Perhaps is the massive rain that makes me crave for something hot and spicy. So, when i saw the signage indicating that there's a thai restuarant nearby, my legs start to walk towards that direction almost immediately.
Perhaps it is the structure of the building (very much taller than most of the shopping center), i will need to go through numerous escalator turns before arriving at the restuarant. This do make me feel bit giddy and definitely its not for those who are afraid of height. :) As it is also a relatively new building and some shop spaces are still left as unoccupied or are currently under renovation. This inevitablly makes me think that i am heading towards the wrong direction during my search for the restuarant. Never the less, locating the restuarant can be much more simple if you go by the lift.
"Central thai" is located in the midst of the restuarants alley. Its exterior somehow blend quite well with its surrounding and without the use of any eye-attracting colour, one may easy miss this restuarant. As for its interior, it is quite well lighted and has reasonabley sized table and chairs for its guests to have their meals comfortably.
"Central thai" is currently having a 'one for one' promotion and this includes staple food like curry, rice and noodles. However, beware of some item exclusion that they have. Before we start to order our food, we were then told that for the curry category the 'one for one' promotion is not applicable for yellow curry. As for the noodle category, the 'one for one' promotion is only applicable for 'phad thai'. With these exclusion, it seems like that issn't much variety to choose anymore. :(
Not wanting to waste the 'promotion' and our effort to come up to eight storey, we decided to just settle for few simple dishes. These include the pineapple rice and green curry, which falls under the 'one for one' promotion. At the same time, we also order a plate of vegetables and tom yam soup. The pineapple rice though smells quite fragrant but it has a significant lack of ingredients. Beside the usual peas and corns that i can find in the fried rice, i do not seem to see any pineapple chunks in it. Luckily, there are still some shredded pork floss at the top of the rice, making this dish more presentable.
The green curry is definitely not my cup of tea. Perhaps is the way that it is being cooked, which have a very strong taste of herb, making it very different from the yellow curry. Having ordered a chicken green curry, the number of chicken pieces should be more than any other ingredients as it is deem as the main ingredient. However, we only managed to find few miserable pieces of chicken slices. Of course, this dish would taste better if it was much hotter. Personally, i feel that both the pineapple rice and green curry are not really up to my expectation. I wonder if its due to the 'one for one' promotion?
The other two dishes fare much better with more side ingredients like carrots and mushrooms in the vegetable dish and more obvious fish slices and mushrooms in the tom yam soup. However, i find that the tom yam soup lacks a fragrant smell.
As for their service, i find that they are pretty attentive and fast towards customer response. Take for example, one we are seated, they would immediately serve us with water without us having to remind them. As for the order and bill payment wise, they are equally quick and fast, we would not need to wait for long before all these were settled.
Overall, this is a pretty decent place to have some thai food. Although they do not have much variety in their menu, one can still find the normal thai food available, like phad thai and pineapple rice. As for the price, i find it quite reasonable for a restuarant fare with slightly less than 10 bucks for a phad thai. Of course, with the now promotion of 'one for one' as well as a 10% off for citibank member, you may wish to give this restuarant a try.
Frankly speaking, i am totally unaware of the existence of this restuarant. It was only till the recent promotion of their peking duck and double boilded shark fins, then did i get to know them. Hidden in the pretty quiet mosque street, we did spent quite a fair bit of time before we actually located them. Luckily, the staffs called us and gave us some clear directions, which had indeed shorten our finding time.
The interior restuarant decoration were pretty artistic and the two main colours (red and black) that they have choosen, gave one a mysteric feeling rather than a comfortable feel. We were led through a long passageway before we finally arrive at our table. I believed that the passageway would definitely be nicer when its being lit up at night.
Very plain and wordly menu were being presented to us. Of course, if there are more pictures in the menu, it would definitely be better and easier for us to decide on the food. Finally, we choose the dishes and they are the double boil shark fins, the peking duck, the szechuan roasted chickend as well as the stir fried rice vermicles.
The most impressive dish is definitely the double boiled shark fins. Before tasting this dish, the staffs would do an introduction on this dish. The shark fins were served in a japanese stone pot, which will allow it to remain hot for at least 20 mins. Well, this shark fins is definitely one of the best. Taste wise, it is not too salty and neither is it too milky. Their is absolutely no need for additional vinegar or pepper.
