We have always been fans of yam paste and with a relative’s recommendations, we decided to drop by 鼎泰豐 for their Steamed Yam Dumplings 芋泥小籠包. The 芋泥小籠包 were pretty small and quaint-looking. 6 for the price of $5.80 . Every 小籠包 was sumptuously filled with yam filling. The yam paste was dense, smooth and not too sweet. In fact, it tasted good on its own, even better without the dumpling skin. The 小籠包 skin wasn’t exactly very compatible with the yam paste filling, rather the conventional steamed bun skin would be a better option. But overall, the 芋泥小籠包 is a commendable effort by 鼎泰豐. Perhaps they should consider introducing Yam Paste into their rather limited dessert menu.

Awfully Chocolate's signature chocolate cake - a simple, moist dark chocolate cake between layers of dark chocolate fudge. The classic series comes in 3 flavours - original, chocolate banana, rum and cherries.

In our opinion, the best of Awfully Chocolate's classic series has got to be the Rum and Cherries. Moist and dense but not overwhelmingly sweet and rich. The rum taste was faint compared to other alcohol-based cakes like Rum Baba, Tiramisu etc, but it was still detectable compared to the monotonous pure chocolate cake. The addition of cherries provided an extra burst of refreshness.

Awfully Chocolate has been around for many years. Yet with the emergence of many chocolate cake shops, it still stands as one of the more popular brands for chocolate cakes.

Priced at $29.60 for a 6 inch cake, we could easily polish off 1 entire cake on our own.

When we were teenagers, Coffee Club has always been one of our favorite haunts; the reason being – its signature Muddy Mudpie!

Muddy Mudpie is made up of 2 thick layers of ice cream on an Oreo cookie base. The top light brown ice cream is coffee flavoured, while the bottom darker brown is chocolate with a tinge of hazelnut flavour. A generous serving of chocolate sauce is drizzled over the mudpie followed by sprinkles of cocoa/Oreo bits. This is not our first time trying Muddy Mudpie, our first experience was many years ago, perhaps around 2006? And over years, we’ve made a few observations.

Firstly, the Muddy Mudpie is gradually decreasing in size. We should to be amazed by the sheer size of the mudpie, now we’re just hoping it doesn’t shrink any further. Secondly, the ice cream appears to be getting softer or perhaps the weather is getting hotter, hence the ice cream appears to melt more quickly. Previously, the mudpie was a bit tougher, had a more chewy and solid texture; at least when we attempt to cut through it using our forks, we faced a bit of resistance. Right now, the texture of the mudpie is too soft and we can cut through it easily. Lastly, though the mudpie is shrinking in size, the price is ever increasing. A muddy mudpie after tax costs $11.18.

Taste wise, the coffee ice cream still packs a strong coffee taste and aroma. The chocolate ice cream had a slight tinge of hazelnut. In general, the ice cream was smooth and strong in flavours. The chocolate sauce went well with the ice cream. However, the cookie base was a major letdown. The cookie base was soft, and not crunchy at all. It was rather clumpy, and had a queer salty taste. There’s not much Oreo taste either. Basically, the cookie base spoiled the entire mudpie.

Hopefully the standard of Coffee Club’s Muddy Mudpie doesn’t deteriorate any further.

One word to sum it all – BAD. We give it 2 thumbs down. The description of the Peanut Butter Slice read “Rich & creamy peanut butter on a crunchy biscuit base. It is soft and delicate in texture but rich and creamy in taste”. Indeed, looks wise, the peanut butter slab was seated nicely on a layer of digestive biscuit like crust. Seemingly, there would be 2 kinds of texture one would expect – the creamy peanut butter and the crunchy biscuit. However, the moment we attempt to slice out a small portion, we realized how soft the entire peanut butter slice was. The immediate impression after the first bite was that it was very soft, too soft that there was no differentiation between the peanut butter and the crunchy biscuit base. In fact, there was no crunchiness at all. The entire slice was akin to a pudding, which pretty much grossed us out. The peanut butter was also too sweet and totally different from the conventional peanut butter spread.

So far, the desserts at EWF has been nothing but disappointing. Guess this will be the last straw for us and we would probably not ever try any desserts from EWF.

We had the Afternoon Tea Special at Toast – A slice of Chocolate Truffle Cake and a cup of English Breakfast Tea for $6.90. The chocolate truffle cake was rather sweet, creamy and thick. It had a smooth and slightly sticky texture. There were 2 thin layers of chocolate sponge, which was very sweet when eaten on its own. But combined with the truffle, you could barely detect any sponge as the velvety and thick truffle overpowered the sponge. Truffle cakes tend to be pure simple chocolate cakes, with no extra fanciful toppings or condiments. It is perfect for chocolate lovers, but do take note that Toast’s truffle cake is pretty rich and it might get overwhelming if you were to finish 1 slice on your own.
