You can't miss this outlet, It seemed to be there forever. This Jack's Place outlet has been there since my childhood days and it kinda became a good meeting spot for me and my friends.
Its usually a quieter place to dine in town, you could almost always find a space and I simply enjoy the cosiness of the booth like sittings. Yup, its old skool, you get the splinted worn out wooden seats and ugly plastic laminated menu, but its alright because everything goes well together and thats including the elderly looking waiter and waitresses (I admire their courage to take up a job as waiting on others is not a simple feat who suffers from back aches and knee pains *SALUTE*). The boring green checked table clothes and antique looking hanging lights, it really brings back very fond young memories and the sweet smiles from the staff, I feel completely at home.
The lunch sets are a good steal. The best I must say would be the Sirloin Steak lunch set for $13.90 that comes complete with the soup of the day, garlic bread, dessert of the day and coffee/tea. I simply love the soup of the day, coffee of the day because it kinda made my day :) Well, you can have the option to upsize and add on with a smaller additional fee, like the every so yummy, snapshot of the ocean without a mouthful of sand, the LOBSTER BRISKET soup has always been a signature of Jack's Place and we also love the seafood salad.
Water was served with a smile and a quick placement of cutleries and shortly the soup and garlic bread arrived. Its a creamy tomato based soup and tasted pretty balanced and homely while shortly afterwards, our steaks arrived. Medium for me and meat is tender with some juiciness still retained inside. The portion was good for an asian diner and I simply loved the sides which is a blanched vegetables that still retained is fresh green appearance and some fried potato chips (french fries). I am not quite a beef lover but i finished it all. It was yummy portion was just right, thickness of the slab just good, easy to cut through, fresh and yummy, (the ancient way).
Dessert was served of a generous portion. An apple crumbly looking slice of pie (full portion) drizzled with a slightly foggy transparent sauce that tasted sweet. While I had my tea "o" (without milk), i drizzled my pot of evaporate milk (aka creamer) onto the pie to add on to the mushiness and creamy texture. Heavenly.
Love the environment, the service, the homely feel and I hope Jack's Place will be around for the longest time possible.

If you fancy international cuisine by which I mean specialities from different countries round the world in the setting of our famous food court, this is the place to go. I was pretty amazed by what I saw at this legendary food court at our iconic Marina bay sand shoppes. Situated right next to the ice skating ring, another interesting spot, many would watch their children skate while they enjoy some tantalizing cuisine.
Out of the myriad stalls serving asian food and chinese food which is quite a normal scene in regular food courts, I spotted a Northern Indian store that sells kababs, naan and Nasi Briyani. While the later is common, Naan is a pretty hard to find and expensive piece of bread not to be found commonly here in Singapore. While i enquired on the Naan, I was told that it would not be sold until after 5 and was asked to go for the every yummy briyani. As i wanted something light, i walked on and came to this mexican stall that had wraps, pitas and cheesy nachos. The food looked so authentically made, the displays were what i used to see in the streets of mexico though without the large round hats. The generous guacamole and salsa dressed nachos caught my attention and I've decided to order one of those.
While after payment was made, the friendly staff hipped on a pile of crispy nachos on a porcelain oval shallow bowl and started to dress the nachos with the various colourful condiments, salsa and lastly a generous blanket of cheese while it was put under this top toasting machine. You could practically see the nacho crisp and the cheese melt to coat it into a delicious mess.. Lastly a good dollop of guacamole and we are good to go. The nachos were tasty, though its a very rich dish, we enjoyed it tremendously.
While I browse the other stalls, there were also italian food specializing in pizzas, pastas and everything else italian, as well as Mediterranean cuisines with their every so good seafood. I checked out their prices and some of the dishes other patrons ordered and though it is higher than normal food courts but the portion, setting and the ingredients used were of good quality. Its really like restaurant prices at the food court level, though I once again stress that it is more expensive than regular food courts that serve minced meat noodles, mixed veg rice, fish soups and everything local but nothing here is the regular.
Sitting space were ample for big groups yet I can't find no quiet spots and its not so quiet which is good if you are hanging with a bunch of rowdy friends. Service was good with a smile mostly and the cleaners were 'SUPER ON!', extremely quick in clearing stuffs on the table, not just the empty coffee cup of my pal but also my half drank soya milk and half finished nachos. No asking if you need it rather take and go. I was about to ask her to return me my stuffs yet upon seeing her dirty rag, i changed my mind! Rather lose the food than having to make new acquaintances with the toilet seat.

