My friend and I decided to try out this place for lunch after reading rather good reviews from some of the food blogs.
This place was really secluded thus there wasn't much of a crowd. Including us, there are only a total of 4 people eating.
My friend ordered the chicken zoni set. He said it was pretty refreshing. The homemade glutinous rice cakes in the soup was really good and at the right "mochi" texture.
I ordered the unatamaju (unagi egg) set. OMG is all i can say. It does not taste like your standard commercial sweet unagi. You can totally tell that it's homemade. It's very soft and goes really well with the peppery egg.
For dessert, we had the matcha pudding and the caramel pudding. both were pretty good but i preferred the caramel one more. the matcha pudding itself does not have much of a taste but the azuki did have a contrast to it.
As for the service, it was good. The chef herself came out and asked us if the food was to our liking. She's so cute.
We paid $50 for 2 persons. There's a 10% discount if you pay in cash during lunch. :D
The main thing which i love about shokudo would be the ambiance. it's a wonderful place to hang out with friends. The food was pretty affordable as well except for the grilled skewers which were pretty pricey.
This time round, i had the wasabi prawn omelette. it was very worth it due to the amount of prawns used. During my previous visits, I tried the omu-rice with chicken chop, mushroom pizza and of course, their desserts.
i can never skip their desserts especially waffles with gelato. It's really good that they have uncommon flavours of gelato like rock melon ice cream, yuzu and many others. my favourites has got to be green tea, rock melon and strawberry yogurt. The waffles are thick, fluffy and very filling. so i would advise you not to eat such a heavy main course if you want dessert.
In total, i have visited shokudo for about 7 times and i would definitely go back for more.
My mom works near this place thus, I get to eat their stuff pretty often.
I remembered when she first brought back some of their golf ball pineapple tarts. I was amazed because I have never seen such huge pineapple tarts before. Took one bite and I felt like I was in heaven. The crust melts in your mouth and the pineapple filling was just perfect. They were very generous with the fillings as well.
Recently, my mom bought back their beancurd tarts which I thought was really good (I love tau huey!!!). I am the sort which likes more filling whereas my brother prefers more crust. So I was really happy when I saw that their crust was rather thin. However, the crust was really soft even though it didn't break while I handled it. I guess it's because the tarts had to be refrigerated, thus the texture. It was still good nonetheless. Not too sweet and no eggs used.
As feizhu mentioned above, it would be best to order their popular items as they get sold out pretty quickly.
The thing that I love most about cafe cartel would be their free flow of bread. Goes really well with their soups.
I guess cafe cartel is most well-known for their ribs. But too much of it would make you feel like dying seriously. It was fantastic on the first rib. Second rib was so-so. Third rib was making me quite full already. Fourth rib was too overpowering. So i suggest you share.
Had a plate of ribs all to myself and I left half of it untouched. I should have asked them to pack it so that I can bring it home.
My friend loves their sandwiches though. Have not tried it before but I will the next time.
As for the service on that day, it was alright. As it was a friday, the place was pretty packed. We could not manage to get the sofa seats. But the table beside us left after we ordered, so we asked if we could switch tables. They allowed us to and even helped us to shift our stuff over.