Not only that, there are hugh chunks of shark fins and ham strips to be seen in this dish. Very tasty and worth for the price that we are paying. One interesting factor is that they actually served this dish with the crispy onion roll. When it is dipped into the shark fins soup, it would release some sort of aroma that makes the entire shark fins soup even tastier.
The peking duck tasted not too bad either. Their chef even personally came to slice the peking duck for us. Although the chef looked pretty fierce, the slices that he cut were rather uniform. The crispy skin were dapped into some sauce and together with the cucumber slices, they were being rolled in the egg sheets. The taste of this is simply superb and the cucumber slices seemed to neutralize any strong smell that would linger in our mouth. This has led us to eat more without feeling sick.
As for the szechuan roasted chicken, it seemed rather normal, not extremely hot and in fact, i find it quite acceptable. But, i quite like the thick slices of chicken meat that they use, and they have managed to keep the original 'chicken' flavour in their meat.
Personally, i find their services to be very good. First, they provide complemenary parking, which i feel that it is a blessing especially in that area, as we hardly saw any carparks along the way. In circumstances where one is rushing for time, they also provide vault parking, thus one will need to spend unnecessary time for a empty slot.
Second, the staffs were pretty attentive to our needs. They even have a spare chair for us to put the ladies's handbag, this would avoid them to place their hugh bags on their laps and not able to enjoy their meal comfortablely. They also ensured that our cups are always refilled with warm tea, there is really hardly any chances for us to refilled the drink ourselves. They even took the initiatives to separate the food for us, so as to avoid dirty the customer's hands and minimize the hazzle to divide the food.
Third, the staffs were very polite. When we stepped into the restuarant, they would greet us. When we left the restuarant, they would also greet us. This is really impressive. This is really one of the few restuarants that have staffs that were so well trained and polite.
Overall, i think this restuarant is simply excellent with their good food and their good services. Although it may cost abit more on the expensive side, but i feel it is pretty worth to spend this money here.
Was really wondering what is nice to eat in raffles city when my girlfriend told me that she is craving for xiao long bao. Frankly speaking, i did not recalled any shop selling xiao long bao in raffles city, but since she is craving for this, i decided to search for it.
Was walking round and round raffles city before i found din tai fung tuck in a corner. It was really not situated anywhere prominent and one could easily missed it. We got a seat pretty quick and we started looking through the menu to see whats good to eat. Although most of the food served was pretty similarly to the other outlets, they have one 'small dish' section which i do not seem to have seen it elsewhere before.
There are quite a few dishes in their 'small dish' section, we decided to try out their toufu. We also ordered some noodles and the crab meat xiao long bao. First served was the 'small dish' toufu, i pretty like the silky soft toufu texture. Paired with the salty soys sauce, it managed to give the plain toufu sufficient flavour. However, one thing i do not really like about this dish is that it is not hot at all. I suddenly realize that this dish could have cooked long time ago and thats probably why it was served so fast. Perhaps, i would think twice before i ordered any of their 'small dish' in future.
Next up was the noodles, personnally find their noodles pretty decent. But, i was more interested in their crab meat xiao long bao. Thinking that the xiao long bao would arrive any time, so we ate our noodles very slowly. Then did we expect that after completeing our noodles, the xiao long bao is still not here yet. Having wait for a total of 30 minutues, the xiao long bao finally arrived. Its definitely a long wait.
But i do think this wait is worth. Ok, initially i thought these xiao long bao would consist of entire crab meat in it. But i was wrong, they actually mixed it with some of their pork ingredient. But the taste was still as good. It is still as juicy with the juice hidden inside the xiao long bao and may dripped out anytime. :)
Overall, i do think that their food is pretty decent and of course they managed to inject creative ideas in the ordinary food. Use the crab meat xiao long bao as an example, its definitely a good try. Service wise, i think they could really be better by informing them how long they will required to wait for their dish before hand. It definitely not very good for customer to finish the rest of their food and to realize that they will have to wait longer for one more dish to arrive.
Reason for choosing this location to have our lunch is because my friend have a 50 dollars voucher from this particular restuarant. So, off we proceed to jumbo at indoor stadium.
