This is one place we frequent when we dine at Ang Mo Kio. This outlet of Ramen Ten has been around for many years, and they've been constant with their food standard and service all these while.
Everytime I go, I'll order the same dish, the same drink and almost 90% of the time, I'll be sitting at the same table too! Ha!
My favorite from the menu is the Super Spicy Ramen that's served with minced chicken and lots of chili padi! When I'm hungry, I'll add $2 to get the big bowl (extra noodles). I'm a fan of spicy food and this one gives me the kick everytime I eat it! And to cool off the spiciness, I'll drink their homemade barley (cold).
Nice place with reasonable pricing and friendly service staff. Of course, I'll be going back again whenever I've got cravings for spicy ramen! :)
Hanabi Restaurant, situated at Bukit Timah Road King's Arcade. We went to this place on Sat for dinner. Read on Yebber's review that there will be a lot of people there so we decided to reserve a table for 3.
When we sat down, the waiter came over and ask us what drinks we want to order when we haven't even open our menu. Turned out its our fault as the buffet comes with complimentary hot or cold Ocha. So we ordered our drinks and sat to look through the menu.
Service was fast and polite. So fast that the moment some one saw my husband took up the menu, he came over and ask us whether we need to order. Not that this was bad. Service crew polite, food served fast and empty plates cleared fast.
Sashimi - I don't eat raw food as I find biting into raw meat very "恐怖“. But even to people like me, the Sashimi looks absolutely fresh and portions given were generously large. My friends who ate this said the meat were succulent and fresh but they ought to put the pieces on cooler or ice to keep the taste there. 2nd portion of the Sashimi ordered were not as nice though. Freshness was still there just that the cuts were not that good. Fish scales can be found.
Tempura - Not that great though served piping hot. We ordered Yasai Tempura and I felt that the vegetables were cooked too throughly and lost their texture. Unagi tempura was not bad with the tempura coating crispy and the Unagi itself soft and sweet. Grilled items - Definitely pre-cooked and re-warmed. Items came out warm and some were cold. Looks dry and uninviting. Grilled items were not too good which can be understood as grilled items take longer to cook. To serve fast, they must be pre-cooked.
Others - We definitely loved the Chiizu Chawanmushi. Though except for a piece of mushroom, there were no other ingredients inside, it was surprising that cheese and eggs blended well together. Not to mention the chewy pieces of cheese at the bottom of the cup.
We also ordered Goma ice-cream (Black Sesame) and Yuzu ice-cream (Jap Lemon?) and Chocolate ice-cream. Both Goma and Yuzu taste heavenly. Especially the Yuzu which is a sorbet ice-cream. Different from other sorbet ice-cream was that it wasn't too watery hence doesn't melt too fast. Pieces of fruits inside the ice-cream and its thick texture makes this item absolutely worthed its price of $4 (per scope)
Total bill for the buffet was $124. Definitely worthed the price.
When we decided to visit this restaurant after choir, we couldn't find a seat and had to wait for 10 mins at 3pm in the afternoon!!
When finally we got our seats, we ordered : Chocolate milk, Pineapple/Mango, Strawberry smoothies named after Disney Princesses, Macaroni and cheese spaghetti and Tomato Pasta.
Chocolate milk was alright. But still, its just normal chocolate milk that HL can do better.Pasta, looks like a big portion. Then again, the size of the dish was small. Sure to say this portion wasn't big enough for my husband. He finished it in 4 mouthfuls and had to add that much cheese to get a flavor out of it.
Macaroni and Cheese ... looks nice but doesn't taste as nice. Too watery and lacking in flavor. Except for macaroni and watery cheese, other ingredients were few. This dish will taste nicer if the amount of ham and pineapple increase.
Menu was limited too~ with only 3 kinds of spaghetti/pasta (one was the pasta of the day). Some kinds of burgers, pizzas and drinks.
Smoothies were what we found tasty there. Interesting blend of fruits such as Mango and Pineapple, healthy and refreshing. Though they can be improved on by crushing the ice to smaller pieces cause as we took our drinks, we found some ice "cubes" at the bottom.
Pizzas were in the shaped of a Mickey's head. Some may find it cute but I just found it unnerving to eat up a Mickey's head. At the cost of $15.90, I don't find it worth the value as the taste of the pizza wasn't that great. Crust too dry and the tomato sauce on it made the pizza salty.
On the whole, I won't recommend this place unless you have a Disney-crazy kid. 3 of us spent a total of $63 and ended with a half full, unsatisfied stomach. Disney Naturally has got good customer service though, the staffs being polite throughout.
However, it should change its ordering system. There were 2 counters there, one at the food area and another where they sell Disney merchandises. We were ushered to the payment counter at the Merchandise area to place order and pay for the food. However, we had to wait for very long as there were people paying for some toys in front of us. Seeing that the queue was slow, the man behind us went to the counter at the food area and placed his order. So in the first place, why were we ushered to the merchandise counter??
I would say I will not step into that place again though its good that they serve healthy meals and have hand washing areas to teach the kids to be healthy and good. But as an adult, I don't really appreciate the cute deco, small seats and confusing system.
Cafe Domus is a hidden treasure which I simply adore! The location makes it special and unique in its own way.
Located along stretch of retro shop houses, the entrance to Cafe Domus may look simple and modern, but what's hidden within is a paradise for friends to chill and great photoshoots too!
I love the simplicity of the design and the clever use of its existing landscape to create a backyard that is so unlike the usual Singapore hangouts.
