Happened to be around Kallang couple weeks ago and we went to check out the totally revamped Leisure Park.
The last image I had of that place was run down and sleezy. Before the close for renovation, I remember going there for BK and buying cheap stickers at push carts around the first level. There was also this game arcade where I used to waste my time at while waiting for fireworks on NDP day.
Now, the place looks so much brighter and bigger. However there were many empty shops still when I went. Based on my memory, there was a Subway, a foodcourt (filled with aunties and uncles), a toy collector shop, a pet shop (with no pets), some fashion stores, a game shop and few gift shops open. Think there's also a cold storage at the basement if I'm not wrong. (I'm old... memory's failing me...)
Guess this place is not going to be that happening as yet. Unless there's some event at the stadiums. But once the train starts its service there, crowd might just start picking up.
I wouldn't suggest you to choose this place for a window shopping mall for now. Give it a couple more months. Hope more shops will be opened. And seems like a cinema or sort might also be opening there. (Top level wasn't accessible yet when I was there.)
Giving it a 2/5 for now. Will review again when I revisit them later next year.
Tamon is a small Japanese eatery located along East Coast Road near 928 Laksa. It had been sitting quietly in its corner for years and I was really tempted to try. Its opening hours are quite limited. They are open from 12-2pm (weekdays) and 6-10pm (weekdays and weekends). They aren't open on Public Holidays. Finally after one failed attempt (reached there and they weren't open), we managed to enter this place, frequented by Japanese in the area.
Seating for this place is for about 30-40, with about 4 tables of 4 outside. It is pretty cramped with the seats very close to each other. You can't have two larger sized people sitting back to back otherwise they would have a really hard time getting out.
They have a variety of items however they only have 5 dinner sets to choose from. Dinner sets are the best bargain at about $20 . The rest of the items are at normal prices which aren't very cheap.
Food Ordered: Tamon Bento Dinner Set A
The Tamon Bento ($26) consisted of sashimi, tempura, saba shioyaki, chawanmushi served with miso soup and rice. Both sets had a variety of sashimi and tempura which were sizeable and fresh (sashimi). The batter for the tempura was pretty good and it wasn't oily. The saba shioyaki (grilled mackerel) was well done, retaining its taste without being too "fishy". The best item here was the chawanmushi. Its texture was very smooth. One of the best I've tasted really.
Dinner Set A ($26) consisted of sashimi, tempura, chicken teriyaki served with miso soup and rice. The extra item here would be the Chicken teriyaki. It was a pretty sizeable serving so I shared it with my friend. Nicely done with very little fatty bits which is what I like.
In terms of service they were slow to respond at times even when there were only a few people. They were quick to tend to regulars though.
So I took one star off due to the service and limited opening hours. Parking isn't too easy too in the area.
Ice cream, who doesn't love a good ice cream in the middle of a hot day to soothe the heat and calm our high strung nerves? This is exactly what i was hoping to achieve when i tried out this little ice cream outlet at Plaza Singapura on this hot and humid day.
Tiramisu and Green Mint with Chocolate - Different is how i would describe the experience i had. The green mint tasted very strong and strangely 'clean', meaning it tastes pretty much like toothpaste which hits the spot for me since its such a hot day. Tiramisu, on the other hand tasted like a mixture of fat free chocolate and coffee together which did not reconcile with my idea of how tiramisu should taste like. The cone was horrible and very bland, lacking in flavors or any taste whatsoever. These were my initial impressions along with my gf.
After i got home and did some research however, i realized the reason why the ice cream tasted so different is due to the focus on health instead of taste. That is why the ice cream tastes wierd, because of the minimal use of milk or cream in them. Azabu Soba is a health based tea house concept developed in Japan and currently spread throughout the Asian region. The main outlet at Marina Square is said to serve good and healthy food according to online reviews which i just might try out again one day.
Health concept shops are all the rage these days since people are realizing that a huge variety of food outlets are serving junk food in order to cash in on the growing food industry. Though the ice cream does not cater to the majority in terms of taste, i still applaud their aim to bring a healthier dimension to the food industry. That is the only reason for me to dine at their main outlet one day. Hopefully, the food there is off a better standard then their ice cream.
After a whole day at VivoCity, it was time for dinner, and as expected, everywhere was packed with hungry people. And finally settled at The Mussel Guys as there wasn't any queue! But no queue doesn't been no good food.
The place was packed inside with people talking and children crying. Not quite the place to go for a romantic Xmas dinner. Can pass as a clean and comfortable place for friends to gather and enjoy fresh mussels.
