Minds café is one of the first places that I will think of when I want to play board games or simply need a place to chill out with friends. Recently (slightly more than 1 month ago), they opened their 3rd outlet in the town area. This time round they are jz mins away from both City Hall and Bugis MRT.

The new place is quite easy to find, along the same street as Miss Clarity. To me, the new place is as big as Boat Quay outlet. However inside is much more spacious and brighter. New place mah. Since it is a new location, I think not much people still know of the new location unless they are walking past it or they are being to the new place when the other outlets are packed.

Although, the design and the setting of the place is still pretty much the same as other 2 outlets, I like the spacious, more space and the lighting of the new place, brighter. More space means big groups no need to squeeze together like sardines and there is more space to walk about and to do forfeits so that everyone in the room can see you. Haa….

There are both sofa seats and normal table seats. Sofa seats are more for big groups can seat up to 8 people. Table seats can seat up to 6 people but then tables can be combined for more seats. Those who want to have a decent meal before playing; I would suggest the table seats. Haa….
Since it is a new outlet, of cos they got limited games as compared to the other two outlets. However the more popular games still can be found there and to say that the games sets there are newer. Hee…

The menu there same as the other outlets not much changes but have to say that the food there is still as good as before. There is a wide variety of their drinks as well. Hee….

Depends on the size of your group, there are different packages to optimized your money and time. You can combine different packages to get the most out of it as well. Haa….. Packages usually come with 2 hours of playing time, some snacks and drinks.

They got quite a number of staff there to serve and advise, teach how to play the newer board games as well. They are quite on the ball and polite as well. They definitely got the patience to teach people how to play the games as well. If you are challenging enough you can always ask them for a challenge, be warned that they are quite good in some of the games ok! Hee….. On the average I can easily spend 4 hours there jz to play games.

This place serves quite a good place for gatherings or birthday parties as well. Not to mention affordable as well.

I thought that they have closed down for good since they closed the outlet at Hereens. However, we were looking for some place to hang out until over movie starts, we were surprised to see this outlet hidden in behind the food court. Seem like they are making a comeback since there are some crepes shops making their appearance in some shopping centres as well.

Since we are only there to wait, we ordered one of their desserts crepes, Mango Mania Crepe. The got warm crepes and cold crepes (each with a choice of 4 to 5 types), cost at $3.90 each. Quite cheap I must say.

Jz in case you are wondering what is warm crepes and cold crepes, warm crepes are those like ham with cheese etc and cold crepes are like those with fruits and ice cream.

So how they work? Make your choice and pay for the crepe at the counters. Take a seat while your crepe is being made. They will make the crepe when you order, so that the crepe comes to you hot and fresh. They will call out to you when your order is ready. Yes, you need to collect your order from the counter. Since their place is small, unless you sitting somewhere else, they sure can call out to you.

So now back to my Mango Mania Crepe. Seems like they are cutting down cost, everything used is disposable, from the plate to the forks and knives are all plastic. A bit sian alr. Look so food court style, a far cry from what they used to be. The crepe lies flat on the base of the plate with a scoop of mango ice cream on top with little cubes of mangoes spread by the the ice cream. Oh yes, it seems that they did not asked what ice cream I want and jz assumed that I asked for mango mania crepe, they give me mango ice cream. They should have a t least asked me.

After tasting it, to us, it is normal, nothing to wow or rave about. It is decent crepe la. Haa…. Luckily it came to us with the crepe is still hot if not…. …. Do find the portion a little small lah.

Maybe I will give their warm crepes a try, if not I think I rather go to food court and order dessert alr.

    213. Teo Heng Karaoke
       15 Jan 2008 at 8:05 am
    Category: Karaoke
    Bobo Bobo says:

Don't be mistaken. This Teo Heng is the one where you can sing at. Not the one selling the karaoke equipment, although they are under the same company. This KTV has been around for ages, way before K-Box ever stepped in. Even my mom has been to this KTV.

Directions to Teo Heng, Turn right when you get out of the lift and keep right. It's quite secluded (ulu) but once you get there you'll find it perpetually filled with people.

The equipment here can act up at times. They have both normal and cordless microphones. Sometimes the microphones may sound funny and sometimes it takes some time for the receiver to get your song requests. But it's not because their things are old, but more like they are well-used. Most of the other places have technical problems from time to time too isn't it?

