With a traditonal mindset of vegetarian food being all boring and not that tasty, a trip to this beautiful restaurant totally changed my perception.
This vegetarian restaurant is located strategically beside the newly soft-launch buddhist temple - Buddha Tooth Relic Temple & Museum. Hence, it's not difficult to locate this restaurant.
Stepping into its second storey, you'll be kind of surprised to find it's interior beautifully decorated with mirrored walls and classy furniture. A restaurant totally different from my typical mindset of vegetarian restaurants. "This one is really classy", I thought.
However, looking at it's menu, you'll see familiar food items like hor fun, fried kang kong etc. I had their 'fish' hor fun and frankly speaking, it was GOOD. Though the 'fish' was mock meat and made up beadcurd stuff, it was delicious. Especially with the unique chilli sauce that they have there? *mm~* Delicious! :)
The other dishes ordered were also fabulous. OOH especially the mock fried sotongs they have there. Wow, it was exactly like the 'real' sotongs we usually eat. All tangy and chewy, yet also crispy and tasty as it was fried. I was seriously impressed at how the chef actually managed to create 'such a miracle'. Haha..
The staff was quite friendly, and are willing to give you opinions as to what to order. And..price wise, it was a little pricey, but..I think the food was quite worthy of the price paid.
Vegetarian food doesn't have to be all fried & oily mock meat and vegetables only, u know. Try this place out and your perception on vegetarian food may just change.. :)
With rows and stacks of candy all around the store, Candy Empire truly lives up to its name.
With so many types of candy, chocolates etc available, one would definitely be loss for choice. I had their big Willy Wonka's Caramel Chocolate bar for $6.40 once, and it was deifinitely worth every cent for it, as the chocolate was really thick and chocolatey (duh~).
However, I felt that some candies were a little pricey for me, even though I'm aware that they were imported from overseas. Hmm. Some of them just made me feel that, it just didn't make much sense to pay that much for candies.
Neverthelss, stepping into Candy Empire would truly make anyone with a sweet tooth swoon with happiness! :)
Walking past Shan Katong Laksa during lunch time, you'll bound to be attracted by the number of people eating there.
Being human, won't you wonder why people are crowding in that little shop for their lunch when Holland V is filled with other delicious food?
Shan Katong Laksa sells both Nasi Lemak and Katong laksa, 2 of the more popular food found in Singapore. The shop is non-airconditioned, but crowds of people are still flocking there during lunch time. Why?
My friends and I decided to join the crowd on 2 occasions, to find out what is exactly the attractive factor in this little shop hidden in Holland V. I managed to try both the laksa and the nasi lemak respectively and..to my disappointment, the quality of the food wasn't as good as I expected it to be.
For the nasi lemak, well..the rice was indeed quite fragrant and there were many selections of dishes to pick from. However, due to the hectic business around there, the aunties serving the food wasn't very friendly, and the portions given wasn't very reasonable.
However, the chicken wings were well fried and tasty. Some people even went there to just buy the chicken wings as small snacks, back to their offices! Oh, the staff also took the initiative to cut up the chicken wings etc, so that it's more convienient to eat with your fork and spoons.
As for their laksa, though it's eaten with a spoon like the authentic katong laksa, it didn't taste that fantastic..
Overall I think that the food is just mediocre, and..there's really no necessity to squeeze in with the people for the food I guess~
The Mind Cafe - A one stop fun place for gatherings and spending quality time with your friends!
Stepping into The Mind Cafe, you'll find that though the place feels small, it has a homey feeling making you feel comfortable and relaxed. There are sofa seats on the left side, often reserved for big groups of customers at night, while 2 rows of tables and chairs are on the right side.
The 'crazy' thing about The Mind Cafe is it's range of games available, as well as the staff's knowledge on ALL the games there.
The staff there are all very friendly on my visits there, and would offer to recommend you the stacks of games, depending on your mood or preference. We could even tell them things like, "erm..a game where we wouldn't need to use too much brain cells" and tadah! They'll introduce something that is fun and yet..well..brainless (?) Lol.
