Dim sum in the Central Business District
Noble House is really near my office so it's become the default go-to place for lunches with the colleagues.
1) Deep Fried Mango Roll ($7.50 for 5 pieces), crunchy prawns and sweet mango wrapped in flaky pastry and deep fried. We all felt this was a little too oily.
2) Pork and Century Egg Congee ($9 for 2 bowls). I personally don't eat century egg, but I tried a spoonful of the congee. It was smooth, thick and fairly well-flavoured.
3) Steamed Bbq Pork Buns ($6 for 5 pieces). I liked this, the pork was sweet, smoky and fatty and the buns was soft and fluffy
4) Yam Puff Pastry with Minced Chicken ($7.50 for 5 pieces). We also agreed that this was a little too oily.
5) Pan Fried Turnip Cake with Preserved Meat ($6 for 5 pieces): It was very bland.
6) Steamed Beancurd Skin with Pork and Prawns ($6.75 for 5 pieces). I took a liking to this. There were julienned black fungus and bamboo shoots for texture and crunch.
7) Steamed Rice Roll with Bbq Pork ($5). The layers were a little too thick for my liking and there weren't enough bbq pork
8) Fish Maw Thick Soup with Seafood ($12 for an individual portion). The soup was bright yellow and came filled with enoki mushrooms (golden mushrooms), conpoy (dried scallops), thick chunks of crabmeat, diced prawns, diced fresh scallop and silvers of fish maw. I liked this.
9) Black Chicken Soup with Red Dates ($38): Healthy and nourishing.
10) Hairy Crab ($48) lightly steamed so the clean, fresh flavours of the creamy golden roe came bursting through every bite
11) Steamed Garoupa Fish, Hongkong style ($72). The fish was light, clean and sweet.
12) Broccoli doused with Crab Meat Sauce ($38): okay only

Although this restaurant is hiding up one of the buildings along Shenton Way, we prefer this Chinese restaurant rather than those in Far East Square. We tried before their 4-pax set lunches, as well as the ala-carte dishes. And of course, there’s this vegetarian fried rice which we usually ordered, as one of our colleague is a non-meat eater. Their dim sum dishes as well as the Beijing duck, also kept us happy.
For a Tung Luk restaurant, the service at this outlet is not really consistent. There’s this once when we only had 4 pax and the waiter (prob captain level) attentively recommend to us the set lunches available. And there’s this other time when we had 2 tables, but we could hardly find any waiter around us during the meal, to check out on our outstanding orders (which was taking very long to come out). And even when we managed to catch the attention of someone who looks captain level, she tried to signal her staff to attend to us, but of course, it took quite a while for the staff to finally come to us. That meal does however end up pleasantly, with the staff packing our unfinished chee zhun fan in a box for takeaway.

Tung Lok is getting from bad to worse.
Picked this for a family dinner coz we wanted Chinese. They have a very attractive ala carte buffet dinner for either $34 per pax and $39 , with the former inclusive of one portion of Peking Duck and Sharks Fin, and the latter Peking Duck and Buddha Jumps Over the Wall. The choice was $34 in the end.
You can pick your dishes from quite a comprehensive selection of combination platter, seafood, vegetables, meat, noodles / rice, and desserts. Here's what we ordered:
Peking Duck - Very dry egg crepes with more duck meat than skin.
Sharks Fin Soup - Clear chicken soup with a pinch of fakey fins.
Corn and chicken soup - campbell-ish thickened with starch
Meat platter - Not good
Spinach with 3 treasures (egg) - very bland although healthy
Cereal prawns - surprisingly not bad but prawns seemed abit tempura than deep fried.
Chilli crab, white pepper crab, and steamed with chinese wine - came in mini-size crabs with each flavour. One of the better dishes of the evening.
Braised abalone - fakey abalone with chinese lettuce in light soya sauce.
Kung Pao chicken - mediocre
Steamed fish - Fresh but normal otherwise
Salmon sashimi - strange selection in a chinese buffet but quite refreshing for the palette.
Only the prawns and crabs were worthy of mention. Tung Lok really really really needs to buck up. Even the rather nice interior couldn't help lift up this review.
