If you enjoy thai food yet do not want to fly thousands of KM to thailand, theres always the little thailand in Golden Mile Complex. We settled for Siriwan amidst the many other small diners in the mildly air-conditioned mall because our dearest friend mentioned that they have one of the best Mookata's amongst them all. So we sat at one of the outside the coffeeshop seats and were shortly served the menu by a young looking auntie with funky red hair which looked thai but speak superb mandarin.
She shortly set up the hot plate for us and our Mookata (thai steam boat) stuffs came in a huge plate. For $39 you get a good portion of seafood like squid and medium sized shelled prawns, chicken and pork with pork lard in a small bag, various veg, some pig liver and mushrooms, vermicelli and an egg to fry with.. The set up was fun.. its a dome shaped looking plate with a drain filled with savoury soup surrounding the entire plate. You can choose to grill the ingredients or stuff them inside the soup to get it poached (this is what we did with the egg by the way). The food is yummy, though it makes you shirt smell a little smoky... and i must say got for 2 big eaters...
While we preferred a little more prawns because it tasted so absolutely yummy, mushroom coz the savoury soup made it heavenly and the most unexpected vermicelli like angel's hair was too good immersed in the soup and animal fat to not have an extra serving. We also tried a couple of the other stuffs like the Phad thai which is really spicy and yummy, basil with minced pork was wicked with the tiny chilli bombs, mango salad was tangy and appetizing and we also spotted something extra special... Blood cockle salad which is something i didn't dare to try yet looked curiously yummy. Apparently those who ate it loved it and swear to come by again....
Looks like my weekday get together dinners are gonna be thai food most of the time. For a big eater group of 5 chattering ladies... the bill came up to be $113 which includes everything plus no service charge and gst.... Good deal and loving it... Be sure to be back for more...
We were there on a friday evening because somebody told us we could sushi off the sushi belt for $1.50... EVERYTHING WOR!!! So i sent my trusty Robin off to beat the queue and true enough, he did... but not without some STARE DOWNS and hurtful words of i quote "silly teenager who sat by the fountain and think that was part of the queue", though Robin was angry, we gently motioned the words half whispering in my ears because we are more or less surrounded by a pretty young bunch. So we queued and finally got ourselves a nice table for 4. Thank you for their generosity and not making us wait for a seat for 2.
The place is pretty well organized, space fully made used off and had plenty of tables for groups, space for walking and clearing of tables i must say is rather fast. The belt moves pretty quickly too yet almost always refilled with yummy makis, gunkans and sushis. While we were seated, the friendly staff asked if it was our first time and shyly i said YES!!! So she explained the system and there was a ipad for us to make orders as well, which turned out to be super handy. Who invented this IPAD ordering system must be a genius because it sure cuts down on waiting time and increases staff productivity.
Though Green tea wasn't free flow and was $1.50 for 2 tea bags, we tried the special tea instead, the one with somewhat fried wheat which is a little reddish brown in colour. The selection was good and sashimi pretty fresh though we couldn't help but had to compare with the other $1.50 for EVERYTHING franchise at citylink mall which we find Nihon Mura's a little small at everything. While we could eat till we were about to puke with about 12 plates at the other diner, at Nihon Mura, we had to consume about 16 plates. The portion is smaller here, and stuffs not as good value. The taste is about the same with slightly more selections. We love the fact that we could order from the Ipad Menu, at least there were some service.
No WOW factor, pretty much the regular must eats but is of pretty good value as compared to other sushi chains.$1.50 for everything is good and on top of that, i used the DBS credit card for payment and got free vouchers that gives you one free plate per voucher. Yippie..
Its pretty noisy but cosy and casual. Good leg space on the seats and the pickled ginger tasted yummy. Restaurant is clean and hygienic with sufficient air-conditioning.
It was exciting! Going to a club with no man for a change; "No Man's Land" was the theme of tonight's party, so cute hunks are only allowed in after 10:30pm... Here we are waiting in the queue anxiously with our mid-week blues quenched by the mysterious looking door with some dark staircases that leads to colourful lights and the booming music of Club kyō.
I had to hold my breath... what awes me was not the roomy hanging spaces or the lavish couches not to mention a dedicated wooden dance platform and fanciful DJ spins, yet its the cute looking, well built butlers wearing some really tight skinny jeans with nothing else but a loosely caped vest that simply hung off their well-built, muscular shoulders.... I mean who needs the scrawny men when we have these... beautiful butlers keeping you well oiled with the free flow of bubbly champagne and the sexy red vodka cranberries.
Though its hard to keep my eyes to myself, i started to distract myself with the many other activities happening tonight. One corner I spotted some ladies getting primed up with a glossy whip of manicure and a face makover, while in another corner, some ladies getting their hairs curled by a miraculous looking curling machine. On a closer look, it seemed as though it sucks up the locks of hair and spits them out with a curly tangle which could last till the next wash. So it seems..curly is the new in for this season :)
While i was feeling a little snoozed out by the long queues to these "make me a bombshell" rituals, I spotted some racks of really pretty dresses and decided to bump by to see if anything could make me look slimmer. There it was a beautiful slim cut pale colored dress with floral prints so pretty from the latest collection of theWYLDshop.com, freshly imported from Australia.
While I was trying to figure more about my new found treasure for my already overcrowded wardrobe, something was spinning around me making me dizzy. Apparently, you could take some dance trial classes here from the WEST COAST SWING... its a 2 beat dance move that is easy to catch hold of and is fun coz everybody smiled, laughed and shrilled with joy while they got spun around by these professional looking dancers. Well, they are the only other male around except for the busy butlers as such ladies seemed to have all the attention when dancing with one of these well mannered gentleman swingers. Patience is what we don't see on the dance floor, yet the boys executed them well with their smooth moves and made the amateur ladies thirsty for more.