But the advantages of singing at Teo Heng greatly outweigh the disadvantages.

    1) The Prices. It starts for $8/hr for a small room (3-4 people) to $12 for a large room (10 people) during off peak periods. If you sing all the way from 2-6 there are special packages. If you're singing during peak periods it's $14 for a small room. It's cheap!

    2) Teo Heng has the newest songs too. Don't be mistaken by the way it looks. They have all the newest songs too. AND all the oldies. AND songs which you have never heard of in your life.

    3) Drinks are at $1 per can. And price for drinks have not increased since 6 years ago.

    4) You can bring outside food in. You can bring whatever food and drink you want in. They don't care as long as you don't make a big mess.

    5) Parking at Katong Shopping Centre is relatively easy and after KTV you can always head up for cheap bowling... (but it's not so good to bowl there...)

K-Box or Teo Heng? Give me Teo Heng any time. :)
** I wanted to give it 4 stars but I do think that the furnishings need to be update. My companion commented that it is a little sleazy but it's really a family KTV :)

    214. Bakerzin (VivoCity)
       14 Jan 2008 at 5:43 pm
    Polarbear Polarbear says:

I was at Vivocity and a sudden thought of having some desserts so decided to pop by Bakerzin to give it a try. It has been a long time since I stepped into one and I used to like their desserts and cakes a lot.

So I was standing outside waiting to be seated. Can see that the place is not really packed and most of the waitresses are jz walking around. I am quite big sized and not easily to be missed but then I was standing there for at least a good 5 mins before anyone come up to show me to my seat. The waitress behind the cake counter saw me waiting, yet did not inform her other colleagues to come and show me to my seat. Disappointing in the service so far. In fact I was telling my partner, I will count to 10 and if no one come up to us, we will jz walk away. Surprising at 10, someone turned up and showed us to our seats. Haa…. Still disappointed!

So seem like we can choose our seats cos not crowded. Got the sofa seats and they got this quite beautiful and interesting plastic chair as well. Nice. Given the menus and since we in the mood for dessert, we skipped all the mains and jz checked out the desserts.

The ordering part was easy and they also sort of set up the table according to what we have ordered. Like mentioned in the last post, they did not serve ice water. Bad move.

    We ordered:
    • Ice lemon tea: @ $4.80. Nothing to say except it is freaking expensive for a small glass of ice lemon tea. Could get more at Carl’s Jr at the same price. Haa…. Cheapo me.

    • Vanilla Brulee: $5. I am a very big fan of cream brulee. When they served it up, me and my partner jaws dropped. Y? Cos it is freaking small. Haa…. Well size aside, it is actually quite good. I am very impressed. The top is covered by a layer of melted sugar, the custard is not too sweet, and has a eggy and milky taste which I liked. It is a good combination of the both.

    • Profiteroles: $8.80. I actually used to eat this every time I go to Bakerzin. I will recommend to eat this with their cheese ice cream. At first, when I know they got cheese ice cream, I was like “Eeee…” However after tasting it, I fell in love with it. Hee… This time round it disappoints me as the ice cream is not as good as it used to be. The taste of the cheese is a bit too strong for my liking. There is a sour taste to it as well. Disappointing.

Think this will be one of the last times that I will go to Bakerzin for desserts alr. I did not try their cakes but hope that their standard will not drop as well. If not, I will have to go to other places for desserts alr.

I was introduced to this place by my colleague who saw the stall on TV. He had been to this stall and said that the muffins are really good and we had to be there by 11.30am if not there will be along queue at the stall. So all of us started to head there and reached there by 11.30am.

The stall is quite easy to find as you can jz follow the muffin smell and you can walk straight to the stall. Once we were there, we started queuing and soon enough more than 5 people joined the queue. Haa…

The stall is small but it does hold at least 2 ovens and can see trays and trays of different kind of muffins. There are at least 4 people in the stall baking, stacking and serving the crowd. While waiting for you turn, you can jz stand there and smell the muffins and decide what flavors to buy. That is the difficult part. What to buy?

    The muffins flavors are:
    • Chocolate Chips
    • Banana Walnut
    • Orange Peel
    • Rasins
    • Coconut
    • Carrot Walnut
    • Pumpkin
    • Cheese
    • Blueberries
    • Cranberries
    • Redberries

The muffins and big in size and have a lot of ingredients inside. One is enough for a breakfast, tea break or dessert. Eat alone is good enough, if not together with a cup of tea or coffee will be best.