Many games were uncommon games that I've never seen before, totally unlike Monopoly or Scrabbles. And the truth is, you can actually get crazy with your friends just by playing board games there. Haha..sounds nuts isn't it? Well..board games definitely brought a different meaning to me after that. ;)
Most importantly, it allowed me and my friends to have a great~ time there. :) Be it close friends or friends that you haven't seen in a long time, The Mind Cafe would definitely bring you guys closer after the games and food there. :)
Oh, mentioning about the food. In my impression, the food served there is actually quite reasonably priced and the quality of the food is not bad. But one thing that I'll ALWAYS get when I go there, is the brownie with ice-cream! *mm~* Their brownie is always so good..chocolatey and warm~ Topped with the cold vanila ice-cream? Yumyum. :P
Actually, The Mind Cafe doesn't have to be a place where you can hang out at, only with a group of people. Even if it's just 2-4 friends, you can drop by The Mind Cafe for games and fun as well. :)
Just do note that this branch at Princep (at Dhoby Ghaut, opposite Paradiz Centre) has quite limited space, especially during the night. So..it's either that you call to reserve a place, or that you can choose to drop by in the afternoon where it's less crowded and more suitable for a quiet afternoon spent with your friend(s). :)
My colleagues and I were planning a BBQ at our supervisor's house, and hence decided to order foodstuff online from BBQ Wholesale in order to save the hassle of preparing the foodstuffs ourselves.
I went to their website and was quite impressed by the range of items that they offered. After submitting the order form, I received an sms confirming the receival of my orders, and that their operators would call me back as soon as possible. And within the day itself, I got the call.
Very efficient, I must say.
However, the impression dropped. I was quite disappointed by the attitude/service provided by the operator, after the calls and further communications with them.
The operator was not at all professional and spoke quite rudely against a somewhat noisy environment. I could sense her lack of concentration, when I picked up the phone and yet she was still on the other end talking to her colleagues in the background. Why call when you are not prepared to speak to your customer seriously?
The rest of the call went on quite well as she confirmed my order with me. However again, I felt that she wasn't concentrating wholely on the conversation when I had to repeat myself a few times to make sure she got the right items and quantity.
One good thing about the service, is that it allows you to call and still make changes 2 or 3 days before the day of delivery. Furthermore, it is quite convenient as you can order online, transfer the payment through bank transfer, and just give them a call after that to notify them.
The foodstuffs were delivered in an ice box which helps to keep the foodstuffs fresh for a longer period of time. However, you may ask for a refund and return the ice box ($3.50, if i'm not wrong) upon delivery as well.
However, it was also not very convenient in the sense that, you are not allowed to choose the timing of your delivery. They have 3 certain slots for delivery - 10am - 12pm, 2pm - 4pm and 4pm -6pm, and postal codes are also in consideration when it comes to the cost and timing that they'll deliver the items.
This can be really troublesome as you wouldn't be sure of the definite time that they'll delivery the stuff. So..unless the place of the BBQ is at your house, or that you'll be there at the BBQ venue earlier, then it wouldn't be a problem.
For me, I had to purposely make sure that I was at my supervisor's house early, so that I can sign and collect the foodstuffs delivered. The time sitting there, waiting aimlessly for the delivery wasn't such a good idea as well. Especially when I could only opt for the timing 4-6pm, when our BBQ would only start at 8pm. >__
Island Creamery, a place where I've read alot on it as well. After reading all the ravings about their unique ice creams and other stuff, I was really curious about this place.
Was it as good as these people mentioned it to be?
With my bf bringing me there as a surprise treat, I finally got to step in Island Creamery and take a look at this place for myself.
Stepping into Island Creamery, you'll notice the crowd inside being mostly students in uniforms, gathering around tables with tubs of ice cream. Seems like the place has become a place for students to gather after school, which reduced the marks on its ambience as it was quite noisy, making the place less attractive for a relaxing afternoon treat.
However, like what Claudia mentioned, the many pictures of the different people who have stepped into Island Creamery filled the walls. For me, I really like this concept. Sitting there and just staring at the photos-filled walls, it was a good feeling seeing the smiles and observing every one in the pictures. Serious ones, heartwarming ones, and of cuz, some hilarious ones as well.. =)
Due to the lack of seats, we settled ourselves at the children's corner at the side and..it was a really nice place to be in. :) With the photos filled with happy people on your left, and colourful drawings of animals & characters on your right, it was just like being in a bright and colourful world. :D
However, we weren't really in the mood for ice cream and chose to try their mudpie ($4.80) instead. Wow. The mudpie there is gooooood~ With the smooth texture of the ice cream between the toppings of crushed Oreo™ biscuits and a thin chocolate base, it was heavenly! ^^
A must-try! :)
The next time I go, I shall try their unique ice-cream flavours then. :)
When my parents heard that I've gotten a chance from Yebber to taste the tau sa piahs from 603 Tau Sa Piah @ Balestier, they were excited and raving about how good the tau sa piahs were.. Curious, I was also excited to taste them after I got it.
Locating 603 Tau Sa Piah was not at all difficult. I drove there and though there were many other shops offering tau sa piahs along the street as well, 603 Tau Sa Piah just stood out from the rest with it's signboard and easy location of being just at the corner, when I walked in from the carpark.
