My friend got one of their rebate vouchers where we had to spend $100 before we can use the voucher of $20. So we decide to go and try, hoping that maybe can make use of the voucher. But in the end, we only spend $70 for 5 person, so the voucher was not used. And this time, we got another $70 worth of rebate voucher, in denominations of $10 (i.e. spend $50 the next time and we could use one voucher of $10). If only they had given the $10 denominations during my friend’s first visit!!

We order the $6 noodles to share: Pu Tien Lor Mee, Fried Hing Hwa Bee Hoon, Fried Rice Cake. We also order the Steamed Cold Pork Belly with Garlic (and we thought it was nice, without much strong taste of garlic), Spinach with Salted Egg and Century Egg in Supreme Stock (the salted egg with the stock made this a not very salty but very good tasty wet dish to go with rice…..), Deep Fried Duck with Yam (we can’t feel much duck taste, but with the duck as fillings, it reduce the sickness that some people can feel from eating a whole mouthful of yam paste).

The 6 dishes was more than enough for us 5 ladies, and we couldn’t take any dessert. But of course, the non-attractiveness of the dessert also kind of stop us from ordering. At least not attractive to 5 young ladies.

For the service, initially acceptable, until we ask for the bill and we had to call twice before finally the bill came. They took so long and could only explain that because they had a long queue. I just don’t understand why, since our orders are already in the system and they just need to generate the bill and swipe my card. I bet it is because they need to issue the rebate vouchers which probably need someone to verify.

In case you want buffet, they have the 3pm to 5pm buffet too. But going by the menu (no seafood) and comparing to our price above, I think you wouldn’t get too much cheaper if you are not a big eater. It still works to $67 for 5 pax non-weekend buffet.

One thing to note for Pu Tien, if you want water instead of tea, it is still chargeable (free-flow). Unless you pay for the tea (free-flow), then you will get water FOC too.

For $9.90 , it’s quite worth it for a neighbourhood buffet breakfast. It includes free-flow of orange juice. And the staff continuously serves out the food.

There’s different type of pastry, including those with fillings. There’s the baked tomato for those who want some vegi to go with breakfast. There’s the baked beans to give some wetness to your lots-of-pastry breakfast.

On the negative side, probably will be that the food serving area is a bit cramp and that the scrambled eggs is not as nice as those from McDonalds. It’s not cooked long enough (don’t worry, it is cooked) and hence a bit soft, making excessive consumption not advisable as you will easily get a bit sick of it (don’t worry, not “get sick from it”) (maybe that’s the trick, taste alright at the start so you will say “let’s come back again”, but you won’t eat too much of it when you are full).

Its speciality (Cross Bridge Vermicelli) attracted me to the restaurant and the price ($6.80 to $10.80 for the different range of vermicelli) pulled me in. However, after finishing the meal, it does seems that it is not that cheap after all.

For 4 of us, we paid $31.99 after 10% credit card discount and there was only a 10% service charge levied (no GST). But this was without drinks. If we had order drinks, it could probably set us back by another $15. Furthermore, although it seems that the vermicelli was quite worth (with around 10 to 15 dishes by the side, to add into the soup with the vermicelli), it is actually not filling. Most of the dishes are garnishing or to add flavor to the soup. The number of meat dish depends on which price range you ordered, around 1 to 4 dishes. And even each meat dish has only pathetic 2 to 3 thin slices of pork/ham/fish and the egg dish is 2 eggs, but is quail eggs. I would rather they give me a choice of “add $X for a plate of XX” etc.

Although the legend is that the soup would still be hot with the oil covering over it, the restaurant maintain the temperature of the soup quite well: not too hot (to burn my tongue) or too cold (and not be able to able to “cook” my quail eggs).

It’s probably a good choice if you prefer a light dinner with dessert to follow. Else, you will sure be grumbling away that you are still hungry.

And maybe to add a bit of fun to your dinner, they will serve you a tray with the soup, vermicelli and side dishes all in separate dishes/bowl on the tray. You are supposed to pour the dry vermicelli (probably already cooked) and all the side dishes into the soup.

They also have other rice and noodles dishes.

When it comes to crab, I always choose No Signboard, for its super-big claws. I ever had one black-pepper crab where the biggest claw was around 4 inch long or more. A pity that the black-pepper taste didn’t really get to the meat (that was another outlet, not this), either due to the size and style (black pepper) or due to the skill of the chef (maybe he didn’t crack the claw enough for the taste to get to the meat while cooking.

Bearing this in mind, we choose chilli crab and butter crab this time. The chilli crab was hot, but still manageable with the 1 to 2 glass of lime juice. The butter crab (dry style) was a bit oily but simply smell too fragrant for us to stay away. The drunken prawns is served in soup full of ginseng and also shaoxing wine taste. The pork ribs is served in aluminium foil and soft enough. We also have the lobster salad (this is the other must-have for us, other than the crab) (that’s around $80 a kg which give us around $30 plus for our plate).

Not too sure about the other outlets, but this outlet always provide us a dessert when we request for the bill. For the last time we went, is ice jelly with soursop.

When I first saw it, I thought it was just cream puff with various toppings, just like the many donuts shops outside.

But when I bite it, it is really really chewy. And yet, because it has the cream puff alike outer layer, it wouldn't be as sickening even if you take a few more, as compared to donuts. [ The chewy layer is a thin layer in between the cream puff alike outer layer and the cream inside. I wonder what that is made of.

We had the ones from the Sweet Menu, where its those traditional cream puff (with the outer layer being chewy) with cream inside and additional flavourings on top. Its a just-nice combination where the cream would be neutralised by the sweet toppings (or the other way round). So, you get a just-right tea-time pastry.