My personal favourite are Banana Walnut, Chocolate Chips and Blueberry. All the muffins are moist inside but got a crispy cover and this makes the muffin soft inside but hard on the outside. A good way to eat the muffins is to put it in the toaster and reheat for a few mins before eating. It is simply jz bring out the smell and the taste of the muffin to its best, fresh out of oven kind although it is tasty even though it is not reheated. Every trip that I goes there I sure would buy at least 10 muffins and above.

They also sell other things like:
    • Fruit flans
    • Fruity Mousse
    • Classic Mousse
    • Brownies
    • Classic Cheesecakes
    • French Pastires
    • Crumbles

I have tasted their fruit flans and their crumbles. It also good and I always buy a slice to eat on the spot. Their crumbles have a very thick pastry but full of fillings inside, can see the apples or thick slices of mango inside.

Their prices are also very reasonable, muffins from $1.10 to $1.30 and cakes / flans from $24 and above. The staff there also very friendly, patient to wait for you to make your choices as well. They are also happy to advice you on what is good to eat as well.

They also accept phone booking as well.

    216. Eden Cafe

    Bobo Bobo says:

Eden Cafe is a little gem tucked away amongst all the eateries there! It's tastefully done in a modern yet simplistic manner. The ambience was a winner with me. There were a couple of seats outside but I would much rather sit inside.

What I loved most about the place was the small garden Clement had at the back. It was filled with plants and Clement let us try some which were delicious.. Yes the leaves of the plants were delicious.

Clement provided great service, patiently explaining every bit to us. Esp when the items don't look conventional. The servers were also very polite, clearing our dishes at timely intervals.

I liked most of the dishes they went down pretty well with me... I shall talk about the ones I loved!

I liked the Black Sesame Pasta. It was my first time having it.. It was very different in taste but I still liked it. There was a certain flavour to it. But it didn't go down so well with many people...

I loved the Tomato based soup served with mussel. The soup was very flavourful and thick. The fact that it was so healthy and tasty at the same time had me licking the bowl clean :)

I also liked the Seedless Grape Chicken. This is the one dish that I would love to go back specially for. It was delicious! And we had ours in this funny fortune cookie cover thing which was really cute.

There were so many delicious things on the menu and the molten chocolate cake really had me.. That I think another visit is a necessity. The mains for the lunches also vary from week to week. You can join the mailing list to have Clement email it to you!!

Who doesn't know Thai Express? This chain expanded really fast and it's now all over the place. I even have one just a stone's throw from my place.

Popped by the one at PS just recently with a friend. We were nicely greeted and shown to a seat quickly. It was a Sunday afternoon and PS was brimming with people but Thai Express was only a quarter filled. Well it helped that there were many eateries around the area I guess.

We quickly decided on our food and the server asked if we'd like warm or iced water. I like that she didn't just assume that everyone wants iced water.

    Food ordered:
    Kaeng Khiew Mangsawirat ($8.90)
Green Vegetable Curry served with Rice
I'm used to green curry that is much milder and has more flavour but this one was much spicier. There was a lot of vegetables though and it was pretty filling despite what people might think.

    Poo Phat Pung Kari ($9.90)
Curried Soft Shell Crab with Eggs and Onions, served with Rice
This one's curry was less spicy, more mild. Complete opposite. But the curry masked any oilyness soft shell crabs usually have so it was a pretty good dish really.

    Fresh Prawn Wraps ($5.90)
Fried to a crisp, the wrap was very tasty. The prawns were not as fresh as one would expect but still acceptable I guess.

Acceptable food with pretty good service at an acceptable price I guess I will be there again.

Epicurious is another small eatery along Robertson Quay that I've tried. It's really hard to find! You have to walk all the way to the end, near the bridge. It's facing the river with some seats outside and just 3 tables inside.

I love the ambience. It's very cosy with warm lights around. There are shelves all filled with little knick knacks from the past. There are also photographs of Singapore in the early days.. It was certainly fun looking through everything. So fun that it distracted me from ordering. Luckily I had a companion who was more focused. The items are for sale but they are expensive.. like $6 for a soup spoon..

The only thing which was odd about the place was Jay Chou singing loudly from the kitchen. Luckily we did kinda like Jay so it wasn't bad. But it certainly didn't fit in with the place.