Arriving at the shop, the variety of items available just made my eyes blur while scanning around. Tau sa piahs of many flavours were available, and some of them were really creative flavours that you wouldn't expect to find in such a traditional treat like tau sa piahs. Haha..but seriously, their large apple pie caught most of my attention. At the same time, I was also wondering how on earth would that large apple pie taste like. Too bad I didn't get one to satisfy my curiosity. :(
Nevertheless, the lady at the shop was really friendly and generous. She was all smiles while serving me and telling me each of the flavours that she was putting into the box. Thus, I received tau sa piahs of flavours: Black Sesame, Salty, Durian, Coffee, Yam, Lotus, Original. Not only that, they have generously included their chicken pie, tuna puff and bbq cha siew bun for me to try as well! My supper that day was really fulfilling. :)
For me that day, I had their Chicken Pie, Durian & Salty filling tau sa piahs. The Chicken Pie was really delicious! :) The crust was thin and light, whereas the filling within the pie was generous. The creamy sauce within the pie made it even tantalising on the tastebuds. It was not at all dry like some other chicken pies, though I only ate it after a few hours after I got it from the shop. And with the generous sauce inside, I'm really surprised that the crust did not get soggy! Really, I wanted more after I had that one. :P
As for their tau sa piahs, the one with Durian filling was really nice. It was light and not at all sticky nor strong-flavoured. Refreshingly sweet and..it wouldn't make you feel sick of it after a few bites, despite the generous fillings. It was just..just nice. Appropriate amount and size, in my opinion. It...doesn't make you sick of eating it, yet it leaves you wanting more, in a way. xP
The Salty flavoured one was also the same. The saltiness was just nice and was just enough to make a delicious and lip smacking little treat. ;)
My bf had the Black Sesame and Coffee flavoured one and he commented that they were really good. With the thin crust and generous fillings, it really made it a good treat. The coffee had a sweet taste that was also just nice, and it left a really nice light coffee taste in the mouth after that. :)
As for the rest, it was shared between my parents and I, each trying a little of each. The Yam flavoured another one of my favourite as it was surprisingly lightly sweet and has a smooth texture. Usually, I'll find some yam fillings really sweet and..too sticky. But, this was an exception. Hence, I happily finished off the rest of the Yam tau sa piah all by myself in the end. :P
And more importantly, I do agree with Snowbringer that these tau sa piahs do taste as good even after keeping them for a few days before consumption. The crust still tasted great, being firm yet soft at the same time.
Overall, I'll greatly recommend the pastries and tau sa piah at 603 Tau Sa Piah to everyone! The quality of their stuff are really good. Every pastry and tau sa piah seemed to have been made to an appropriate level, where you won't get sick of their generosity (their fillings), and would want to have more of it instead! :)
I'll definitely go back to get more the next time, especially their large apple pies! :D
Went to Timbre once with my friends, and..it's really a nice place to hang out. ;)
With the great band and nice ambience, it's the perfect place for you to hang out and spend time with your friends. But..if there's a huge crowd and loud music, it's definitely not a place for chats. Just chilling and enjoying the music will be fine. :)
And..yeah, pray that it doesn't rain because it is mostly unsheltered. :P
Stepping into this elaborate restaurant, you'll feel as though you have went back into time and reached old Shanghai.
This time travel experience was due to the furnish & decorations within the restaurant, which even had singers in traditional chinese costumes, belting out Chinese oldies on a standing mike, like the old times. Honestly, the ambience was quite nice. :)
As for the food...
Like any other restaurants of fine dining, the portions of the food served was quite small, but the quality was good. Of all the dishes, I remembered the Steamed Egg with Shreded Scallop. It was smooth and had quite an interesting blend in the tastes. The cold dish served was also not bad.
Other than that, most of the dishes like Sharks' Fin or Steamed Fish, were quite normal and expected. Nothing interesting in the tastes.
Hmm. Overall, I think that the ambience probably is the best thing dining there. :P
My bf and I were randomly walking in Compass Point a few days ago, when we chanced across this hotdog place. Decided to try it out, and..we had their Chicago beef hotdog meal.
The hotdog took a while so we started on the mini bowl of potato salad first. And..to be honest, it was quite horrible. For me, it just tasted weird and..totally not what potato salad should taste like. I wouldn't even have guessed that it was potato salad if you didn't tell me. x(
For the orange juice? Sunkist Orange was the guess.
When the hotdog finally came, it was..actually quite okay. Not bad for the quality. However, with the small portion and lower-than-expected quality in the salad and drink, the amount paid for the meal was not really worth it. A meal from BK would be much better I guess, though it'll be more costly, of course..
But..just a sidenote: I think that the aunties serving there, had really nice and friendly attitude towards their customers, which made it..not that bad an experience. :)
