Zhou’s Kitchen - 周 (Zhou) is the family name of Andrew Tjioe, Tung Lok Group’s Founder and Executive Chairman and Zhou’s Kitchen is a welcome shift from the high end Tung Lok restaurant to a casual Chinese dining restaurant that caters to the palates and pockets of diners from all walks of life.

The décor is a mixed of Eastern influence of bamboos and jade and Western influence of clean and bright modern lighting.

Each table was served with delightful Prawn Crackers as we waited for our first dish - Young Sweet Potato Leaves Sautéed with Sambal Belachan. A straightforward dish that is a close substitute to Sambal Kang Kong, some might dislike the subtle bitter aftertaste.

The Xing Hua Traditional Homemade Noodle is a bowl of Udon-like noodles served in slightly gluey gravy. The gravy is light on the palate but noodles tend to be starchy towards the end.

The Xing Hua Dumplings served in a bowl of MSG-laden soup was disappointing. The dumpling tasted of strong pork smell and the skin was not the best I have tasted.

The best dish was the Grandma's Braised Pork with Toufu that was doled out in a claypot. Pork was soft and flavoured but a pity that the toufu was not braised along with it, as it was hard and hardly soaked in the gravy.

Secret Recipe, a lifestyle café chain that has become a household name following its debut in Malaysia since 1997. It has since successfully established its brand name in Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand.

The Lamb Stew served with Mashed Potatoes is one of their signatured dishes. The meat was very soft and yielding that a lightest tug of the fork will cause the meat to be easily separated from its bone. However, the meat could be better infused with the gravy and the mashed potatoes could be slightly salted for better flavour - we find it slightly cold and hard as well.

The Pan Grill, or Grilled Dory Laden with Lobster Gravy and served with Fries was the other main we sampled. On its own, the lobster gravy is strong with lobster tang, but we find the pairing with the fish a slight mismatch. Dory being a fresh-water fish also comes with a slight muddy taste.

The highlight of Secret Recipe belongs to its award-winning Chocolate Banana Cake. Crowned as the "Most Original Chocolate Cake" award winner in Malaysia 1999, the cake is pretty addictive. Loads of Thick Banana Slices on a Bed of Chocolate Cream with Chocolate Cake, this cake doesn’t come across as chocolaty as Awfully Chocolate’s version, and would bring a nice finale to a meal, however, we would prefer the cake to be slightly more moist.

    1443. Derma RX

    Category: Skin Care
    Nicnic Nicnic says:

Derma-RX got introduced to me after my trauma in Whoo and O Hui experience saying that I have 30 year old skin. Just trying to get some assurance, I actually went to see a skin doctor to check if I really have THAT BAD skin.

But anyway, the doctor introduced me this brand saying that it can only be purchased through selected clinics and are not available off shelves. I did hear good comments about this brand before so I decided its better to believe a doctor instead of a sales girl.

The stuff I bought (acccumulative) are: 1. Milk Cleanser (forgot the price) 2. Foaming Cleanser ($38) 3. Comedone Formula (abt $120) 4. Rejuvenator ($170) 5. Liposomal Sunscreen (abt $60)

Milk Cleanser: Gentle on the skin, but unable to remove stronger makeup like waterproof mascara. I think i can find better alternatives.

Foaming Cleanser: Get my skin thoroughly cleansed, without tight feeling. Not too foamy with slight fragrance. I quite like it even though its pretty expensive for a 150ml bottle. It just makes my skin looks very clear and giving a slight glow after every wash.

Comedone Formula: It does removes my blackheads but stupid me used it everyday and got my nose peeling alot! I only use it on alternate days now and in minimal amount. Its supposed to dry up the pimples and black/whiteheads. since it got my skin peeling, i think the drying up part is actually working? but one thing for sure is that after switching to alternate days, my nose stopped peeling and i cant seem to squeeze any blackheads out anymore. however, pores remains visible :(

Rejuvenator: Does moisturize my skin well initially but the layer of moisturizer gets absorbed very quickly and I'll need to apply another layer again when in aircon room. Not too sure if thats a good point but id expect better results from a $170 moisturizer, will not buy again.

Liposomal Sunscreen: Highly recommended as its waterproof, (i use it when i go diving and i do not get sun burnt at the end of the day) and can last up to 8 hours guaranteed. I do not know how true is the 8 hours part but given the fact that i do not need to re-apply after every 4 hours (like normal sunblock) and yet not get sun burnt under the scorching hot sun, im actually very happy with the product. furthermore, its not very thick and not too white and gets blended easily into the skin when you apply just the sunscreen itself.

