They have the biggest market share and whenever they decide on a rise, the others will follow suit. Now, there is this diesel surcharge!!
But what to do, you need to take taxi and the taxi driver needs to earn a living, still have to pay, but probably have to think before taking a cab. Hopefully, lower demand, the supply of taxis will stabilise (i.e. not any guy just join as taxi driver), thus the taxi drivers will still be able to earn a decent income.
But I simply refuse to call the Comfort taxi hotline. They keep saying their drivers have no right to reject bookings, but I still see "on call" taxis running all over CBD and yet I can't get a taxi!!!!
And, I don't know if it is bacause they have changed their system, now I can't get onto the automated line and always have to wait for the operator. AND the operator also busy and cannot take my call!!!! Waste my $ making the call and listen to music!!!
Now, I only call SMRT taxi hotline as it is automated line and I usually get picked by a driver within a minute, although Thursday and Fridays nights may be hard to get picked (I work in CBD)
Located in CBD with so many office towers nearby, they have a very big group of regular patrons. And these patrons often go for take-away as the shop space is simply quite limited. The same applies to the Raffles Place outlet. There is often around 3-5 in the queue for this outlet and 5-10 for the Raffles Place outlet, during the lunch peak.
My usual soups are the Beef Goulash (when I feel I need more Iron) and Tokyo Chicken Stew (for this is the only clear soup in their standard menu). But I am thinking of trying out their Meatless Minestrone which has macaroni in it.
I often go for a set meal, which comes with a half-size salad/sandwich/wrap and a drink/chips/apple. The chips usually goes to a corner for a teabreak-enjoyment. But the Asian Tofu / Thai Chicken Vermicilli salad is very nice after the soup, especially that they comes with a cup of sauce (should be Thai sweet&sour sauce, more sour version) for you to pour over the veg. The soup comes with a bread, where they have a lot of choices which you can choose.... and they taste so nice even if eaten alone.
Oh, they deliver at a charge of $3 for before 7.30pm deliveries. Else, you can call them to ask them to pre-pack your takeaway orders (for dinner, close at 9pm).
And another thing is that they have take-home packs where you can keep for a week or so in the fridge (wonder if those will contain more "ingredients" to keep it fresh for a period??).
This outlet is situated at the perfect location, where it is often full for lunch, with all the foreign banks and an audit firm just conveniently located at the building above. But for dinner, the "patrons" are often its own staff.....
I haven't being to the outlet itself for lunch YET. But we had a chance to order takeaway for dinner. I like their dinner service in that they offer me 2 options: delivery with no extra charge, just the normal service charge; takeaway with service charge waived. And the best for delivery/takeaway is that you can place order once, for items coming from both the Chopsticks' menu and The Asian Kitchen (at Republic Plaza) menu. The guy on the phone will help you liase with the other branch to ensure you get all items delivered in one trip (although if I choose takeaway, I got to go to 2 outlets to pickup).
Maybe because we got a fair bit of orders (compared to the almost-dead restaurant), or that it was the restaurant manager/supervisor who took our order, our order came out well despite us being "nasty" to ask that the receipt be individualised and payment (by credit card) be made separately... How many times did he swipe my card, but did not give me black face?
They were also thoughtful to pack my soup-based noodles with separate containers for the dry noodles and for the soup, without any extra charge for the containers.
But I guess it is part of their trick to make you order the sides, we thought the noodles or soup (in the range of $6 to $9) does not seem filling.
PS: I like the Red Bean Milk Tea, which I suspect is a The-Asian-Kitchen-creation, although I know of another not-too-old restaurant which offers this drink.
Someone was asking me if this place is good, for he is attracted by the 99cents sushi. But knowing him (cares so much about hygience), I told him he wouldn't like it: the sushi are stacked on top of each other and the shape looks like some little kid was playing with the sushi (so badly made). And though "cheap" by per unit pricing, each piece of sushi is relatively smaller than outside, which end up not as worth as you would have thought.
But as to whether I will go again, it is still Yes for the moment, if I happen to have a craving for Jap non-sushi-food is going with family to the area: they have the udons, dons, yakitori, which on the overall still fairly priced and taste good.
But given the location (swimming pool where a lot of kids go for swimming lessons on weekends) and the badly designed store layout (the walkway surrounding the central sushi counter is so narrow), you just have to walk slowly as you move around choosing / picking up your food.
We went during Friday lunch. Everyone was happy with the food and the TV (diving competition going on), except with the menu and the service staff.
One of us order a pasta and ask if it is tomato based like the picture shown. The eventual dish turn out to be cream based. And our reply gotten was that we have to specify for tomato based, else it will be cream based. (???). When asked if we can change it (since my friend did specify tomato based), the service staff say will have to check and went back with the pasta. When he came back, we are told of no-exchange. Ok, my friend starts poking at the hateful cream based pasta and the waitress who took her order came back and say can change for her, if she insist. In the end, my friend choose not to change as she did not want to wait for another dish to be cooked, but with unhappiness bottled up.
For me, I was told by a friend that Harry's Fish & Chips is nice and I thought the picture in the menu fits my craving for the day. But the eventual dish turn out totally different: not because of the chef's failure, but because the fish&chips-lookalike picture was meant for another fish dish (can't remember was it "fillet" or what) which another friend ordered. Luckily the non-fish&chips-lookalike still taste good with spice.
They know that pictures on the menu can make people feel like eating, but they forgot to put names to the pictures or at least put the pictures at the right place.
When we are making payment, we asked about credit card discounts, and was told that Citibank offers 10% discount. But again, we got a 180 degrees change in answer, the discount does not apply for "Happy Hour" (lunch time is happy hour???).
Luckily there is no service charge and no GST (rather strange for a chain restaurant), hence we-pay-what-we-saw per the menu price.
Ok, all the bad words, still have something good: the clam pasta came with a lot (a lot!) of clams.