We ordered Sauteed Mushrooms, Steamed Mussels (350g), Sausage Pasta and drinks.
The Sauteed Mushrooms, $4.50, was value for money. Serving was quite big for the price and the taste was just right. But if the mushrooms were not sliced that thinly, the taste would have been better.
Steamed Mussels, $15.90, with white wine and garlic arrived in their mussel pot, which you can purchase home at $180 . The mussels were fresh and there wasn't any fishy taste. At first we wanted to order the creamy or tomato base mussels as we were afraid that it'll taste fishy. But it didn't. Fresh and some were almost crunchy when bitten into. The white wine and garlic blended well with the mussels. I wouldn't say the taste was fantastics as I'd better ones before. But with the price, its still considered value for money.
I shan't comment much on the chicken Sausage Pasta, $12.90. I'll not order this again. It's not even average imo. Pay slightly more for another pot of mussels!
I'll go back there if I crave for mussels. Its value for money.
Owing to a comment from Claudia who said she got addicted to a western food stall across the street instead of Aston's, i paid a visit to Serangoon gardens yet again to ascertain if it actually qualifies as a competitor to Aston's Specialties.
Milo Dinosaur ($2) - Ordered this on a whim to try it out but it turned out to be ridiculously expensive. The preparation process is rather simple as well. Get hot water, add milo and milk till it saturates, add ice and pile lots of milo on top. I have no idea what possessed me to pay $2 for this but it is definitely not worth it.
Tomato Soup with Garlic Toast (Free) - Free stuff is always good. And here we got ourselves some warm tomato soup and garlic bread. The bread was your run-of-the-mill garlic bread which really isn't worth mentioning and but pairing it with the soup does give it a decent taste. Not too bad but not good either.
Grilled Sirloin Steak ($8.80) - After the mediocre appetizer, the main course is served. At its price, the sirloin was a decent size and thickness but that is about all its redeeming features. I specifically asked for medium rare, which is the only way i have steak and what i got was undoubtedly a 'well done' steak. What this means is that the steak loses its fibrous texture and is overcome with a tougher meat texture that makes you chew that much more. Not that there was much taste to go with it, the pepper sauce covers just about everything and i can't taste much of my steak, it could be chicken for all i know. The sides, which are fixed, aren't worth mentioning.
Grilled Chicken Chop ($6.80) - My dad had a better choice. The chicken chop is slightly charred and had a smoky taste. The mushroom sauce added a certain dimension to the taste as well. The meat is tender and juicy enough to be worth a mention.
Fish and Chips ($5.80) - The fish and chips were lightly breaded and had a thin layer of batter, which is good. The meat however, lacked bite nor taste but the portion size is decent and worthwhile. It was also less oily then expected and for better or worse, its the most worthwhile item of the night and seriously, that isn't saying much.
At $22 for 3 people, this is a very affordable combination considering it came with free soup and garlic bread. We also walked away rather filled though taste wise, its more then a little forgettable.
Below average and not in contention for the western food title at Serangoon Gardens, Aston's Specialties, though looking less glamorous and costing a fair bit more, is still more worth a visit if taste matters to you as much as it does to me. Claudia, time to try Aston's out to find out what you have been missing.
Finally, we get down to business and do a write up on none other then the coveted Donut Factory. Currently available in only 2 locations in town, this orange box means you've either lined up for 2 hours or more for your favorite little fried pastry. I'd like to reiterate once again, i am not a donut lover and asking me to line up for 2 hours for a donut is a suggestion bordering on insane. However, i did find a smaller queue on this very fortunate day and so, we queued, waited and scored!
After an astonishingly long wait of...... 15 minutes (!!!!), i got my hands on a huge assortment of donuts from this famous and much talk about pastry chain. That's right, 15 minutes was all it took and thats a far cry from what i've been told. Even better, most of the flavors were present, i bought 2 boxes of 12 and the other box had the Double Chocolate flavor, which is deemed one of the most popular items. Anyway, as of present, i have tasted 2 flavors with the third gone before i could try. They are the peanut butter glazed donut, the Raspberry dark chocolate and the spicy cheese flavored donut.
