went there for the earthquake with my friends. as usual the ice cream of swensens were really nice and rich in flavour. there were a lot of flavours to choose from though most of them were more on the sweet side. suitable for people with a sweet tooth.
but this time we were surprised that the manager of the restaurant was really friendly. he told us about the executive set lunch offer available (weekdays between a specific time, you get complimentary desert and drinks for pain courses ordered) in a humorous way. he continued to put a smile on even when we said we do not want it. such good service deserves a thumbs up!
I had a class outing at cafe cartel.. it was a nice place to chill out and we chat there after lunch for about 3 hours. saw quite some students there because the weekday lunch promotion is easy on the pockets for students as well. One can enjoy a drink (peach tea/ coke/sprite/ coffee/tea), soup of the day, main course, and a desert. Of course, you can have free flow of bread which is the unique thing about all cage cartel outlets.
You get to choose from 3 kinds of main course everyday. we went on a thursday so the choices were: Grilled Salmon Fillet in Lemon Buttered Sauce, Shredded Pork With Mushroom Baked Rice and Spicy Chicken of the Mediterranean (this is available throughout the week). Everything costs just $9.50nett, which means no gst and service charge.
Spicy Chicken of the Mediterranean. the largest serving of all 3 meals. nothing exactly special about the sauce and not very spicy. there are some small potatoes which you don’t usually see around. very filling but nothing to shout about.
Grilled Salmon Fillet in Lemon Buttered Sauce. my friends complained that it was too dry. the taste of lemon was light and taste wasnt rich enough.
Shredded Pork With Mushroom Baked Rice . probably the nicest of the 3. the taste was just nice and the cheese wans’t overwhelming.
dessert of the day, custard caramel pudding. sweet and not everyone can accept the taste. a few of my friends didnt even finish it. and the appearance, as it is given to us, makes it looks cheap. they could have scored higher in completing the meal by placing the pudding on a plate or did something to make it more appetizing.
Overall you can get very full for a price of $9.50 at cafe cartel but don’t expect much about the quality..
Hong Shan is one of the stores that sells handmade kueh, and is definitely worth a try since handmade kuah are constantly replaced by machine-manufactures. given that even my old aunties frequent it, it sure scores high on retaining the traditional taste.
i highly recommend the green ang ku kueh! well u cant see them everywhere, compared to the red ones. the fillings of these are coconut, the kind cooked using brown sugar.. though its a bit on the sweet side, the taste is really rich! very different from the conventional peanut kind. 60cents each. thumbs up!
the soon kueh has quite a lot of variety. my mum bought mang guang, jiu cai, yam and zhu soon. she said the zhu soon kind is rather hard to find nowadays. at 80cents each, price is considerably reasonable.
handmade definitely has sth different from mass-made kuehs!
a must try for all who loves teochew pau! the petite size is just right for girls. there are normal size paus that appeal to man too! at the price of 50cents for the mini pau and $1 for the bigger versions, the price is reasonable. well i feel that the taste is just right and the skin not too thick nor thin. lives up to its reputation!
