I went on a Saturday afternoon and was glad to see the café not packed like the rest of the Orchard Road. The first impression of the place was nice and quiet. It is part of the book store so it does make sense to have a café there where people can read and relax over a cup of coffee. The decoration pretty much used books to decorate; you can see books on the wall and above the light bulbs. This should enable people to get into a reading mood fast.
Next to the food, since it is our first time there, we decided to go for the chef recommendations. Below was our order: Soup of the Day (Cream of Mushroom), Norwegian Smoked Salmon Sandwich Ultimate Beef Meatball Pasta, Cappuccino and Iced Lemon Tea.
Soup of the day (Cream of Mushroom): The accompanying bread was cold and hard. Personally I prefer them to be warm and soft. Although the soup was supposed to be cream of mushroom, but it tasted more of potato and celery soup to me. Nothing out of extraordinary.
Norwegian Smoked Salmon Sandwich: This came in a generous portion and looks good in presentation as well. One bite into it, it makes me want to eat more. The bread is warm and soft, with the thick smoked salmon slices, lettuce and mayo makes a prefect combination. I would recommend this to everyone.
Ultimate Beef Meatball Pasta: With such a name, I was disappointed when the dish was served, three small meatballs on a small serving of pasta. I do wish the meatballs do come in a larger portion since its name has Ultimate in it. The meatballs are a bit dry for my liking even thought they are quite flavorful. The sauce and pasta tasted like any normal pasta. Nothing wow about this dish.
Overall the food can be pretty much hit and miss, of course there are other mains and desserts which I have yet to taste. I might be back to try some other mains. However, I would remember this place if I need a quiet place to relax and read a book, with food and drink to accompany me through an afternoon. After all, where can you find such a peaceful place to read in Orchard Road.
First time to the newly open Ion Orchard's Swensen outlet. So much had been heard about the place especially the ice cream buffet. (I will touch on that later), decided to meet up with my friends for dinner yesterday. Since the place is newly open, I would expect quite a crowd there and the place to be packed to brim during meal times. On a Monday night, I can say that the place is packed to the brim with a long queue outside as well.
When I was looking through the menu, the waiter was quite attentive, coming every 5 mins asking if we want to order. Seems that they added in a few local dishes but if I want to eat dishes like chicken rice, I am sure that Swensens is not the first place I will think of. For mains, we ordered the normal dishes such as Swesens's Combo, BBQ Half Chicken and Breaded Chicken. (All the fried stuff less the BBQ Chicken). For dessert, we decided to go for the ice cream buffet.
Have to say that the mains came out pretty fast, within 15 mins. However have to say the portion or the taste of the food leaves much to desire. The fries are soggy, the fried stuff are oily, no taste, seems like they are fried again food. Simply BAD! With the food on our table, we were not served our cutlery, I have to remind the waiter for it before he too realized that he forgot about it. He came back telling us that they had ran out of knives, instead he passed us some spoons. In short, even after we finished the mains, we never saw the light of the knives. Such a BIG restaurant but they ran out of knives. Hmm....... Meantime, the whole place is buzzing and the waiters were walking past our table every other minute, but to get their attention was such a difficult task.
Next was the ice cream buffet, seems like they got lots of ice cream and topping to offer, still have waffles, mini pancakes, both dark and white coco fondue with strawberries and marshmellows and some pies. Too bad one of the ice cream fridge is down, this means all the Gelatos are out, we have 15 less flavors to choose from. However the price of the ice cream buffet did not drop due to that. I am very very disappointed with the buffet. From very sour strawberries to lack of ice cream flavors, and the service of the crew tending the ice cream bar really needs to improve (a lot!).
From the initial excitement to major disappointment! There is only 1 thing I am going to say: I AM SO NOT GOING TO SWENSENS ANY TIME SOON!
candicesaid: Sounds terrible! I wanted to try the buffet actually but now I'm seriously having second thoughts... Sounds so disorganised! 08 Sep 2009 at 1:01 pm
Polarbearsaid: Hmm.... all in all I only ate 5 scoops of ice cream. So not worth it! 08 Sep 2009 at 1:55 pm
candicesaid: Wah... $18.90 for 5 scoops? Might as well buy an earthquake... hahaha. 08 Sep 2009 at 3:10 pm

I am quite sad to say that even as a Singaporean, the first plane that I seat on was not a Singapore Airlines plane. Recently, I finally had the chance to sit on one. Hee….. Once step into the plane, it is pretty much like stepping into any other airlines plane, clean and tidy. Along the way, there will be friendly and smiling air steward or stewardess to guide and help you to get to your seat. After which, they would start serving hot towels to everyone as well. If I did not manage to get a copy of Straits Time before I board the plane, I would ask for a copy. Sad to say once in a while, the air stewardess would forget about it.
While on the plane, they did their best to keep us comfortable, and try to keep up with all our requests. Their service was really good when it comes to serving drinks and meals. This is definitely their plus point here. When it comes to their food, well it seems that they only changed their menu every two months, so in the end, I got to every dish in the menu over and over again. *Mental note: To request for special meals when booking tickets next time*
Next come to their entertainment system. Sad to say I am not very impressed with the system as it tends to fail me a few times or required a few times of reset. It is also a bit slow in reaction as well. At least they do change the movies every month so at least I got new movies to watch. It would be much better if they give better quality earphones. Once the system at the seat I was seating was defective, so they gave me a US$50 voucher to use for the KrisShop. Hee…. Too bad it can be only used on the plane.