I was surprised to find Borders back in Singapore after the closure of the wheelock outlet some years ago. I remembered the late night book shopping on eve of weekends and the crazy calender sales every year end but this outlet seems like a long throw from the Borders I know.
The size of the outlet is way too small as compared to the previous Borders and selection of books are not as wide. I recall a very exclusive and interesting stationary department with pretty notebooks and special limited handicraft designed stationeries available but what I spot here are tads of stuffs from popular bookstore. The lighting of the store is good though some areas are rather gloomy, no lounging areas... do you recall the old borders? where one can lounge and browse the books you are about to buy, yet here there's no space for seats, no view and not to mention no crowd.
How you arrange your books takes some effort to make buying and browsing conducive, that's why the shelves at the old borders are almost always kept low when most people could reach the highest shelving and could feel spacious by seeing the occasional view of the other side, yet it is not so here. I think the shelves are way too high and spaced too closely. It feels like you are trying to put too many things in the shop and it kinda lost the original spirit the brand Borders carry.
Service was a so so. I was trying to find this book, though its a little unheard of on our side of the globe yet after waiting about 5 mins at the tiny and isolated counter, nobody came. Perhaps its the late timing or the weekday syndrome. The general walking space of the shop is good and varieties of books better than a neighbourhood book store, however BORDERS is a big name and the image and culture it carries is simply difficult to match up to i suppose. Well, i look forward to further improvements as I was quite dismayed after visiting this outlet.

Soup spoon has always been a big hit with the office ladies as its supposedly low in calories and a fulfilling lunch with loads of nutrition all in one bowl. Along with my other female colleagues, we decided to take our chances at this outlet which is always crowded with long queues. Being crowded and having long queues is 2 different things here. There were days when there is quite a few seats vacant however the queue for purchase is really long, so while we were there, because we are pretty late for lunch, we got seats and the queue was okay passable.
The service is quick. Tell them what soup you want and the size and if you would like to make it a set. Soup is served with a toasted bun and if its a set, you could order your other half either half sandwich or something else and a drink which i chose ice lemon tea. Make payment, collect your location number and you are ready to seat down. Oh yar. cutlery and pepper is to be collected by yourself near to the counter.
I ordered a french onion soup because i know its hard to come by a good one. The onion soup is thick and sweet, browned with a good dose of sauteed onions caramelized to form that lovely mushy taste. Ordered a roast beef half sandwich which ain't too shabby. Though it says half, but with the bowl of soup is a complete meal that could last me my hard days work in the afternoon.
Service i should say is fast and choice of soups on the menu is good. Love the prepacked takeaway soup bags that looked so wholesome. Price is reasonable and the soups are really well made. I tried my colleagues minestrone which is tangy and full of ingredients as well as the tokyo chicken which is a clear soup that is flavourful and colourful.
Though the Ice-Cream at swensens have always been addictive to me and the legendary earthquake a big hit for birthday celebrations, I was here on a sunday afternoon not for anything sweet but because I hear that they are bringing back the free-flow salad bar and boy was the spread good.
At level 3, next to the corridor towards the toilet, it can get a little crowded at the entrance but the restaurant has got ample space and seating arrangement is good for a solo quick lunch or noisy softball team. We were shown to our table shortly after indicating our desire to dine in at the entrance counter and while we weave through the other diner's tables, we noticed the main courses that were ordered were full sized and of a pretty good portion. A little more than what a lady can eat, as such we tried to order smaller mains as we would love to try everything on the free flow salad counter.
An all American beef burger (S$17.90) and a minced beef cottage pie (S$19.90) was the mains we ordered and with every main ordered we get to enjoy the free flow salad bar.
The all american beef burger is made up of the regular cheese, sauteed onions, pickles and beef patty with 2 slabs of burger covers and chunky chips by the side. The patty is juicy and pretty thick however a little over cooked. The minced beef cottage is a delicious moist beef covered by a layer of mash on the top baked till golden brown. Creamy and savoury, a good mixture of the crusted top with moist and tangy minced beef. Made pretty well but we expected a little more herbs and spices that will bring out the WOW factor in this dish.
The buffet bar is a very pretty and clean looking counter that serves up a good array of greens and crispy vegetables. I spotted some really nice stuffs like olives, strawberries, melons, pineapples and various sauces ranging from asian light soy based dressing to thick and creamy cheese sauce. Love the different noodle and pasta salads available, premixed and the fruit salad is also a tasty option if you want something easy to go down after a heavy meal. Crispy deep fried stuffs are also available. Wanton skin fried till golden brown and potato chips add some crisp to you salad and crunchy lightweight round cheese biscuits are also available. The buffet counter is a good mix of everything and I could almost just went for salad alone as a meal. Good spread and thanks for bringing back the salad buffet with such a good variety to choose from.
