The Characteristics of Pier Boxing that makes it a Great Modern Day Self Defence System in Singapore.
Pier Boxing’s philosophy: Pier boxing as a Self Defence Martial Art advocates the practice of staying out of trouble, not confronting aggressors, relenting & fleeing whenever possible, dodging over blocking when assaulted, breaking through when trapped. Only when there is no other way out, then resort to combat to escape the deadly situation.
Straightforward: The 27 moves of Pier Boxing are meant for everyday individuals without any former martial arts training, to be used as their last line of defence in a life threatening attack. The moves are direct, simple to learn & remember, depending largely on human instinct & reaction speed. Hence, there are no stances, striking, blocking or dodging moves that demand a well conditioned body to perform. There are also no special instructions in the moves which takes a long time to understand or great effort to remember.
Upon mastering the 27 moves and combat principles, it is possible for any every day individual to instinctively use fast moving natural body movements to dodge or block attacks and hit the attackers repeatedly with effective strikes. Thus, he or she only requires quick revisions to keep the skills intact.
Multipurpose: As there are only 27 moves in Pier Boxing, all them have to be practical, efficient and have many uses. E.g. Swinging fists of Pier boxing can be used to divert away a punch or strike the face of the attackers. Ground rolling moves can be used to ride off a powerful kick attack or break a fall. Ground dodging moves can be used to dodge a long weapon strike or strike an attacker at his knees. Palm strikes can instantly be transformed into a tugging move or “claws” to strike the attacker's eye.
Parallel Flow Of Motion: In order to shorten the training period, maintain a balance posture during combat and increase the attacking speed. Pier Boxing is develop to use only upper body moves to strike the upper body and only lower body moves to strike the lower body in a standing fight. This direct combat principle also allow Pier Boxing to reduce and simplify the combat moves. Hence, it don’t have any high, flying or side swinging kicks which take years to master.
Ability To Be Used Effectively When Suffering From Injuries & Regardless of Position: The blocking, striking and dodging moves of Pier Boxing use all different parts of the body, the same moves can be applied when standing, kneeling or lying. Which greatly increase the chance of survival in a deadly attack. E.g. In the case when any of the fingers are broken and the clenching of fist is impossible, one can use the open palm strikes and forearm strikes to replace the fists and continue combating the attacker. When knocked over, one can use the same standing kicking and punching moves to strike the attackers from the ground. When suffering from ankle injuries, one can drop to his knees, use the arm moves for striking and rolling moves for dodging.
No Space Constrain: Pier Boxing is developed primarily to be used as a self defence system in the congested city of Singapore, where many long range fight moves are not possible. E.g. narrow walkways, cramped apartment lifts, crowded pubs etc. Hence, it contains moves like forearm bash, standing knee strikes, back fist knocks, ground kicks, palm strikes etc to combat attackers at very close range.
Use Of Everyday Items As Self Defence Weapons: In Pier Boxing the combat moves are already formulated to allow the use of hard objects as an extension of the arm strikes or blocks. Hence, when outnumbered or overpowered one can easily grab items at hand to be used as self defence weapon with Pier Boxing. E.g. Using a handphone or lighter in a hammer fist, a briefcase or umbrella in swinging fist or a bunch of keys in a claw strike.
Does Not Observe Traditional Code Of Honor: In Pier Boxing there is no need to put on a uniform when training or scream to announce the strikes like traditional martial arts. As Pier Boxing are meant for everyday individuals as their last line of defence in a life threatening attack, many of its survival moves are considered totally unacceptable in competitive fight sports. E.g. fleeing from a fight, groin kicking, eye gouging, mouth tearing, ripping belly button, stomping of a down attacker, using objects to throw or strike on unarmed attackers.
Does Not Advocates Attempting To Disarm Blade or Stick Welding Assailant: It may seem all possible during training sessions. But in a real life knife or baseball bat attack, it is almost impossible for an everyday individual to remember the steps involve, or to muster enough courage to charge towards the weapon welding assailant for disarming. Most probably they will hesitate half way through charging and give the assailant the opportunity to hit or stab them countless time. Even when an everyday individual manage to hold on to the wrist of the assailant in attempt to disarm him, there may be more armed assailants hiding nearby and they will certainly emerge to strike from the back.
Pier Boxing advocates when trapped by a weapon welding assailant, bombard him relentlessly at a distant by throwing small items like glass bottles and plates, or strike him with a big objects like chairs and dustbins. When there is nothing available to be used for throwing and striking like in a carpark, dodge the assailant's strikes follow by kicking him to the ground and fleeing towards crowded areas like shopping malls and busy streets.
