Since we were at 313 Somerset, we trailed the Discovery Walk in search of a dinner location. We saw Oriole Cafe & Bar across the Walk at the Pan Pacific Serviced Suites and decided to check it out.
1) Spicy Calamari ($13), battered squid rings with pickled chili peppers. This was surprisingly yummy. The calamari was done just right, cooked tender without being rubbery. The piquant chili peppers provided a tangy and sweet twist to the usual calamari.
2) Chicken Casserole ($20), with spanish chorizo, smoked paprika and grilled baguette. This is done in the style of a typical Italian chicken cacciatore. Very rustic and hearty.
3) Beef Cheek Tagliatelle ($15), beef cheeks braised in red wine with mushrooms and shallot oil. This was alright, but there were unusual fruity overtones in the sauce, which left a slightly weird aftertaste on the tongue.

This was one of the few restaurants that was open for business by the second day of CNY. Which was why there was a whopping 20% surcharge on the food. However, this was balanced out by the fact that there wasn't any service charge (usually at 10%) or GST (at 7%).
1) Steamed Chickens ($24 each) that was fresh, juicy and succulent. It was great that it wasn't too fatty either. These were packed in very innovative packaging, there were handles on the plastic trays for easy takeaways
2) Rice ($0.60 per bowl), which was blander than Thien Kee's, (I suspect the rice wasn't fried before boiling it in chicken stock) but this balanced out the saltiness of the soy-sesame marinade sauce of the chicken nicely

Generally, the meat dishes at Carousel are done very well. If you are dieting or want to focus on the good stuff only, just head straight to the mains and carving stations at the back. And save some space for the desserts too.
1) Braised Beef with Carrots and Truffle: Must -try
2) Black Pepper Encrusted Duck.: Very good
3) Aglio Olio Spaghetti was cooked upon order and perfectly al dente. Simple and delicious.
4) Chilled Seafood Section with Maine Lobster Claws, Boiled Prawns, Crayfish, Scallops, Mussels and Crabs. These are fresh enough
5) Poached Egg with Smoked Salmon and Ham. I loved the runny, perfectly poached egg
6) Kebab was amazing, full-bodied and nicely spiced through.
7) Sausages were also very good, textured and salty

We headed to Garuda Padang Cuisine for some Indonesian Minangkabau food. Although the mall was packed, we got a table immediately in the bustling restaurant. The restaurant was a stark white colour, gleaming and bright. Very chic interiors, with clean lines and a modern feel. The main counter at the cashier's sets out the expansive array of available dishes. You point and pick out the dishes you want and the servers will bring them to your table.
Overall, Garuda was a hit-and-miss affair. Forgettable is the word I would use to describe the food. The cuisine was also a significantly milder to what I'm used to at my usual Padang cuisine at Kandahar St. .
1) Texas Burger ($22.50), a whopping 250g beef patty (medium done) with Hickory Bbq sauce, smoked bacon, sauteed peppers, sweet onions and melted cheese. This was hearty, robust and absolutely delish, the way real burgers should be.
2) Mac and Cheese ($17.50) and opted for an additional topping of roasted chicken to share. Seah Street Deli does one of the best renditions of this classic American comfort food around.
3) Broadway ($25), a combination of a quarter roasted chicken and half rack baby pork ribs. As usual, we switched the potato wedges with mashed potatoes instead. The tender ribs were nicely glazed with a spiced bbq sauce
4) SSD Fish & Chips ($22), and opted for the chips to be replaced with mashed potatoes as well. Seah Street Deli does a very commendable rendition of mashed potatoes, no instant powder mix here. This was very rustic and hearty, not too whipped, so it retains a chunky texture. The cheese-crusted dory fillet was, as usual, very fresh and flaky
5) Sauteed Mushrooms ($7), assorted shitake with white and brown button mushrooms lightly sauteed with olive oil and aromatic herbs
6) Root Beer Float ($10), a frothy concoction of fizzy root beer with a dollop of vanilla ice-cream on top, yummy.
7) Omelette ($14) with Swiss Cheese ($2.50) and Portobello Mushrooms ($5). This came served with baked beans and 2 pieces of toasted bread. Simple and classic.