Feeling sore from the stand, stare and envy sequence of clumsy me in my overgrown stilettos, I was offered a shoulder massage from a friendly auntie that had arms so strong that i swear could break a bone if I ever made her cross, otherwise the massage was a good relaxing experience. Auntie was nice, she soothed my knots away and made me felt as though i was having a massage by the beach on a party night in bali. I came back to reality in a short while hoping to catch myself before i started to snore, i moved right next to the next booth to watch hopeful girls getting their love fortune read by the deep looking fortune teller with her ever handy tarot cards. I swear i could see pools of stirring water in the Master's eyes while light bulbs atop the girl's heads. Some looked troubled after getting read, some ecstatic and some simply just couldn't find the bulb at all.
There's a good choice of snacks and finger food in the menu with an exquisite touch of truffle oil (my fav), however whats better then to have a pretty looking muffin. I found some from Shermainexk who gladly introduced me to try some of her creations. There were elephant cookies which tasted quite so unforgettably buttery and the pretty cupcakes that reminded me of my love for trix cornflakes. A enterprising youthful looking lady that is a legend in bakery, i must say the dainty looking snacks went superbly well with the ever flowing champagne and the extra shot vodka in cranberry.
After countless flutes of champagnes, me and my pals thirst for more and thanks to the 5 free drink coupons that was issued to us, we both had a jar of housepours each. While we were busy getting wasted, the boys were let in and boy do they look yummy.... I was half wondering if its the spirit making its moves or my eyes are getting old... every lady appeared so good looking... I begin to wonder if its the curly hair or the perfect make-up or the sexy moves on the dance floor. Well the party just got started as more and more hopeful men comes spilling in...
and so the night goes on with the music getting hotter and the dance floor crowding up with good looking people while we reassured our girlfriends to come by earlier for the next event, somebody let out a loud Sigh.... "Why does the party only happens on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month!"
Dropped by during the weekend and we were pleasantly surprised by the crowd that greeted us. We were very much lured by the noise and the huge sign boards indicating the event and of course... lots and lots of ladies crowding around booth and comparing items not to mention bargaining prices and chio-ing their friends to buy.
I must say a good selection of goods and some really good buys. We browsed through a booth at the corner with jelly shoes and new with tag fashion wear going as low as $5 a piece. Nail stickers 6 for $10 with free trial and tom's look alike canvas casuals for $18 a piece. Also premium items are available like leather shoes and formal male fashion by designed locally.
Lots to choose for ladies, preloved items and local design quintessential pieces that I must say are pretty unique. We spotted one travel agent kinda store and also household appliances for sale. The place was crowded though the aircon as cool, yet we felt kinda squashed by the people especially aunties with sweaty armpits with large bags of freebies from the 50s exhibition upstairs trying to grab the last tube of Maybelline Mascara ($6) from my hand. While she waited for me to put it down, I deliberately held on to it while looking puzzled if I decided to or not to buy... just to irritate her...
It was a good bazaar as items are plentiful and well priced, I mean its a clearance, and it kinda meant what it meant. Things were affordable and super value for money... I went home wallet only slightly lighter yet wardrobe more complicated... Nowadays, i couldn't get my ironed clothes out of the wardrobe without it being crumpled.. its just too tight for now...
If you are wondering where to go this evening, then you should just pop by Hood and enjoy some great groovy music with slurps of ice cold draught beer and some great finger food.
Yes, they do serve a good array of english and mandarin music from the various musical eras from many infamous local bands and artist from here. You never really know that neighbour who sounds like she sing's from her bathroom might actually be from one of the famous local bands. Spotting this place is not difficult though the building Bugis could have escalators so tall that one might get acrophobic just by riding it. You could spot the swanky neon "Hood" in italics when you get to level 5. The dark glass walls and temple lookalike top helmed the entire entrance and promised an unforgettable musical and dining experience.
Inside is spacious with plenty of tables with high chairs and even a small stage looking seating area with bean bags for lounging, proper dining tables and a balcony if you need some "fresh air". The stage is equipped for a professional band performance with amps, speakers, mixers, projectors promising a superb musical journey. Air-conditioning is cold but as the heat build up from the many band lovers and piping hot pizzas, it became pretty comfortable.
The food selection is pretty nice, we ordered some chicken wings which prawn paste was savoury and very appetizing while the thin crust hand made pizzas were crispy yet a little too thin in the middle for my liking. Portabello mushroom was served in a pair and looked scrawny though the feta cheese and garlic was enticing, but pub dining is really not that important as many go there for the spirit, the music and the people. The beer portion was good though, a pint of draught beer lasted for only half an hour because it was so icy cold and the mix was almost perfect for easy downing. Yes I must also mention the happy hour deal is just too good to be true at $5 a glass, we could really could have more.
The music was fantastically good, i mean not many places have such a good selection of local bands and mixture of old and new music from various eras... I really hope they do a bollywood night and do songs like Jive Ho, in that way i can bring my inflatable coconut tree :)
The location was pretty central and grabbing a cab home is easy and if you would like some shopping the mall at the lower floors can ease that shopping bug itch. While the food takes a pretty long time to arrive yet its an excuse for us to order more beer. Food was yummy yet we always wished bigger portions. Price is average and ambience fabulous. Its not one of the hippest places yet extremely localized with a Singaporean Character. One of its kind i must say and I feel I'm home when I'm there... its a little funny, this feeling inside.... Service was good, glasses was promptly cleared and place clean and no sticky floors or chilli sauce stained tables. The music.... i can rattle on day and night.. so please experience that yourself.. hop in one of these days.... and after i ordered all the food i regretted not ordering the hot dawgs which the next table is having.. it looked sooooooo Guddd!
