Yet another food expedition, this time with my colleagues again to Kluang Station at One Utama, Bandar Utama. I was first attracted by this corner lot eatery during one of my shopping binge, when I noticed their interesting design and theme. The whole restaurant is designed to look like a kopitiam at the Kluang Railway Station in Johor. In fact, the whole wall is full of huge photos of the original kopitiam. And apparently most of the recipes there are from one of the owners' mum.

Expected to encounter traffic jam and problem finding a parking spot, but surprisingly the journey from office only took approximately 12 minutes, and another 5 minutes for the parking.

And when we reached the restaurant, we were surprised to see that it's half-empty. It means no queue for table and shorter waiting time for our food too!

I ordered their Hainanese Chicken Chop (RM9.90), served with some green peas, beans, fries and topped with mushroom sauce. I can tell you I really love this one, especially with the portion so big. Definitely a must try if you visit this eatery. I also ordered their Special Fried Chicken (RM4.50), which I felt its very tasty too. It is not just like those normal fried chicken. This one is crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside and the marinade taste is very nice.

Kevin ordered Nasi Ayam Goreng (RM7.90) which is very similar to Nasi Lemak, despite just eaten one in the morning. He thought it was so so only, nothing really special, although I must mention that their portion is pretty generous.

Rachel decided to try their Nasi Ayam Masak Merah (RM7.90) instead, having tried their Chicken Chop before. Well, their version is not exactly the usual kind of Ayam Masak Merah that we know. But nevertheless, it tastes quite good, judging by how Rachel walloped the whole chicken leg!

They serves those drinks that we can usually get at a kopitiam, such as Teh Ais, Teh O Ais Limau, Milo, Kopi. Besides that they do offer drinks like fruit juice and soft drinks. Rachel ordered Pineapple Drink (RM3.50), and she commented that it was nice. Okaaaaay.....

The service there is very good I reckon. They have more than enough number of waiters, and they won't show you faces when you requests them for something. Pricewise, I thought it is very reasonable due to their large portion and their type of restaurant. Good food, good service, reasonable price, interesting deco and fun companions...can you ask for more?

P/S: Oh be warned, DO NOT try their Kluang Mee Siam (RM4.90)! It is so bland (no meat at all) and tasted so ordinary that I rather buy 'em from those aunties on the roadside for only RM1!

Wanted to pay a visit to this place for quite some time, but were always put off by either parking problem or the lack of time. But anyway, I suggested this place to my friends, as I want someplace more cozy instead of mamak or bak kut teh.

Service was pretty fast & efficient, even though the look on the old supervisor seemed abit "chuen". Their menu is pretty extensive, so choosing your food might be a lengthy affair.

      The deco & ambience:

The deco/design of the place is pretty nice. Very cosy, and certain tables are partitioned, so you'll get some degree of privacy.

      The noodles:

For a restaurant with a name like "One Noodle", their noodle better be good. And true enough, the noodle/ramen there is nice and full of flavour. Most of the ramen (or La Mein as One Noodle called it) cost around RM10, except for few that comes with seafood which costs RM13.80.

As you can see from the pictures, Sandy's and Kevin's ramen looks pretty dull, with minimal ingredients with the ramen. I tried Sandy's dumpling and it tasted quite good. My own's Tomyam Seafood Ramen fared a bit better IMHO. Plenty of seafood included, and it tasted quite fresh..although it would be much better if the prawns come without the shell! The tomyam soup itself its nice, but could have been better if its spicier.

      The drinks:

Nothing much to blog about, as 4 of us only tried the more usual drinks. Sandy ordered their Apple Lemon Green Tea, Kevin with his Lemon Green Tea, and yours truly with just Green Tea. Should have order something more special like their Honey Watercress Tea or Lotus Root Red Dates Tea, both have received rave reviews by other bloggers. Both mine and Sandy's drinks were disappointing, so avoid them ya.

This time, my makan adventure goes to Pekan Ampang, the Ground Zero of all Yong Tau Foo in the planet.

There's a reason of us driving all the way to the traffic-congested Pekan Ampang for Yong Tau Foo, even though we can get 'em in KL itself. Kenneth Kwan and his wife Hui Wen were in town, coming from Singapore for their church's annual camp, which was held at Times Square (see how loaded Singaporean churches are!?).

