||Awfully Chocolate||
I am a self declared chocolate addict, so whatever food that has chocolate in it, i will defintely love that, including milo. ha. With me so into chocolate, how can i miss this shop?
Awfully Chocolate may sound like the chocolate cake that they are selling are awful. ha. But one will never know unless they have tried it themselves. Yeah. So one fine day, i decide to just give it a try.
My very first step into the shop makes me wonder if im really in the correct place. This place has not big fridge with all the fancy cakes in it as you will find it in those typical cake shop. Funny.
Initially, i want to test out one slice of the cake, since its my first time visiting their cake shop. To my surprise, they actually do not sell their cake in slices. Instead, you have to buy the entire round cake before you can try out the taste.
There are basically 3 different flavours to choose from -- all chocolate, chocolate banana and chocolate rum and raisin. The appearance of their cakes is simple. No beautiful decoration. What you get to see its chocolate and chocolate among the layers of chocolate sponge cake.
Having seen soo much chocolate on the cake, i wonder if it will make one feel sick of chocolate. To my surprise, i did not feel sick after eating 2 slices of it. In fact, i can eat more if theres any left for me. ha.
Overall, it is a chocolate with quality. They use really good and whole lots of chocolates in their cakes which i think its really worth the price paid. Go on try it and one cake is definitely not enough.
||1A curry puffs||
Ok, i usually call these curry puffs as A1 curry puffs. Do not know why either but i guess A1 sound more familiar than 1A (perhaps it has something to do with the school grades). ha.
Whether is 1A or A1, i believe you all should know what i am talking about by now. Yes, its their curry puffs. They have quite abit of franchises all around singapore, most of them can be located in the central area.
Well, you may ask whats so special about this curry puffs that practically everyone is talking about it. Innovation is the key. They have came out with alot of different kinds of fillings beside the normal curry chicken filling that you will find in normal curry puffs.
They have divided their puffs into 2 different types -- sweet and savour. Can you imagine sweet fillings with curry puff crispy skin? ha. Its really abit hard to imagine unless you try it yourself.
The savour flavours include their all time favourite curry potato and chicken as well as sardines, black pepper chicken, otah, chilli crab chicken and veggie. As for their sweet fillings, they have yam, sweet corn and DURIAN!!! Yes, its our singapore durian puff.
Well, guess i still think its pretty werid to eat a curry puff skin with durain paste in it. Although their skin is super crispy and hard, their paste is very fragrant, i still love the curry potato and chicken puff. ha.
What actually amazed me is that i can actually taste the curry sauce!!! The sauce is not too watery nor too thick. Just nice when combined with the crispy puff, as it actually made the entire puff tasted not as dry.
Thumbs up for this innovation. Ohh, another thing, each of the curry puffs are nicely shaped into the pattern of 'yuan bao' which has the meaning of prosperity for chinese. Perhaps this will also bring prosperity for those who eat them. ha.
||The Shorts Shop||
Its not difficult to know what this shop is selling. ha. Basically, they sell SHORTS. Yes, its shorts. Varieties may be limited if compared with the rest of the fashion apparels shop, as they do not include pants, dress, skirts, blouse, etc in their shopping list.
You may not be able to try the shorts or feel the material used as they do not have any outlets in singapore yet (well, this is how online shopping works). However, i am won over by the varieties of shorts (never know there are actually so many kind of shorts) and pretty cute website.
They have nine different category of shorts available. These categories include denim, smart causal, causal, more coverage, tiny weeny, attention seeker, cant go wrong and chic. They even have a category for men. So both gender can shop for shorts together. ha.
For each different shorts design, they pictured it into 3 different views. The front, the back and the far view.
The far view enables you to see how the shorts fit nicely on to the human body. Rather considerating, i can say.
Besides the normal descriptions of the shorts, they even come with very detailed mesurements for waist, hip and thigh. This is pretty different compared to some of the apparel shops who only provide the waist measurements.
Their price is also indicated for every single design and is normally below $30. Whats more? They actually included belts and sashes to complement the shorts. You can find some really specially designed belts in here too.
Overall, i think this is a rather innovative idea to buy a shorts. As they do not have to pay for rental, you can expect their prices to be rather competitive.
||MADE WITH LOVE||
The first time when i saw this shop, i almost thought it was a newly set up cafe. Thats probably due to all the chalk writings on the black based board (usually seen in most cafe) and lots of food picture pasted on the wall. That time, I didnt dare to take a step into the place, fearing that they may charge me an extremely high price for a cup of coffee.