All in all, I quite liked the service onboard the plane as they would make customers as comfortable as possible.
claudsaid: My bf got the US$50 voucher too when the entertainment system fails to work. But I doubt it'll help if the flight is long and the poor chap has nothing to watch onboard. 17 Jul 2008 at 3:23 pm

I had walked past this place so many times and yet I had not had a thought of walking in for a meal. There are a few reasons, first being there always seem to be a long queue outside the restaurant. Secondly, the place serves the kind of food that does not appeal to me. Thirdly, I was always in rush when I was walking past this place. So finally one fine day, we decided to give this place a try, well there was no queue and I thought that it was all good timing. I sort of regretted my choice when I stood there waiting to be shown to a table.
The place did not seem crowded, in fact can see a few empty tables, but we have to wait at the counter. It seems like the waiters and waitresses, even the managers (well they are the ones wearing more formal), are all very busy and everywhere except the counter where we are waiting. Not even one saw us standing at the counter, making me like an idiot. After about 5 mins of waiting, I told my partner that I will count to five, if till then, no one comes up to us, we will go another place for dinner. Lucky enough (don’t know for them or us), we were ushered to a table that is pretty much near to the edge of the corridor where tons and tons of people walked past, felt like animals on display.
The decoration of the place is pretty much trying to be hip and getting the attention of the teenagers, so that they can come in, eat and spend money. There is a pool table to play and even a candy floss station where you can get free candy floss. There are tables like a capsule where a big group can be seated together. The rest of the tables are like those normal kind.
Well after the bad start, my mood was not very good to start off with. Being seated at that location, it was difficult to get the attention of the waiters. It was really frustrating but finally managed to get one and come and take our orders. So what we ordered?
Root beer float @ $7.60: This came in the A&W style. Big mug of nice cold root beer with a big scoop of ice cream in it. Nothing special but it still taste great. Nice. I do find it a bit expensive for it though. Sigh.
London style fish and chip @ $9.90: This came with a big piece of fish, chips and tartar sauce. That it! No coleslaw or salad or whatever. This is really a ripped off! The fish is a bit flaky, not really fresh, maybe frozen. The batter is a bit too thick. Nothing to wow about. I wonder what do they mean by the London part. I understand in London they served it with vinegar but I dun see them doing that. Hmm….. This is really disappointing.
American Coleslaw @ $4.90: I don’t know it is me or the coleslaw but I do find the taste of the coleslaw a bit weird. Maybe too much mayo or too much vinegar but it does not taste like any normal coleslaw. I got to say this is one of the worst coleslaw that I ever eaten. It was so bad that I did not even finished the whole coleslaw. It is that bad. There is no way I am going to order that again.
Rotisserie Chix Whole @ $14.90: After eating or tasting all the above mentioned food, I did not have high expectation for this dish. However, I was wrong. The dish turned out to be great. The chicken was moist and tender, not dry at all. The size of the chicken is also quite huge, for small eaters, they can just order this and share. The sauce that came with the chicken is perfect for it. This dish is above average. Try this and you will not regret especially after a string of disappointments. This is the one that deserves 4 stars.
After this, we decided to give the desserts a miss and asked for the bill. Again, it took us sometime to get the attention of the waiters for the bill. The bill came to us pretty fast but we paid for it and waited for it to return. We waited and waited with the water at least topped up twice. We asked for the waiter to check on the bill but it seems that it never came back. I wonder why? In the end, I got a bit pissed off and signaled to the manager and ask him to check the bill which after a wait of 10 mins, the waiter finally brought it back to us. I really wonder what happen at that time. I have therefore decided after this experience, there is NO CHANCE that I will ever return to this place for any meal ever again!
I have heard of this brand of donuts for sometime especially from those who had been to Indonesia. They had been saying that this brand of donuts one of the best there. Some even say it is better than Krispy Kreme. Wah. This is a very big thing to say. Finally I had the chance to taste it when they open their first flagship store in the newly create Raffles City Basement. No need to search for it, just follow the smell, you are able to find the store already.
I was there and have to say that Singaporeans are quick to try all things new. There was a long queue going on, people trying out their new donuts. Other then selling their donuts, they also open a café where you can drink their drinks while eating and smelling their donuts. Wahahaha. Their café is a bit small, can only seat a small number of people.
Well you can read from the above post on how they sell/pack their donuts. A person is in charge of a few flavors of donuts, so you inform him/her what you want then she will grab whatever is within reach, if not, they will pass it to the next person to get the donuts from you. This will go on until you reach the cashier at the end of the line. I did not have to wait long but I did not managed to get ot buy all the flavors that I want.
They got quite a number of different flavors of donuts, at least 10 plus over flavors. From the normal almond glazed one to special ones that have crème inside the donuts. I tried a few and I shall use the almond glazed donuts as comparison. From the outlook, it does look like any other donuts (the same kind) that are selling from other donuts shops. My first bite into it, the donut is soft and simply melts in the mouth. The almond glazed is not too sweet. Pretty good. I dare say one of the best. For other flavors like
Alcapone which got lots of almond nuts with white chocolate, but my mum prefer Donut Factory version.
Tiramisu which is loaded with tiramisu cream inside. A bit sweet, not for those who don’t like cream.
Whynut which inside is filled with peanut butter and the donut is topped with white and milk chocolate.
Well after tasting a few times, I think some of the donuts are actually quite good while some of them are just average. To me it is just another donut company that came into Singapore to grab a slice of the pie. I will still go back to eat the almond glazes provided there is no queue. I think it is sooner or later you will see that they will pop up all over the little island of ours.
claudsaid: Pop up leh! Haha! Sounds so easy. I wonder when Krispy Kreme will come... just a matter of time. 22 Apr 2008 at 5:00 pm