So instead of bringing them to posh restaurant in KL, we thought of bringing them to eat something more locally-authentic (and because we can't afford to treat them at posh restaurants ).

There are 3 famous restaurants that offer original Yong Tau Foo, and all of them are just next to each other. They are Foong Foong (supposedly the nicest), Ochard View and the Ampang Homeland (a distant third).

The place would be REALLY crowded during weekends, so go early to avoid long waiting time for table. We went for Orchard View because Foong Foong was filled to the brim, and even Orchard View was 95% filled.

Once we got the table and ordered, the food did come fairly quickly. I couldn't remember my last visit prior to that day, but I do remember the taste. And so glad to know that the taste is still as great as ever. And my favourite fried sui kow (dumpling) is simply wonderful, we sapu-ed all 30 pieces of the sui kow.

And to my surprise, the price is considerably cheap. I think each piece costs only RM0.50 or RM0.60 (couldn't remember clearly, sorry). Less tasty ones in KL actually cost more, with an average price of RM0.70 or RM0.80, albeit with a more comfortable settings (air-cond etc.).

Yea, I think the Singaporeans were pretty satisfied with our "loot" that day. Although they looked so puzzled when they found out that we don't eat 'em with noodles as they do. So for great taste and great time with friends, faster head straight to traffic crawl in Pekan Ampang!!

Its not easy to find pork to eat in Petaling Jaya nowadays, but we won't allow anything to stop us from our sacred rights of eating pork. I recalled seeing one BKT shop somewhere near Restoran OK, so I drove to that side of SS2 immediately (it was already 12:50pm). After thanking God for blessing us with a parking spot (can be a pain in the arse in this neighbourhood), we finally smelt BKT!!

The restaurant was already crowded by the time we reached there. But fortunately we still managed to get a table. The first thing that you'll see when you walk into the restaurant is the small "kitchen" area where a Burmese/Thai worker is cutting up those pork. *slurp*

The menu is put up high on the wall, with the prices there as well. So chances of kena rip-off is basically down to zero, unless you choose to order their "Chiu Pai" (signature) fish. For the fish, they just wrote this: MARKET PRICE.

After doing some recon (spying) at other tables, we decided to go with the flow. One dish very notable is their mentioned Signature Fish, which I can see on almost every tables there. The friendly lady boss also recommended their Emperor Chicken, and we of course also ordered the craved bak kut teh.

It didn't take them long before they start serving the dishes. We probably waited for just 5 minutes? The first to arrive is the bak kut teh (RM15 for 2 pax). We asked for leaner meat, and no intestines (the girls don't eat 'em..grrr ).

The meat itself is pretty good, with just the right taste. Usually I'm not so keen on leaner meats because some are pretty hard and chewy. But the lean meat here is firm enough but not too hard. But the soup is a tad too disappointing in my opinion. Its slightly too mild, with a little hint of herbal flavour. Those that prefers strong herbal taste might wanna give this one a miss.

Being a chicken-lover, I was looking forward for their Emperor Chicken (RM15). When it came to our table, I thought it looks fabulous.

This dish is not big actually, with only a whole leg and 2 chicken legs. With a price tag of RM15, I was expecting bigger portion actually. The chicken tasted very good and the texture is just right. The herbal soup (broth) goes very well with the steamed rice too. Well I've definitely tasted better Emperor Chicken, but won't mind eating it here again.

Then finally the Signature Fish (RM20) came. I'm not very good with fishes, so I can't tell you the name and the name of the style of cooking. But I can tell its more bones than meat. The taste was nice, but just felt abit ripped off as the amount of meat certainly can't justify the RM20 price. Not worth ordering if you ask me.

Although we actually ordered for 4 person (one of them FFK), but 3 of us managed to finish off everything. Everything except for:

          CHICKEN LEGS!!!!

Just happened that none of us 3 like 'em, though some of you would kill for it!

The final bill for this meal was RM59 for 3 of us. Definitely too pricey for a weekday lunch, and for poor corporate slaves like me. Well I might come back for their chicken, and maybe BKT too if Mungo Jerry is not going to open anymore during lunchtime. But the fish? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO...........