As it was a weekday noon, there was really not much people patronizing this restuarant. But guess, they would have quite a substaintial number of diners at night. Beside the air conditioned indoor seating, they have a outdoor seating as well. And seating outdoors will give one a very nice sea view. Really would like to try out the al fresco area, but it was raining heavily on that day, so we can only stick to the air condtioned area.
Service was pretty good when we stepped into this restuarant, they would immediately usher us to our seats, and lay the napkins for us. One very special move is that they even lay napkins for our bags. We were really wondering why they did that. But, i guess i pretty like the way they did that, as this would means out bag won't get stain by our food. :P A very thougtful move indeed!
We ordered a set lunch, which according to the staffs will be more worthwhile when considering the number of people we have. There are a total of eight dishes presented in the set meal and the first dish is of course the platter.
Of course, when ever we thought of platter, we would think of the miserablely small portion of food. But i was impressed with the portion of their platter, most are enough for everyone to have a 2nd serving. This platter includes the fried baby squid, jelly fish, duck floss with long beans and scallop yam rings. The best of all will really have to be the scallop yam rings, I simply loved how the yam melt in my mouth when i sink my teeth on to this dish.
How could we have missed the chilli crab when coming to Jumbo? And their chilli crab is big and not only that they have substainial about of meat in them too. This is really a satisfying treat for all of us there. Some of our friends do not really eat chilli but they still find this crab hotness level within their acceptable range. Of course, how can chilli crab comes without man tou? Orignally we all thought that man tou will be very filling, never did we expect that they are actually mini man tou. Small bit sized man tou where one can simply globed up in one mouth. Of course, one serving of man tou is defintely no enough for us.:P
Some of the other dishes that we took includes the seafood soup, the brocoli with seafood, the steamed fish, the mee goreng, honeydew sago as well as my favorite dish salted egg prawns. I really did not know that when mixing two very simple ingredient together would get such a great combination. The prawns tasted very chewy and juicy and when mixed with the bright yellow salted egg, it will give a nice and fragrant taste. Yummy! Of course, the best thing is they actually shelled all the prawns so one would not need shell them personnally.
Overall, this was a good dining experience. The staffs were attentive to our needs and constantly refilling our drink and changing our used plates. Towards billing time, they even suggested us to get the jumbo card which can give us a 20% off the total bill, which will give us more discount than the voucher. Well, i believe these small move of placing customer benefits at the first place can be termed as good customer service.
The first impression of this restuarant seems to be its dark settings. Perhaps, this has to do with the use of black color as its main colour, but somehow it doesn't give me a comfy dining feeling.
Nevertheless, i decided to give them a try. Although their menu looks pretty simple, they have sufficient varieties to fill up one's stomach. Some of the available dishs include thai salads, soups, curries, noodles, desserts, etc.
Decided to try out their green curry chicken, phad thai, tahu telur and their dessert. This was actually my first time taking green curry. Was really expected some werid werid taste but realized it actually tasted pretty similar to those red hot chilli type. The additional coconut milk drizzled on top makes the curry tasted thick and fragrant. If one is to taste the curry alone, it will not give a sick kind of feeling even after three soupful.
However, the chicken slices found in the curry was abit disappointing. The chicken slices tasted bit too soft and soggy. Otherwise, this green curry will be just nice.
Next, the tahu telur was served. Although the tahu telur looks huge, it wasn't hot at all. Frankly speaking, a cold tahu telur is not really that nice after all. However, the sweet peanut sauce does make the whole dish better.
The appearance of the phad thai was pretty good, with beans sprouts and chilli flakes served at each corner, it will give one the flexibility to include what they wish to eat. Not forgetting, the large prawn placed nicely on the top of the dish. Taste wise, the glass noodles tasted just too soft and soggy to my liking. But the prawn taste good and chewy. They even shelved the prawn to make one easier when having this dish.
Lastly, dessert time. Tapioca with coconut nut was the first choice in my thai dessert list. However, was disappointed again when this dessert was served cold. Just how nice it will be if they have steam hot the tapioca before serving?
Service wise, they are pretty alright. However, it will definitely be better if they have paid more attention to little details, such as refueling water for their customer.