Peanut butter glazed donut has a generous filling of peanut butter within and has a nice glazed surface of sugar which really enhances the taste but may come across as a tad too sweet for some. The raspberry dark chocolate tasted normal in the beginning as i couldn't make out the dark chocolate nor raspberry taste. Its saving grace came about halfway through the donut when its thick, sweet and sour raspberry filling oozed out for a satisfying spin on the taste. Finally, the spicy cheese flavored was devoured by my mom very quickly while she kept exclaiming how fragrant and tasty it was as compared to the other donut company i've been reviewing. Across the board, i believe the main difference in their offerings is the quality of the dough. It was uniformly softer and less porous when compared to other donuts i've had at this point. The fillings it offers also packs a stronger punch as compared to other would be imitators. Delightful!
Does it live up to the hype? In terms of donuts, the answer is a resounding YES. Can waiting 2 hours for its donuts be justified? Unfortunately, i would say no. At least not for the flavors i've had thus far. Donuts are known for being quick munchies and for stemming pangs of hunger, they are not known as a luxury item that demands a long waiting time. =P I suppose the next donut comparison will probably be the original Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme in USA. Till then, the Donut Factory can tide you over till you get the real thing.
Went to mediacorp to collect some things in the morning, than proceeded to Adam Road Food Centre with my friend for breakfast after that. I know it's kinda funny and embarassed saying this, but this is actually my first time there. And i was quite surprised to see alot of stalls selling Nasi Lemak, easily there were at least 10stalls selling Nasi Lemak, at some even selling side by side. Anyway, my friend knew the place and she brought me to this small stall located at a corner, Adam's Nasi Lemak.
Apparantly, the stall must be of serving nasi lemak of some standard from the many reviews on the stall, and while we were queeing up for the nasi lemak, i could already smell the fragrance of the freshly fried chicken wings, anyway, i ordered a Sutra Set $4 for ( rice, chicken wing, fishcake, ikan billis, otah, chilli and egg )
Let me comment on each of the different items, first comes the rice, the rice is fragrant, and the grains are full and plump, and each grain is separated from one another, unlike some where the rice is like those sushi rice, sticky. The portion of the rice is also not meagre, it's sufficient.
Next, the chicken, firstly its piping hot, next as i had mentioned above, the chicken is very fragrant, when i sunk my teeth into the chicken, you can hear the " crr crr " sound, the crsipiness of the chicken, also the juices of the chicken just oozes into your mouth, sedap! if i am not wrong, they put curry powder and some other spices into the marination.
The otah however is not as good as the chicken, the otah is quite thin, but the filling is quite generous, you can actually really taste chunks of fish, the seasoning is not too bad, spicy enough, although i had prefer it to be hot.
The ikan billis is with the roasted peanuts, and the ikan billis and peanuts is very crispy, very crunchy. The peanuts and ikan billis is also not too salty, and the seasoning is just nice.
Now comes the main star, the chilli, the sambal chilli one word, SHIOK! it's spicy enough, the spicyness of the chilli is just so great, that you will want to yearn for more, just that's it's in the morning, and i am afraid of a stomach upset, i did not ask more, if not i will ask for a second serving of chilli.
Also the stall looks very clean and tidy, it's quite hygenic also i think, given the A rating by the NEA. The service of the stallholder which is a elderly couple is also good, they are very friendly and looks very approachable.
Overall, great nasi lemak, the best chilli and good chicken as well, must try guys. It's quite cheap as well, $4 for quite alot of ingrdients.
Galbiati Gourmet Deli, located along upper bukit timah road, it's a clean and cosy deli tucked in a quiet neighbourhood. Went there today with my cousin for dinner. The whole place looks very italian, perhaps due to the fact that the owner is an italian himself, anyway when you walked inside, you will be welcome by this wide array of cold side dishes, from olives to zucchini to many more, there is also a counter selling various tempting desserts and one more counter selling beverages, also there's a pizza counter.
Well, so we ordered a hawailan pizza to share, i ordered a lamb shank pasta, hazlenut chocolate tart. First, i shall comment on the pasta, firstly the portion of the lamb shank is quite huge, and the lamb shank is very tender, yet when cut, the meat does not become so brittle, it's just right. Next, the pasta sauce is a tomato-based sauce, with tomato chunks, mushrooms, the sauce is not too thick and also not too thin, it tastes a compliment of sweet and sour, although i had i prefer it to be sour abit. The pasta is this green type of pasta, i am not sure what it is called, is this green rectangular noodles, when complimented with the pasta, there's just one word, delicious. I also tried the Carbonara which my cousin ordered, It's this cream-based sauce pasta, with roasted ham on top, the pasta sauce is fantastic, very creamy, soothing and also very sinful. The pasta goes very well with the sauce, and the portion is not too big as well, i guess because you will get sick of eating too much creamy stuffs. Next comes the pizza, the pizza's crust is thin and crispy, the ham is tender and looks fresh, while the pineapple is juicy, the only thing i would prefer is to make it more cheesy. For my dessert, i ordered a hazlenut chocolate tart and also tiramisu, the tart was just simply gorgeously sinful. The taste of the chocolate and the hazlenut with the tart is just shiok!, you will get that type of this is what life's indulgences are all about, the tiramisu is also very good, creamy, the coffee taste is there, soft and spongy,
Overall, very good food, i'm sure to make a return visit, the best part, no gst, service charge all at nett price, good service. The price is quite reasonable also, think my pasta cost 18bucks, and tart cost 5bucks, really money worth it.
