Went there last week to eat after a swim at the nearby swimming complex. Walked into the place, typical air-conditioned food court, very clean and pleasant looking, there are even plasma televisons on the wall, i must say nowadays, companies are coming up with various gimmicks to attract customers. Anyway, i should say i was spoilt for choices due to the fact of a wide variety of food, but when i was walking around, i couldn't see one to my liking, so that's quite a dissapointment, i think next time if i ever venture into the food business, i would consolidate all the good makan gurus ( if i can persuade them ) and set up a concept-style food court, omg, i am supposed to comment on the food, not my ambition. lols.
Anyways, i settled for a Nasi Kuning at the Indonesian BBQ stall, it looks the most pleasant, in fact it looks quite appealing. It costs me $3.50 for plate of yellow rice, curry chicken drumstick, achar and keropok. Quite value for money i would say, given the fact that the serving of the rice is quite sufficient and the portion of the chicken is quite big. Also the yellow rice is being drizzled over curry. Perhaps due to the fact after a swim, i am super duper hungry, i sat down, and immediately whacked on the rice, the yellow rice has this fragrant smell, a faint smell of herbs, think they use basmati rice, the ones used for the briyanis. The curry sauce on the rice is just great, i can actually do without the chicken, because the curry is just spicy yet the gravy is not too thick, and although its over the rice, you can still taste the original taste of the yellow rice, which if i am not wrong takes a long time to prepare. Next i come to the chicken, other than the fact that the portion is huge, the chicken is a dissapointment, firstly the chicken is not fresh, when you bite, the meat is tough and rough, and you will know its not fresh, because fresh chicken meats are supposed to be tender and springy. The achar is not bad, its makes you wanna eat more rice, in a sense it whets the appetitie. Its sour and spicy and crunchy. And the keropok is just the typical keropok, not much hoo-haa about it.
Overall, i am quite impressed with the rice and achar, and given the fact that its a food court, with air-conditioned dining environment, i am quite pleased. The only improvement would be the chicken.
Was invited for a dinner at Sketches last night. Never really wanted to try this place out, so I didn't know what to expect from this place. The first impression I got when I stepped in was the smell from the kitchen. It's open concept kitchen is right smack in the center of the restaurant. And the smell will get stuck to your clothes and hair after you're done dining. Hence not recommended if you're not heading home after meal at Sketches. Alternatively, try to sit outside away from the Kitchen. It might help reduce the lingering "Food court" after smell on you.
As we were late, the menu was cleared from the table as others had already ordered. We attempted couple of time to get someone to give us a menu, and only after thrice before we caught a waitress. (All of them seemed to be busy clustering somewhere behind the restaurant...)
We were presented 2 different menu. One with listing of all ala carte orders and the other one which looks like a giant notepad where you have boxes to tick and create your own "Designer" pasta. My bf choice to go for the pasta and I ordered the wild mushroom pizza.
First the pasta came, and after "digging" through the plate, we discovered that they got our order wrong. We choice 2 different pasta but they only used one. We told the waitress and she cleared the plate and got the kitchen to remake for us. (Yes we saw her dumping the entire plate of pasta into the bin when she walked back to the kitchen. Advantage of an open concept kitchen for customers.)
The right combination of pasta arrived shortly. The taste was pretty good. And the serving for the small size is already quite filling. Unless you're super hungry or sharing with friends, I'll not recommend you to tick the bigger servings.
They took quite a long time to serve my mushroom pizza. When it finally arrived, I was disappointed. The pizza was alittle too tough on the dough and the shrooms on it were tasteless. The cheese wasn't well spread and I was only able to taste the cheese on few slices of the entire pizza. The rest were just covered with few pieces of sliced shrooms. I had to whack quite abit of shredded cheese and tabasco sauce on the pizza to make it taste slightly better.
Overall the place was quite nice, pricing was reasonable. I'll probably go back for their pasta since I can choose what I want in it and I'll totally avoid the pizzas.
Went there ( Bishan Branch ) for a gathering with friends last week. Went there with huge anticipation of the food there, because i have long heard about the great milk teas and "po luo" buns at these hongkong-inspired cafes. However, i was largely dissapointed, perhaps because my expectations of them were to high.
First things first, like the previous review said, the concept about the paying is very confusing, first we were asked to seat, than after ordering, we were told to pay at the cashier, its like wth, can't you tell you us to order first at the door, saving us the trouble of having to walk up and down, and also the drinks are self-service, in a way. You order the drinks, you pay the money, and you take it yourself. This is one big minus point, i mean to attract customers, the cafe must present itself in a way that it's customer-oriented, for example, they should just let you pay your bill at the counter after the meal, and not before the meal, its not as if we would run away without paying, also the drinks should be served, and not self-service. If like that, might as well i go to coffeshops or hawker centres.