            5. Hayn’s Pizzeria
               08 Jun 2007 at 7:16 pm
The premise is quite brightly lit, and the deco and design are nicely done, very refreshing.

The deco on the wall does remind me abit of Izzi Pizza, and Boost Juice outlets in Australia.

The pizza menu here is pretty extensive, although the same can't be say of their non-pizza choices. And their prices for the pizzas are surprisingly affordable too, considering their upclass location and type of restaurant.

While waiting for our food, I took the liberty to roam around the restaurant to snap pictures. They have a open kitchen right in front, so I managed to took some shots of them making the pizzas.

One of the finished product. Yummm.....

The drinks came after a short wait. Su told us she absolutely love her Iced Lemon Tea (RM3.90 ), as the taste of the tea is still fragrant, with the right amount of lemon and syrup added in. My Ice Blended Mocha (RM6.00 ) fared pretty good too. Didn't bite into any chunky ice as I sometimes experienced at Starbucks. Didn't take any picture of Rachel's very ordinary Sprite (RM2.80 ), as well as Kevin's mega ordinary "Sky Juice" (FOC)!

The first main meal that arrived was the Hayn's Spicy Pasta (RM12.90 ), recommended by the gentle waiter that served us. And true to his words, this pasta is simply delicious! The spicy sauce is wonderful, with its creamy texture and aromatic butter taste to it as well. Instantly reminded me of some of the yummy crabs that I've tasted before. Although the portion is not big, they are pretty generous with the mussels, chicken, prawns and calamari added in. This is surely a must-order if you decided to try this restaurant out.

And shortly after, the much anticipated pizzas started being served to us. First to come, the Pizza Banana (RM9.50 ) which earlier I was prettty reluctant to order coz I find it difficult to associate pizza with banana. Kakaka..but after some persuasion from my colleagues, we decided to try it out. And boy how glad we were after taking a bite of it. The combination of the sweet bananas, chocolate sauce and the tomato sauce somehow gel together perfectly. Well some of the hardcore conservative pizza-lovers out there might be yelling "blasphemy!" by now, me and my colleagues simply in sugar heaven and lovin' it. Just don't treat it as a usual pizza, and you will be able to enjoy the unique taste of this exotic pizza. Our favourite pizza of the day, without a doubt.

The next two pizzas are yummy as well, although they are nowhere as unique and exotic as the Pizza Banana. The Pizza Italia (RM10.50 ) is basically made up of tunas, onions, pepperonis, with tomato sauce. Kinda nice but those that are turned off by fishy taste should choose to avoid this. And the Pizza Marinara (RM13.00 ) is the usual fare that you can find at any other pizzerias.

All pizzas here are of Crispy Crust, just like how we prefer it to be, so no complains here.

And you know they know what they are doing when you see chilli flakes and the amazing Tabasco pepper sauce. Its just not right eating pizzas without any of these, and I was appalled when I found out that they no longer offer that at Pizza Hut. Grrr...

Although our stomachs were going to explode after walloping all the pizzas, we (except for the only one with a respectable self-control, Su) committed the sin of gluttony by ordering their gelatos! There are a total of 7 flavours available here.

Rachel ordered a single scoop of Tiramisu (RM5.90 ), I had a single scoop of Nockies (Cookies n Cream) and the fat Kevin got himself double scoops of Nockies & Mint (RM7.90). The gelatos here are of the Lecka Lecka's franchise, so those that have tasted it would know how it would fare. If you are a gelato lover, you can go for the Triple Scoop (RM9.90 ) for more value-for-money.

One thing that I must mention is the service at Hayn's is simply 5 stars! The waiters are very gentle, polite and helpful. When one of the waiter brought a pizza to our table, he accidentally touched my straw. Without being prompt, he quickly replaced the straw with a new one. He also patiently answered our queries and gave us suggestions. I'm not being exaggerating if I tell you I will go back to Hayn's because of their service alone!

And oh yea, the owner was there during our visit. He seems very friendly to some of the customers there, although he didn't come to attend to us. Maybe he's only warm to his frequent customers? Anyway, I found out he's (his name is Arne Hayn) a Scandinavian and not Italian as we suspected.

Please go and try out their delicious food especially the Pizza Banana and the Hayn's Spicy Pasta. I bet most of you would love it.
