In celebration of an OLD SCHOOL MATE's Birthday, we ended up dining at the Buffet Town at Raffles City Shopping Mall. We were pretty shocked by the huge queue barricade set up just outside the entrance where the neon sign resides and on a friday night, i guess it could be pretty crowded. You are to pay before entry and be showed a table.
Counters and counters of food cooked in various way entices our every fantasy and delight. Its a japanese themed buffet this month and after we are being showed our seats, each of us went to the counter that is most appealing to us.
Sashimi counter is one of my favourite, located near the entrance you get freshly cut salmon, meguro, octopus, etc sashimi as well as tempura reversed maki. In the same counter the other side is the salad bar whereby you could crush up some greens for that extra dose of fiber.
The seafood counter is right opposite the sashimi counter on the other side of the entrance and I must say, the raw oysters are huge and meaty. Its fresh and tasted like the ocean, just that I couldn't find no lemon slices as I hunted high and low for it. All you get is ready made sauces at the side. Its kinda of a turn off for nice fresh and huge oysters like these. Of course at the seafood counter you also do get boiled prawns, crayfish, etc.
The cooked food counter is where you get carved wagyu beef, which tasted only so so. Dry and not to melt in your mouth and at this same counter, you do get pasta of different flavors and condiments as well as baked potato gratin, lasagna and other carb rich stuffs.
I was surprised they do have chilli crab and deep fried baby buns, though the sauce is quite yummy and baby buns crunchy, the crab is a mistake. Small and not meaty, when crushed is a clear liquid flowing out. Looked obviously boiled and then thrown into the crab sauce pot.
There is a chicken rice counter that served hainanese chicken rice, laksa and double boiled soup with white fungus. I'm not quite keen in eating more carbs as I do not have a large food intake storage tank, i ended with the white fungus chicken soup which was really yummy. Light and sweet with the crunchiness of the white fungus. Beside it was the tempura counter where you get heavily battered prawns, mushroom, sweet potato, long beans and the extremely yummy Koropok (fritters). The tempura is limp and tempura sauce too diluted... This is not really yummy.
The tappanyaki counter has 2 cooks frying the veg and meat you picked. The variety available is not much (chicken, squid and veg) yet the frying take up quite a long wait. Next to it a satay counter where you get chicken, beef and mutton with some interesting condiments. Its quite a big hit as I didn't get to eat much of that at all.
The drinks counter has got more than 10 types choices, from green tea to gassy drinks and home made soya bean which was pretty smooth and yummy. You too get some soya bean curd which was shockingly smooth and yummy ( I love this the best). I guess made in house and is soft, smooth and bouncy.
Dessert counter is a big heat, besides crepe and waffles with ice-cream (thats if you still have tummy space for that), fruits are plentiful with choice of cakes, pastries and jelly. We loved the creamed puff tree the most. You get to pluck the puffs out of the tree and choose the ones dressed in colourful star or chocolate rice. Ice cream is served with a few flavors (the regular) and you also get some warm desserts like longan soup or local green bean soup.
Service was okay, dishes were removed pretty promptly and cutleries as well as serviettes easily available and plentiful. Air-conditioning comfortable and noise level accepted, however the payment counter and entrance staffs are not pleasant rather i think they looked pretty irritated. Being in the front line, we expect more smiles and warm gestures yet we got none. The tables and chairs were nominally boring and for the price of about $50 per head for a dinner on a friday night, I don't find it worth it though the variety is good and ingredients fresh, the way they prepare and cook it is not yummy, visually appealing and worth the value.
Came across this interesting place while I was riding Singapore's shortest escalator from the Circle Line up to the Citylink walkway towards the MRT. Though many do not walk this supposedly older router any more, I somewhat still love this Popcorny walkway. Why Popcorny? The next time you stroll on the walkway, awake your nose and smell the air :)
The outlet is the first corner shop you see up the Singapore's shortest escalator and I simply love the interior deco. It resembled a cottage with a garden with lots of greenery (though fake plants were used) and sweet pretty flowers all around in a white wooden fenced space. There are wall plants and comfy cushion seats as well as white wood tables and chairs for the complete country feel.
The drink and food selection is somewhat a little different from the regular coffee joints that serves local coffees and I love it. Though we just had dinner and would just like some dessert, we still couldn't resist the thought of the savoury curry chicken and soya sauce chicken with rice, perhaps a bowl of the ever yummy bubur cha cha and yet we ended up ordering coffee and toast because who can resist watery half boiled eggs and crispy soft bun toast?
So we each had a set of the all time favourite toast and runny eggs. The eggs were a little overcooked yet the semi hardened egg yolk just brought more creamy texture to taste. The toast and kaya is super good, creamy yet not too sweet. Coffee was thick and aromatic and for non-caffeine drinkers like me, I have a iced honey which is a generous dose of honey with icy water. We had a great time chit chatting, there were plenty of seats and the outlet has not much crowd on a weekend evening. Service was homely, friendly and pretty quick.
Location: 5/5
Food: 4/5
Price: 4/5 (Some things are cheaper then many other cafes)
Variety: 3.5/5 (Selection is more than similar cafes and they have a great balance between snacks and tummy fillers as well as a good variety of drinks to choose from)
Service: 3.5/5 (Homely and Friendly)
Will I return: Yes, loved the iced honey :)
Will I bring my friends: Yes and introduce more friends
This is one place I would not even expect a seafood eating house and there it is, like gold dust among the dark hard stones. 818 Seafood house serves up one of the best stir fried chinese cuisines. Like I've heard on some good days, you might even get a good dose of wild boar meat (Wild Pig's meat).
