I had my hair permed for the very first time with Kaoru-san at Shunji Matsuo. The japanese perm cut cost me about $300, for my shoulder length hair. Though the price was on the steep side, the perm was very well done, and it made my naturally wavy, but messy hair more managable. The curls were soft and looked natural even after a month, and the cut seemed to look better even better after a month.
Kaoru-san's a japanese hairstylist, so she does japanese cuts well. She gives pretty good advice on the type of hairstyle that suits you (based on face shape, hair texture, lifestyle etc), if you are undecided. Even though she's a japanese, she has been staying in Singapore for quite awhile, so don't worry about her not being able to understand what you say. Should you be afraid, it will be good if you can show her a picture of what you want:)
Overall, Kaoru-san's service is pretty good. However, it would have been better if she was the one administering the application of the perming lotion. I personally find that the assistants tend to be less attentive to the customer's needs (probably because it's always crowded).
Still, I would go back to Shunji-Matsuo because of the japanese hairstylists over there.

My first impression of the salon before I stepped in was that it looked pretty professional and bustling with business.
I called to arrange for my first appointment with them, only to have a very pushy lady on the line who kept trying to get their 'Master Director' of sorts to be my stylist. (I managed to decline her kind offer.)
I only found out how much she cost when I set foot in the salon. $90 ! For! A! Haircut!
Okay, that aside, my stylist, Chris (Int'l Director), knew his stuff, albeit a little too technically. Very... textbook, I would say. So I didn't get like friendly chatter... it was more of... snip snip snip, ok bye!
I have to say that the service at Shunji Matsuo (Wellington) is non-existent. Throughout the duration of my haircut, I wasn't offered a single magazine to read, or any drinks. Nowadays, even neighbourhood salons offer this kind of basic service so I guess I was (sorely) disappointed.
All in all, alright place for a haircut... if that's *all* you really need, and aren't bothered by nitty gritties like service.
I would go somewhere else with my $69 though. Probably similar expertise, and I'll get MUCH BETTER service.