This is one place to go to chill and catch up with a group of friends.
*Anyone keen to do a photoshoot there? I want to do it!
Having tried small piece of the Unagi Pizza at Pastamania, I simply needed more. Since we were around one outlet, we decided to have our dinner there.
He ordered Aglio Olio Pasta, adding Chicken to it, and I had the Unagi Pizza.
The place was quite packed since it was a weekend. Thus we waited quite awhile for our order to come. Good thing we ordered the set that comes with soup, drinks and toast. Else I would have suffered from hunger due to the wait.
10mins later, the pasta came. Having paid extra for the chicken, it was quite a disappointment. The chicken was tasteless and it didn't go that well with the choice of sauce.
After a long wait, the pizza didn't come. He took his time to eat his pasta, but even so, the pizza didn't come after he finished his pasta! We checked with the manager on duty and he told us the pasta is coming soon. True enough, the next order that came out from the pizza counter was my Unagi Pizza.
Due to the wait, my tummy was already missing the hunger that it initially have. Looking at the pizza infront of me, I didn't quite have the appetite to finish it.
As expected, the pizza was nice and yummy when eaten hot. Taste of the sauce with the unagi and thin crust of pizza makes eating it enjoyable. (It would have been better if we didn't have to wait that long for it.)
What better way to wrap up a meal and combat the cold weather than a bowl of hot Ah Balling soup? $1.50 gets you a bowl of the peanut based dessert with 4 large Tang Yuans or Glutinous Rice Balls with your choice of either Peanut or Sesame filling. The Tang Yuans had a relatively thin yet elastic skin which was not too starchy. Bite into one and the sweet fillings ooze out to greet your teeth. They say goodness comes in small packages and I do not wonder why.
My parents have been buying Hum Chin Pengs from this stall ever since I was a kid (Think 20 years ago). The old man used to be the one doing up the dough and the daughter would fry the Hum Chin Peng . It used to go for 5 cents for 2 pieces, but now times have changed and you have to do your own frying, which can be quite fun and the Hum Chin Pengs go for a dollar for 7 pieces now. Don't worry if you are an idiot at cooking because the lady will ensure that your Hum Chin Pengs turn out just right. After frying, there is the option of coating it in icing sugar. I had a dollar worth of the sweet version (there's the salty version as well) and I must say that the Hum Chin Pengs tasted really good, especially with the icing sugar. Each piece is quite small, so it is quite light and can be taken as a snack. One downside is the oil which is used to fry the Hum Chin Pengs. Last I looked, it was black, owing to the charred pieces of dough. May I add that this is extremely bad for health, but once a while is fine right? ;)
Tian Tian Chicken Rice has got to be one of the better chicken rice stalls in Singapore. The chilli is just great, although a tad spicy for me(I wish I knew the recipe for it). The chicken itself is rather normal, but the rice is fragrant and tasty without being too oily. $3 gets you a huge plate of rice with about 10 sizeable slices of chicken. Talk about cheap and good! There's a very long queue to boot as well so if you are not the kind to wait 30 mins or more for your food, you might just want to visit during the off peak hours like 4-5pm.
Journeyed to Big Splash for lunch one afternoon and chanced upon a newly opened Sushi Tei outlet without the usual crowds that throng its other outlets. Decided to give it a try since the last time I ate at Sushi Tei was probably about 4 years ago at the outlet near my place. As Sushi Tei is relatively well known, I shall just do a quick writeup on it.
Located just opposite The Seafood International Market & Restaurant, Sushi Tei offers a view of the carpark driveway and a glimpse of East Coast Park through its floor to ceiling windows. And the problem with huge glass windows in the afternoon is the heat that penetrates through, which fortunately, was minimal during my visit.
Jo Una Ju - This was essentially unagi with rice. I didn't get to try it but I understand that it was quite salty from the excessive sauce and I guess the substantial leftovers supported that point.
Oyako Don - A staple dish in most Japanese restaurants, the oyako don didn't really impress much with its less than flavourful egg and chicken cubes. But served steaming hot, it was actually still quite palatable especially with its soft sticky rice. And for $8 a serving, it sure beats what sakae sushi's offering hands down.
Golden Roll - Its actually the first time I'm trying something like this and honestly, I liked it quite a fair bit. Prawn pieces sandwiched between rice, just like sushi and layered with mango strips. Sweetness from the prawn and the mango - a very complementing taste. But its $13 for 6 rolls, which is really quite expensive.
Overall an average meal for a not so average pricing, standing at about $44. But having said that, I would definitely prefer dining at Sushi Tei as opposed to Sakae Sushi, which IMHO serves unpalatable food. Service could be friendlier but I like the place for being crowd free - something that would probably change soon given the brand's popularity.
This Kway Chup stall on the second floor of Amoy Food Centre claiming to serve authentic Teochew Kway Chup (not that I actually know how thats supposed to taste like though) piqued my interest greatly and so I got down to giving it a shot.
$6.60 bought me a platter of Pig's Tongue, Pig's Intestine, Hard Boiled Egg, Tau Pok and Fishcake for 2 pax inclusive of 2 bowls of the Kway. I personally found the ingredients too soft from simmering in the huge pot of gravy for too long. The only highlight was the Kway and the accompanying gravy. The Kway had more bite and wasn't as soggy as the normal ones you get outside. The gravy had a slightly burnt taste with a rather sharp tinge of Cinnamon. Something different and worth a try for the novelty factor. Unfortunately, not even the superior Kway and unique gravy is enough to warrant another try.