Parking is extensive and the place is rather run down but this got me excited as I know I might have straddled upon a gem in the cosmopolitan city such as ours. The smell of yummy food filled the air, savoury, fragrant, spicy and warm on a cool cool rainy evening. We quickly got settled into a large table as there are a big group of 11, ordered our beers and buried our heads in the oily and old laminated menu. The menu serves up pretty much the regular and have some really special flavours so we each ordered a dish we liked and the food is as expected... super yummy!
1) Cereal Squid (L) - $15 - is crispy and filled with oats however, the squid tasted tough and airy.
2) Spanish stir fried with Garlic (L) - $12 - Veg is a rich green, not too oily, of the right cooked state and crunchy.
3) Venison with onion and ginger (L) - $22 - Lots of Venison and the meat is tender, savoury and extremely delicious.
4) Prawn Omelette (L) - $12 - This is one large serving, egg is fluffy with lots of prawn and other condiments. always wondered how the omelette could be so light and fluffy!
5) Salt and Pepper Prawn (L) - $30 - Prawns were medium sized and very tastily prepared. Flavoured is well enhanced and ingredients used are fresh. Even the kids enjoyed it thus its not too spicy.
6) Sambal Mussles (L) - $15 - I'm not quite a fan of these shellfishes yet this one is not sandy like the rest. Tasty chewy and the sauce was fabulous
7) Garoupa (1.2Kg) - $57.60 - Is a medium sized but extremely fleshy fish steamed in soya sauce (aka Hk Style). Its fresh, meaty and cooked right. The flesh is a bright tender white, simply perfectly made.
8) Crab in salted egg (1.4Kg) which made 2 crabs - $56 - is the best dish, super yummy, crab fresh and fleshy with orangy eggs. The sauce is sooo good, we almost slurp it all up.
9) Bean curds (S) - $10 we had 2 servings of this. The bean curd is particularly soft and bouncy as we were told was made by themselves. It is extremely yummy lightly fried for a crispy skin and drizzled on with a savoury meat sauce. This is a must have dish because I've never tasted a beancurd so soft yet with a fried skin before... Its extremely delicious, well made and must be by a very experienced chef.
The overall food experience was very good though the location was kampong, but like I say its like a GEM!
Location: 1/5 - super hard to find
Cleanliness: 2/5 - Its meant to be this way to keep prices low
Price: 4.5/5 - extremely worth it
food: 4.5/5 - really yummy except for the squid
service: 4/5 - friendly, warm and quick... what more could you ask for.
Will i return - FOR WILD BOAR MEAT! YES!!!
Will I bring my friends - Not just friends, but relatives, loved ones, neighbour, colleague, even just met strangers!

Its nice to be having a waffle with ice-cream here during the cool december as it is not airconditioned however with shade and natural air seemed to be a much healthier choice as compared to the cool dry artificial atmosphere.
There are plenty of seats, though not super comfy, yet spacious enough to move around and for big groups, plenty of space and noise control. Service is warm and friendly though we waited quite a while for our waffles... We could understand why because they were freshly made and with the ongoing promotion of 1 for 1 waffles, it is super worth it to grab a waffle here.
They have a good choice of premium ice cream to choose from like white chocolate raspberry, jamaican chocolate and other yummy flavors however they don't serve my favourite rum and raisin :(. The Ice cream is smooth and creamy and heavy in a good way. We ordered a plain waffle with one scoop of ice cream, plus 4 whip cream flowers drizzled with a plentiful of caramel!
The waffle is hot and crispy, thick and loose, very well made and I must say is a good mixture of crisp and softness. Ice cream on the waffle mushy and yummy while the caramel sauce and whip cream brings the buttery sweet to balance. We had a very good time chit chatting over the waffle and in house ice water and the staff is generous to offer more maple syrup, chocolate or caramel sauce when requested. Great place great food and worth it prices.
I was surprised how lean the menu was yet everything on the menu was delectable. NamNam noodle bar is not just famous for its Pho (Vietnamese Noodles), but also the Banh Mi (French Loaf). My favourite, the Banh Mi ($5.90)of course. With a better understanding of the history of Vietnam which was colonised before my the French, they inherited and perfected the skills of the French Loafs and served them local Viet style with vinaigrette sauces and tangy crispy veg.
There are 5 flavors to choose from including a vegetarian option yet my favourite is the 5 spiced pork belly. The bread is soo crispy and best eaten with the white vinegar watery chilli sauce. There are many sauces to choose from so please do taste them all before you decide which one goes best. We also had the famous beef pho in steak slices ($8.90) as this way, we could taste the true flavor of the soup and the freshness of the beef. The pho came smoking hot while the steak slices medium rear, while we allow the pinkish glow of the steak slowly deepen into a light gray (Medium well), we gobbled up the steak with some nice white vinegar chilli sauce (my fav). The noodle was chewy and cooked with the right heat while meat sweet and soup similar to the street hawker's I had while i was in Hanoi.
If you would like some sides, I would recommend the seasonal sweet potato and cheese roll ($2.90), its crispy while inside is soft and naturally sweet from the sweet potato. I can't taste much of the cheese though but it works well as a dessert. Grab a sizzling lemon soda ($3.00) infused with lime and lemongrass is the perfect way to refresh your breath though the meal was heavily spiced, the spice do not linger under your breath.
The setting was casually nice with hooks underneath the table for you to hang your bags and purchases. Seating is rather tight, though we were there early for dinner, we were not shown a generous seat rather a table next to the extinguisher and entrance to the kitchen which is not comfortable at all. Table was also a tad sticky and the bottle that holds the sauce was leaking. Cutleries were self-served at the cashier, however when my date dropped one of her chopsticks, though the staff kindly picked it up and dropped it into the kitchen bin, he did not replace the chopstick for her. Food is yummy and price reasonable but its more like a eat and go place, so don't expect the luxury of spacious sitting or welcoming service. Eat and get out is more like the culture here.