Yet, i saw many people in the store and each of them coming out of the store with a happy face. This makes me want to find out more about the store all the more.
Quite coincidentally, i stumbled into their website -- www.madewithlove.com.sg. From there, i realised that this shop is not entirely a cafe. This is actually a shop that sells all the stuffs that you will need for scrapbooking.
I love the way how they arrange all the imported acid and lignin free patterned papers and cardstocks. It allows you to scan through the papers easily, finding the most suitable colour papers to go with your photos.
Beside papers, this store also house alpha stickers, chipboards, embellishments, tools, etc used to beauify your layouts, and not forgetting they sell a wide variety of albums too so that you can store your layouts easily.
Every month, they will held several workshops to impart some of the scrapbooking techniques. You will get to practise these technique by doing layouts and even a mini album!!! You will also have the chance to know more people who enjoyed the same hobby -- scrapbooking as you.
Overall, this is a pretty good concept shop and a one stop place for people who enjoyed scrapbooking. You can save the hassle to run around looking for the products you want as most of them can be found in made with love.
||My Dining room @Central||
My Dining room is located in the Central, just above the Clarke Quay MRT Station. My Dining room is on the fourth storey of the mall. Probably due to its good location, one will get to enjoy a pretty nice river view while enjoying their food there.
You can find a number of restuarants in the central, but My dining room still stands out among them. This is because they are the one and only one food court found there. Beside this, they offer a wide variety of food at a normial fare.
Was at the dessert store, thinking of what to eat after my filling dinner. Just as i was deciding, i suddenly realize their prices is actually much higher than the rest of the kopitiam.
For a normal bowl of dessert will cost you less than $2 in normal kopitiam, however the same thing will sell you at $2.50.
Guess this is probably due to its good location, as for me, if the food served are of a better quality and quantity, im gladly to pay abit more. Better quality will means nicer taste in the food and quantity will means larger portion. ha.
Finally, settled on an aloe vera lime juice. This dessert is charged at an additional 60 cents as compare to other kopitiam outlets. Normally, i would not bother to look at what the aunty pour into my bowl of dessert, however today i actually looked at every single steps on how she do my aloe vera lime.
First, she scopped half a cup of lime juice. Ok, did not get to see how is the lime juice being prepared. But this lime juice bottle is not covered up at any times, which means uninvited particles may just rest on there?
Thereafter, she pour a scoup of alore vera -- about 5 tiny alore vera cubes. And she started to shred some ice on it.
After the shred ice filled half of the cup, she started to scoup the left over ice from the bottom plate and placed into my cup.
Am totally horrified, how can she simply put the half melted shred ice into my cup of lime juice. First, i do not know if the bottom plate is clean, or do they even clean it in the first place? Second, i do not know if the shred ice has been there for how long and the number of baterias they may have mulitply during the time?
In the end, i simply discard the entire cup into the dustbin. Guess, i will not dare to order anything from the dessert store again.
Alan Photo (usually known as AP by most photog forums) is the place to get all your photography needs. From the most basic for the everyday users to the most sophsicated systems for the pros. AP has it all!
As mentioned by Kilkenny above, the place looks kinda unfriendly when you step in the first time, but once you start talking or asking things with the staff there, you'll see how knowledgable, friendly and helpful they are.
If you're looking for a new camera or lens or accessories for your photography hobby, check them out at Sim Lim Square Level 1.
||BaliThai @West mal||
Just take a close look to the signboard -- BaliThai. It would not be too hard to guess what kind of food they serve. Yes, you are right, they served both indonesian and thai food.
BaliThai is located at the third storey of West Mall Shopping Centre. It is a pretty good location, i can say, as its not only near the escalator but also near to the bukit batok mrt station.
First step into the restuarant will gives you a cosy feeling. This is probably due to their soft lighting. You can also get to see artifical wood craved to a unique shape -- this is probably to reflect the culture of thai or indonesian.
I was assigned to be seated near a wall. One look at the wall actually turned me off. Theres alot o dark spots on the wall and it doesnt look like a design to me. Immediately, it give me a feeling that they did not maintain the restuarant well enough.
Taking a look at their offering, makes me realize they actually serve quite normal stuffs. Or should i say, the stuffs thay they are serving can easily be found in other thai restaurant outlets. ha.
