me of Marche except that there is no cows with awkward patches, rather beautiful Mediterranean multicoloured mosiac handiworks such as lamps and table top trinkets. We were given a card each and lead to the large dining areas with food counters everywhere.

The concept is great, grab the seat of your choice, for some a quiet corner and for some a loud table for noisy gatherings, well we chose one near the exit where it is cushioned and boothed so that while we share quiet secrets or crack mindless jokes, nobody can catch us.

We did a brief walk and discovered many interesting dishes we could try. Salad was a hip it yourself thing and charged according to bowl size (normal or large), soup comes with a choice of a bread and the ever comfort food rosti is also available, panfried on the spot. The interesting food besides the regular meat roast and stirred fried would be the greek and the turkey cuisines. Ranging from pizza, curry puff lookalike calzones and sandwiches to turk specialities like grilled lamb, chicken, beef with a pita bread and fancy sauces. We enjoyed the choices of food and not to forget the very exquisite choice of beers available. More than 100 type of imported bottled beer for you to choose from and during happy hour, you get a 1 for 1 deal which is pretty affordable.

We ordered some dishes and we enjoyed them pretty much:
            1) Rosti with sausage - Its regular comfort dish, rosti crispy and not too oily.

            2) Seafood Pesto Spaghetti - Is mildly tasting with loads of pesto and 3 beautiful prawn fairly large grilled to perfection.

            3) Chicken Pesto Calzone -Nicely baked, skin is puffy and light while the chicken pesto filling generous and quite yummy i must say.

            4) Tapas - One of our favourite had got calamari, prawns and roast pork which goes superbly well with beer. The tapas is extremely delicious and the portion is good to share. Not huge but with a good mix of variety

            5) Grilled lamb with pita - Meat is juicy and flavorful, very well done however we had to wait a good 10 mins before it is ready. Very well executed and the pita bread is fluffy but not floury.

Overall experience was good, staff was friendly though on a mid week evening, the restaurant is only about 30% full and the service staff few. They were extremely friendly always with a smile on their faces and quick to clear our dishes. Helpful but not bossy.

            Location: 3/5,
            Food Variety: 4/5,
            Yumminess: 4/5,
            Price Worthy: 4/5,
            Ambiance: 4/5

Will I return : Of course yes

Will I bring my friends: FOR SURE!