The menu was a little small with few items but apparently they change the items on the menu from time to time so new items will be up for tasting eventually.

I had the Herb Roasted Half Chicken that day. It was served with baked potatoes and mushrooms. The chicken was well marinated and the meat just tastes of the herbs. It was yummy and I'm still thinking of it. Although I hate having to separate meat from bones but I certainly tried hard that night to get my yummy meat. The serving was definitely more than enough for me.

I'd have to agree that $55 for 2 mains and a dessert does seem a little ex but I think it's really worth it! I would definitely be back... to try the Muthu's Flourless Chocolate Cake which was sold out that day :)

Les Bouchons is a quaint little place sitting quietly by the river. When I say little I do mean little as it has about 10 tables only, with 5 outside by the river. At certain times of the day, it might not be such a good idea to dine by the river as the smell can be quite pungent.

Having walked past this place a couple of times, we decided to drop in for a post-xmas dinner. The interior of the place seemed nice at first glance... but if you took a second look you'll see layers of dust on the shelves which are empty. You could even see that there used to be bottles on the shelves and the bottles were taken away recently but not returned.

We were pretty surprised by the small menu of 15 items (in total). There was some trouble picking due to the lack of pictures and detailed descriptions. Soup is not served here. Nope it's not available at all, even if you ask the server.

There was complimentary bread which was a little dry, so it was more disheartening that there wasn't soup to go with it.

    Food Ordered:
    Sirloin Steak with Herbs ($30.80)
My companion ordered this medium-rare and it came as she wanted it. The steak was quite big but thin. And despite the "with Herbs" I certainly didn't detect the taste or smell of any in this dish. It was quite a disappointing one. The meat was quite tough and was a little lacking in taste.

    Grilled Fillet of Salmon ($30.80)
Slightly charred on the outside, this was a pretty large (thick) serving of salmon. I don't know to be happy or sad that it was a large serving since it was just average. The texture was just right. There is little taste. After sprinkling the lemon juice over it, all I could really taste was the lemon. It was really just Grilled Salmon.

Both mains were served with just fries. I loved the fries (the only thing I liked) They were the fat sort and were not oily. They were also free flow. But they already serve a mountain of fries with the mains so unless you think you're going to chill for a long time, I doubt anyone would need another serving of fries.

The service provided wasn't up to par either. Considering that we were the only ones in the restaurant that early evening, they were pretty slow to notice us when we waved. It is a small place you know.

The bill came up to about $85 for two of us. We ordered two mains and a drink. For the quality and the variety I would say that it was too expensive and I wouldn't be back. Looks like I have to look elsewhere for my fat fries.

Benny Se Teo, the only Singaporean to have trained in Jamie Oliver's kitchen "Fifteen", opened this 54-seater restaurant in June 2007. He aimed to help ex-offenders find an alternate path while also delivering good food to the public. With such an interesting story behind this little place, we just had to drop by for a visit.

We found our own seats. It was early afternoon on a weekday and the place was had just two other tables occupied so it was easy for us to find a seat by the window.

This place adopts the self-serve system which means you decide what you want, indicate on the little paper they provide at the tables, bring it to the cashier and pay. You also get your own plain water at a station next to the cashier. That's fine by me since there is no service charge.

Enticed by the option to create your own baked rice, all 3 of us picked Baked Rice for that day.

Cheese Baked Rice with Tangy Tomato sauce and Chicken slices ($8.90)

The food came pretty quickly but the serving was pretty small (that said, I didn't finish it.). It tasted much like any other Baked Rice... if anything, I'd say the rice was not soft enough.

My companions' baked rice looked more delicious with the cream based sauces.

Eighteen Funky Strawberry - Dessert ($5.80)
Four scoops of ice cream served with strawberries and hazel nuts and oreo biscuits... Sounds good isn't it? But it wasn't as good as I had hoped. The ice cream wasn't rich enough and the strawberries were sourish. Well what could I expect for $5.80. It was ok though, I just wouldn't order it again.

After the entire meal, and after drinking 1/2 a glass of water, I noticed that my glass was filthy. Very filthy.

The total came up to about $33.50 for the three of us, which was a little too much for the quantity and quality of food given. I might still go back as the rest of the items on the menu did look interesting though. :) Well if you're a student you can check out the $5.90 set meals which I think are a good deal :)