The first dish that i had is my ever favorite -- Tahu Telur. This dish is actually done by frying the egg coated bean curds. What is really special about this Tahu Telur is that it is not oily at all!!! Yes, you heard correctly, its not oily even thou the fact that they are fried. ha. Unbelivable right?
Another speciality of this Tahu Telur is that they actually added in floss (guess it should be chicken floss). These floss actually enhance the flavour of the eggs bead curd. With the peanut dark sauce, the taste is fabulous.
Ordered their Pad Thai -- fried thin glass noodles. I simply loved the sour and spicy taste of this dish. One thing i wanted to highlight is that they actually added in a super big fried prawn on top of the pad thai. This came as a surprise to me as you wont find it in other outlets.
Last but not least, i have to try on their dessert -- Tapioca with coconut cream. This dish is pretty disappointing for me as it is neither warm or cold. Yah, it would defintely taste better if the tapioca was put into the fridge before serving.
Their tapioca seems abit hard as well, probably the tapioca they have used is pretty mature. This pulls down the overall result of their dessert.
Overall, this is a pretty decent place to satisfy your thai food craving.
Are you going mad and need a place to 'de-mad' yourself? Check out the big red building along Maxwell Road! Yes! It's the infamous red dot museum. It happens every first weekend of the month - MAAD (Market of Artists and Designers) takes place right inside red dot!
Great stuff they have there! All of the work/project on sale at MAAD are created by the artists and designers! Many cool and unique work can be found at MAAD. The crowd is great fun! You'll sure be greeted by the friendly and fun people at MAAD.
If you're around the area or wants to find a place to de-mad yourself, check out MAAD at red dot museum!
Remember! It happens only first weekend of the month! (Don't go there any of the weekend thinking that MAAD will be taking place k....)
|| Hans Cafe @Harbourfront||
Harbourfront centre is located just outside of harbourfront MRT station. Hans Cafe is situated right at the extreme corner on the ground floor. Well, i could have missed this cafe, if not of their big red signboard. ha. This signboard really caught my attention which eventually lead me to test their food.
What i loved about their menu is that they sell pratically almost anything. They sell anything from chinese hor fun to porridge to western chicken chop to sandwich, pies and cakes. You will definitely find one kind of food that will suit your taste.
I am particularly interested in their set lunch / dinner. With a standard fare, you get to enjoy the following:
1) soup of the day
2) main course
3) dessert.
The portion can defintely fill you up and its worth the price that you are paying for.
Well, perhaps its just after the dinner peak, thus most of the tables were left uncleared. sat down on one of the tables, thinking that the staff will come and clear my table. One minute gone, Ten minutes gone, theres still no sign of anyone who took the initiative to clear my table.
I tried to signal one of the staff to clear my table, but seems like no one even bother to check out on me. In the end, i have to take my dinner between two high stacks of used plates and bowls.
Overall, a definitely good cafe for those budget conscious people. However, be prepared to clear your own table during their manpower shortage period.
|| BreadTalk & Toast Box @Vivocity||
In Singapore, theres quite a few Toast box outlets. The one that i would like to review is located at Vivocity. Vivocity is located just beside of the harbourfront MRT station.
This Toast box outlet is located in a very prominent location --just right at the exit of harbourfront MRT station. ha. Rather difficult to miss this shop.
This shop is created with the look of 50s-60s coffee shop style. Perhaps of its appearance, i have a homely kind of feeling whenever i stepped into the shop.
The atmosphere creates a nice place for you to have your chit chat. However, at times it may be too noisy to have serious talk.
This toast box is unlike the normal bakeries shop. This toast box has something that the rest of the bakeries do not have -- varities.
They have all sorts of breads, from toasted white bread to soft buns to thicktoast. If this is still not able to satisfy your taste buld, you can choose from a even wider variety of bread from its bakery shop next door (*they have innovative names tagged to the breads too).
Beside the different kinds of breads, their have a wide range of fillings to apply on top / between the breads. These fillings range from kaya to peanut butter to pork floss and even otah. Unbeliveable right?
Personally, i loved the peanut butter thicktoast. Why you may ask? This is because the peanut butter is simply heavenly. ha.
The good thing for ladies is that they will cut up the thicktoast into 9 small square pieces, so that you can eat every single mouth of toast bread more gracefully.
You will definitely be able to find the type of bread that you like from its wide variety of breads.
Fear not, if you do not feel like eating bread today.
They have many other alternatives like nasi lemak or even mee siam. All these are also hot item for the customers there.