Next comes to the food, as i had already eaten that evening, i just ordered a zha jiang mian, i know its weird to order that in a hongkong cafe, but that's the cheapest noodle in the menu, and i think it costs about 8bucks or 6bucks, can't really remember. Anyway i also ordered a glass of milk tea, so of course the milk tea was here first, since we took it ourselves, the milk tea is just average, just the typical milk tea, except i find that the tea is somewhat has a bitter taste, i know teas have bitter taste, but normal teas have a fragrant dry slight biter taste, but this is not to my liking. Next comes the noodle, oh my god, the serving can only be described in one word : pathectic, its either they are trying to save on costs or they are encouraging the customers not to eat so much, but either way its really horrible. I could easily finish the noodles in the least 3mouhfuls the most 4-5.
and the noodles are not that fantastic as well, the plating of the dish is nice, big white plate, noodles in the centre. I mean even a child knows that by doing that, the food will look visually appealing, but that the taste is otherwise. The noodle is not that springy, and the sauce is too thick, not enough of vinegar in the marination of the meat. Its not the original zha jiang mian.
So overall, convenient place, the food can be improved on, ambience is average, price a little too steep for that kind of food standard.
Eating while dangling on the air - such novelty. haha. Pleasant experience at the start. We were looking forward to dining on the cable car and watching the sunset at Harbour front so we made a reservation for 6:30pm.
Booking was made online and we pre ordered one grilled beef and one pan fried salmom when we made the booking.
Arriving at Mt Faber, we left the valet do the job (at $5) and off we went to the entrace of the cable car tower. There were quite a few people queuing up for sky dining and we were like the 6th couple in line...all bookings must be made before hand. No walk-ins allowed, at least that is what we were told.
We noticed that the sky dining cable cars had a table placed in between the 2 seats. So when it came our turn, we hopped onto one of them as it moved slowly. Then the waiter came by and served us the soup and appetizer for the 1st round. He had to do it quickly as the cable car was moving. So do not expect him to be gentle. Then again he will not "throw" the soup at you. haha.
The first round was an experience indeed. Eating 100m up in the air and watching the sun set what more could we ask for. We had the cream of mushroom soup and it was thick and well blended. It's kinda hard to eat and concentrate on the scenery and at the same time try to balance ourselves as the cable car can be quite shaky at times. There is also this nagging feeling that the glass filled with ice water will topple any time or the bowl of soup would slide off the table. Also since I have a thing with heights, drinking the soup and the salad was quite a challenge. But all said, we finished our soup and waited expectantly for the second course. The cable car went all the way to sentosa, made a u-turn and headed back to Mt Faber.
At Mt faber, the waiter quickly cleared our bowl of soup and served us the second course. ha....I forgot, he served us ice water and house wine and he had to make it fast, otherwise the cable car will move off without it or he might spill it all over the table. It is amazing to see how they manage to juggle all that within 1min I think and off we went with our second (main) course. There were at least 3 persone (I think) serving each cable car. One to clear the dishes, one to pour wine and the other to serve the main course. It happened so fast that we just did not know what happened. So service wise they were efficient and attentive. Before it moved off, the waiter asked if he could get us anything else. We spared him the trouble as we were wondering how he can manage to get us anything else if the cable car was moving off. So we said no thank you.
All I remember about the Beef tenderloin was that it done just right because halfway through the second round on the u-turn back to Mt Faber we started to feel the effects of motion sickness. haha. Never expected that. We joked that we had one more round to go...round 3...kinda like in the boxing ring waiting for the knockout punch. Actually also forgot much of the grilled salmon, execpt that there was some fishly after taste....so much for the meal. :(
The last dish was highly anticipated as it was the dessert. But when it arrived, we did not have the appetite to consume it as the cradling effects of the cable car got into us. Nevertheless we manage (yes...manage...seems like quite hard eh) to finish it.
Yes and not to mention, they served house wine also. Which we could not finish. Again we joked that if we finished the whole glass (coupled with the cradling effect of the cable car), we might just puke out of the cable car into the road or onto the people walking on the ground...funny sight indeed viewed from afar. But nothing like this happened....fortunately.
Overall the experience was good..minus the to and frow movement of the cable car. Food was average. Service was beyond expectation and ambience was good initially. But after going 3 rounds, that means 6 times seeing the same scenery, you kinda get tired of it after a while and just wished the cable car stopped and you can take your meal on more stable ground.
The experience cost us $90 per person. Recommended for a new experience...but not a culinary one.
Not too salty. That is the key thing. The soup base is flavourful. I have tried other Sapporo Ramen, this one is quite close to the authentic one that I had in Hokkaido. :D
The char siu melts in your mouth. The eggs are perfectly 80% done. I love the 80% cooked yolk! It's like the Marutama's Ajitsuke Tamago!
I went to their Takeway Kiosk instead of restaurant or cafe at the Raffles City.
Raffles City (Takeaway Kiosk) 252 North Bridge Road #B1-49 S(179103)
I saw them selling Oden! I love Oden!
I bought everything they sell. One strange thing is that they go with Curry sauce. Not the traditional kind that I ate at Takashima basement. The curry is the Jap curry. But I still prefer the traditional kind that goes with the bonito soup base.