Hopped into Sketches with a friend for dinner one day. I 'd always wanted to try this place with its DIY pasta but I never had the chance till recently.
We were all excited to be able to make our own pastas. Much like creators of our own destines really. It was exciting to be able to put together your favourite ingredients in hope of making a great pasta dish.
We ordered: Garlic Bread 2 Mushroom Soups 2 Pasta Dishes (custom made-Hungry size) - Fusilli in Napoletana (Italian Tomato Sauce) with bacon, ham, mushroom and green peas - Fusilli and Spaghetti in Alfredo Sauce with garlic, carrots, bacon, mushroom and chicken
The garlic bread was pretty normal, done with the store-bought garlic spreads. Not quite worth the money though but I like to have my soup with bread.
The Soups were served with smaller pieces of garlic bread. I enjoyed the soup as it was thick and flavourful. And very filling. Next time I'll probably share it so that I can leave more space for my creation.
Claudia was right to say that "Hungry size" which is the smaller size is definitely able to fill any regular eater and more. Quite a large portion really so I can't imagine what Starving Size looks like. Mine which is the one in the Napoletana Sauce was quite ... average. I'm obviously not a good pasta designer. The ingredients I picked were similiar in taste so there wasn't any variation, resulting in a edible but uninteresting dish. My companion's pasta was much better. It had garlic in it which made the dish very fragrant, a nice sharp contrast to the rest of the ingredients.
The service was generally good. Water was topped up and the people were patient with us as we asked about the items. The only thing is that the bill came really slowly which made me think that they had forgotten.
The damage was slightly under $45, which I think is pretty reasonable for sizeable servings. It was enough for 3 people, so the two of us couldn't finish.
I would be back for more... and will remember to have garlic next time :)
Since its located just opposite my school, and i have long heard about my friends saying how good, how fantastic Botak Jones is, and of course as a food enthusiast, i would not give up a chance of having to savour such highly reccomended flavours, i went there one day after school with my friends to try. My verdict, i was kinda dissapointed, perhaps my expectations of them were too high, but i was really kinda dissapointed. I still remember their slogan " damm good food at a damm good price " : i would agree to the damm good price part, because the portions are big, and it's quite economical, but as for the damm good food, i guess its all up to oneself, at least not for me.
Anyway, i ordered a Cajun Chicken, can't really remember the price, think its about $7-$8, anyway i waited for about 15minutes for the food to come, served with coleslaw and fries, the portion is huge, comparable to those sold in U.S anyway, i tried the coleslaw first, and i would say, its good, very crunchy and refreshing. The fries were crinkle-cut fries, with some kinda powder on top, if i am not wrong its either chilli powder or red pepper powder, anyway the fries is good as well, hot and crispy, very unqiue kind of taste. The funny thing is this, the side dishes are great, but the main dish is a dissapointment, the chicken was tender but dry, i would prefer if there were juices in the chicken, also i feel the marination of the chicken is not enough, its as though only the outer layer is being marinated, the inside is white and dry, i mean i know its supposed to be white, but certain cajun chickens i have tried elsewhere, when you slice the chicken, there is fragrant smell of spicy peppery smell.
Overall, good side dishes, poor main course. good price, location wise, if you are familiar, it's rather easy, if not would take some time finding the place, another plus point, service staffs there are very friendly and attentive, they will also ask for feedback which is a good point.

We ordered:
Garlic Bread
2 Mushroom Soups
2 Pasta Dishes (custom made-Hungry size)
- Fusilli in Napoletana (Italian Tomato Sauce) with bacon,
ham, mushroom and green peas
- Fusilli and Spaghetti in Alfredo Sauce with garlic, carrots,
bacon, mushroom and chicken