In all, Id think that Derma-RX products are quite good but its definitely abit costly. Id recommend it to people with skin problems to solve (acne, pigmentations etc), instead of people who already have clear skin but wanna further improve on it.

The sunscreen, however, is my favourite as the price is comparable to brands like estee lauder and yet results are definitely better than most other brands. :)

    1444. Hainan Kor

Better off at a hawker centre

So there is this "trend" of putting iconic local dishes into a cafe or restaurant setting. Hainan Kor is one of these places.

Unfortunately, for a place that is supposed to have Hainanese Chicken Rice for its signature dish, the chicken was over-cooked, tough and rather dry, unlike the elusive, but much talked about perfection of tender juicy meat with glistening, slippery skin. While the rice was quite decent and warrants credits to the chef, I have to say the chicken rice dish as a whole is likely to disappoint many here.

Other dishes like the fish maw soup and vegetables with oyster sauce were ok, though nothing much to shout about. Still, I personally liked the soup for being simple, where light taste of the broth from cooking the chicken is clearly recognised.

The marked up pricing here is probably not going to make it a popular choice among the residents here since it is in close proximity to a kopi tiam and a hawker centre, where one can get more variety and better value.

    1445. White Dog Cafe

The opening of Vivo City has seen many new restaurants/cafes popping up to capitalize on the crowds that throng Vivo City daily. One such new restaurant/cafe is White Dog Cafe.

Located just a few doors away from the much talked about Kim Gary, White Dog Cafe hosts its own steady stream of customers in its simple yet cosy interior with a view of Sentosa to boot. The menu is interestingly done up to mimic the spots of the Dalmatian. Other than that, nothing else seems to suggest why the outfit is named White Dog Cafe.

Soup of the day - This was plain lousy. The soup was way too salty and tasted like cabbage soup with some small balls of meat in it. The accompanying garlic bread was equally bad, coming across as slip shod and bland.

Deep Fried Breaded Beef with Japanese Mayo -
This was recommended to me by the waiter and it sort of blew me away with its quality (this is not a compliment in case you are wondering). The bread coating was way too thick and the beef was tasteless. It was no different from eating deep fried crispy bread. Probably the only thing that was still okay was the rice. Ironical isn't it?

Etoile - My dessert of a specialty cake, the Etoile, which is essentially a dark chocolate cake with chocolate mousse. Sadly, it didn't meet expectations. The outer layer of dark chocolate did look like dark chocolate, but certainly didn't taste like it. I couldn't detect any bitterness or strong chocolate taste for that matter. The chocolate mousse was bland and the cake wasn't spongy. Terribly done if you ask me and I'm very sure the cakes aren't made in house. If they are, its time to change a new pastry chef.

A disappointing lunch for 2 pax cost $28.40. Not really expensive price wise, but factor in the quality of food and you have a no brainer conclusion. I will not be back. I guess that pretty much sums it all up doesn't it?

    See all my pictures here.

    1446. Gramophone (Cathay)

    Nicnic Nicnic says:

actually i prefer gramophone more than HMV. HMV just gives me the feeling its always packed with noisy teenagers shouting at cds of their favourite idols. no offence to HMV supporters out there. but my point is, i do not know much abt HMV coz i do not like to go there, so the things i like about gramophone might be available in HMV and im just a sua ku alright?

ok lets start: actually i only frequent the outlet at the cathay. its a good place to spend time when you're waiting for your movies to start. its clean and welcoming looking. spacious so you dont have to go 'excuse me' all the way. they have wide variety of cds, dvds, vcds etc and i can always find the stuff i want there. you know maybe like some foreign movies that are not available at most places, gramophone is the place that can solve my problem.

their staff are very helpful and can lead me to where i can find my dvds immediately when im just lazy to look for them. furthermore, they always have discounts on dvds which makes it more logical to get a dvd than a vcd as the prices are quite close to each other.

but one thing i find quite weird about gramophone. they give out free membership/vip card when you deposit $300 with them which is refundable after 6months. isnt it like a bank? and the membership is valid as long as you deposit the money with them. which means you can enjoy the privileges of the membership for 20 years if you want, and just get the refund back one day when you're too old to walk :P

but anyway, the card is quite useful too as they give you additional discount on top of sale items and with the card, you can get discount on some concerts.