Was at a blogger event last night at Essential Brew. The place was cosy and nice. I like the way they did up the upper deck. But for those with smelly feet, you might want to stay on the lower deck. (Cos you need to remove your shoes if you dine at the upper floor.) And ladies in super mini skirt, please avoid too. Or bring a jacket. :)
I forgot to take a look at the menu, was busy taking photos of it but didn't flip it open.
I had the Cajun Dory and I enjoyed it. (Although it was already cold when I ate it.) The fish was still crispy outside and the softness inside is nice. There was no fishy smell and the cajun blended well with the fish. The rice that came with it was something unique. It looked like curry sauce at first but it was sweet. I lovee it so much I cleared off the entire plate! The rice has a sauce over it which tasted like Oolong tea. It gives a refreshing feeling.
The desserts were served complimentary. For my table it was a brownie like cake with ice-cream. It doesn't taste like brownie so I'm calling it chocolate cake. This one I would probably give it a miss as it was not to my liking.
Now that I've got their discount card, I'll most probably be going back when I have time to travel all the way to Holland Village. I want to try their other dishes! The Crispy Lemongrass Chicken and the Honey Mastard Chicken looks nice too.
At first glance, we thought that Marche had changed their name to Vilage, pronounced as vee-lah-jay. The ordering system was the same, food was also the same and everything else looked similar. Vilage was also occupying the same place as Marche at the basement of Heeren. What can we say but good marketing move to open a similar styled restaurant occupying the same premise as your competitor.
We dined at Marche a few times and the experience at Vilage was no difference. We went for our personal favourite... the rosti. Looked and tasted the same. Only later did we realise that about 10 of Vilage's pioneering staff were from Marche. They crossed over together with Marche's former kitchen and operating manager.
Does that explain the similarities in the mascot also?
We had the Baked Cod fish $14.50 and that was all it was on the plate. One piece of baked cod fish. Side dishes were no where in sight. The taste and texture of the fish was nothing to shout about. It was creamy and juicy and tasted like the one we cooked ourselves, except that the fish we cooked was larger in size. :)
Perhaps there is something different in the Vilage with Marche. Most of the portions have shrunked - rosti, pasta, pizza, etc, except the Erdinger Beer. haha.
Our total bill came up to $45 for 2 persons and we were still hungry. Maybe must eat more.
Curry rice hunting lead us to this place touted as one of the best in Singapore. The queue was not too long and we were able to have our first bite in about 10 min.
Like all curry rice, we had to stop the uncle from "messing" up the rice and the dishes with tons and tons of curry, gravy and whatever it was that he poured on it. Perhaps that is how it should be eaten. But that was not to our liking. Despite pulling the brakes on the gravy the plate was still covered with much of it.
The pork chop was medium sized and tasted ok. It was rather soft and it did not feel crisp. Perhaps the gravy softened it. The rest of the other dishes were just about there. Nothing to crave about. We will still stick to our fav stall at Maxwell Road Food Center.
Went there to celebrate my mum's birthday. Stepped into the place, what first greeted me was the great hospitabilty of the service staff there and also the decor, which is very cosy and simple. This fine-dining restaurant serves fusion cuisine, the chef Frankie Ding serves up brilliant dishes comparable to those of reknowned chefs like Sam Leong.
For the appetizer, i had this foie gras and shredded confit duck salad, the foie gras is just sinfully greatly sinful, if there's such a description. the foie gras is pan fried and the duck is wrapped in sort of a "popiah" skin that is crisp and with the salad, is just amazing. the foie gras basically just melts in your mouth, and you will yearn for another bite once you tried it.
For my soup i had this shark cartilage soup with lobster meat
its this clear soup
with shark cartilage boiled for six hours, with fresh bamboo fungus,
golden mushrooms and cilantro and also lobster meat of course.
the taste is quite peppery, and its like those
very thick broth with a punch of chinese herbs, and is very soothing. the shark cartilage is very tender, the only
regret i would say is that the golden mushroom does not really go well with the soup.
but the lobster meat is tender and you can taste the sweetness of the lobster itself
overall, the soup was nice.
for my main course, i had this rack of lamb
suprisingly, this lamb does not have any foul smell.
the lamb is tender to the cut, and is quite juicy.
very nice herb sauce, goes well with the lamb
the lamb is marinated till well, unlike some other
places where you still can smell the foul smell of
the lamb itself.
overall, great dining ambience, great place, great food
great company.
:)

very thick broth with a punch of chinese herbs, and is very soothing. the shark cartilage is very tender, the only
regret i would say is that the golden mushroom does not really go well with the soup.
but the lobster meat is tender and you can taste the sweetness of the lobster itself
overall, the soup was nice.
for my main course, i had this rack of lamb
suprisingly, this lamb does not have any foul smell.
the lamb is tender to the cut, and is quite juicy.
very nice herb sauce, goes well with the lamb
the lamb is marinated till well, unlike some other
places where you still can smell the foul smell of
the lamb itself.
overall, great dining ambience, great place, great food
great company.