gramophone is not as atas as that cd shop or as hip as HMV. it just gives me a very comfortable feeling to spend as much time as i want there, and yeah as mentioned i can always find the stuff i want.

so, i highly recommend this place for people who dislike crowds and yet like to take some time to consider before purchasing anything, coz you really dont feel the rush there.

seems like cathay is the favourite cinemas of many people, including me! :)

firstly, they have many ticketing booths at different levels so you dont really see super long queues.

secondly, they have a wide variety of food when compared to other cinemas, even though id have to warn that the food arent exactly very nice. but well, think i just cant expect much from a cinema kitchen yah? but i like the part where you can place an order, go get your seat in the theatre and they'll serve you your food later.

thirdly, its very spacious with comfortable seats. especially the awkward part where you have to go to the restroom during the movie, the spacious part makes it not so awkward anymore. at least you need not worry much abt stepping on others toes.

lastly, its much cleaner when compared to many other cinemas. even the restrooms look welcoming! but i always have this embarrassing problem, which is, on the way out from the ladies back to the main area, the route is pretty confusing i always end up just outside the gents (which they dont have a door) and the guys getting out will be giving me a weird look while i try to hide my face somewhere.

oh yah, do any people agree that the carpark is too challenging for amature drivers, (like me)? :P

A definitely must go restaurant for food lovers :)

attractive and cosy design, good ambience and not too much customers.

it was quite awhile the last time i went there so i couldnt really remember all the details but me and my bf both think that they serve the best mushroom soup in Singapore! (or maybe of those we tried) it was really thick and creamy and delicious!

i ordered the wagyu beef burger with foie gras. i really enjoyed my burger! the beef was tender and somehow i think they toasted the bread slightly, with butter, making the bread rather crispy, and it really goes well with the beef! my bf ate the foie gras as i do not take it, but he said that its not very perfectly done and it tasted abit like pig liver? hah! i do not understand as i do not eat livers so i couldnt really understand what he was talking about.

oh yes, the service indeed took quite long given the fact that there werent much customers at that time. but well, we werent that hungry so its okay as the food compensated for the long wait.

however.... it was quite costly id say. we spent about 70 dollars for 2 person. but well, at least we enjoyed ourselves.

One of my favourite hangout. services are usually fast and portions are definitely not stingy.

cafe cartel serves a wide variety of food, from sirloin steak, beef stew to the more localized version like pan fried macaroni with sambal chilli.

The pan fried macaroni is my favorite dish in cafe cartel. the macaroni is served in al dante style, slightly sweet and spicy, fried with tender chicken meat and some mushrooms. and you can top up $2 for a bigger portion if you're very hungry! and trust me, when you top up $2, it makes alot of difference! haha.

my favorite drink id say shld be the mocha frappe. its blended with some chocolate chips you can taste it, sometimes stuck between your teeth haha. so better be careful about that.

but one drink ill definitely not recommend is their pina colada. the real pina colada should have the coconut milk fragrance with pineapple juice. their pina colada doesnt have the coconut milk taste at all, instead, the milky taste is being substituted by vanilla ice cream. their pina colada is like vanilla ice cream in pineapple juce. so yeah, im pretty disappointed with that when i first ordered it. (well there wasnt a second time anyway)

affordable prices, slightly above average services and food.
but recently they just started to charge service charge :(

Hmm i think my comments about Astons are pretty much similar with Bobo.

Ive heard of much ravings about Astons, and have always seen the long queue whenever i drove past. So one day after work, i decided to bring my family there for dinner.

Surprisingly, I dont have to wait long for my turn (it was abt 630pm). Just about 4 person in front of us, and we were served in about 5-10mins?

But the waiting time to order food is the torturing part. Yep i think they are pretty much short of staff and all the servers just seem so busy walking around and occupied with things they 'cant see' me signalling to them.

i finally got hold of a waitress to take my order when she was serving food to the table beside ours.

Everything was fine, rather filling portion of food. But I really do not see whats so nice about their food. I mean, its okay, but its nothing really fantastic.

For 4 person, we ordered 5 main dishes and the total bill came up to about $100. I guess our bill is slightly more expensive coz we ordered the more expensive stuff like wagyu beef n such, but yeah i guess its pretty cheap when compared to outside.

Conclusion: Average food, room for improvement for service and good prices.
