Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (SMRT)

Singapore has well planned and efficient transport system, from the roads to the MRT. It is fast and convienient as there is never any traffic congestions or very long waiting times. At each station, the estimated arrival of trains is about 3 to 4 minutes. Very fast intervals if you are just sitting in the train for about a few stops.

However, if you were wanting to go to the other end of Singapore or to town, it would take much longer in the train, and depending on the time and day, it could be either very crowded or very free and easy. Estimated travel of time to much further places only takes about 1 hour or so, which is rather reasonable but if you were to travel by car and you dont have much traffic congestion, the roads by far are much faster as you can take shortcuts whereas the train has a fixed travel route. We cant have our MRTs flying up in the air and crash right?

Recently, there has bee works of a new colored line. The yellow line. Its like a little cut through Bishan to Marymount and some other place that I've forgotten, sorry. However, but since this yellow line cuts through where the main red line cannot, time is more saved although you have to take the trouble to change trains. MRT has already have the North South Red Line, East West Green Line, and the Purple Line. Wow, our transport system is color coded too! Now visual people like me will never miss a stop or get on the wrong train.

One thing about the MRT is that, sometimes courtesy is not seen much. Truthfully I say in my opinion, no offence though. I'm just writing down my experience on the trains for I dont know how long. One pattern that I see when I board almost crowded trains is that, people will never move to the center of the cabin. They would pick and empty spot and stand there, like a brick wall. Even if other people have lee way to get into the train even. And the people that's coming into the train have to become water and squeeze and sometimes shoulder their way through to find some standing space. And I noticed that the priority seats are now in darker color, those seats are for the most needy if they happen to come into the train. If only Singapores would forsake some of their personal comfort and convienience and think about other people for a minute. Everyone wants to get somewhere and wants to have as little as possible, so just shift in a little and the train doors wont clamp into some unlucky passenger.

I know I sound like a cynic, but I'm just frankly speaking. And if there is bad examples, there is always good examples. I see this pattern in the youngsters, they usuall will choose to stand then to sit down, cause they know that the seats are for the more eldery people and its easier not to take up butt space. There was a few times where I've seen younger generation Singaporeans who give up their seats to those who needs them but the youngsters of this day and age are rather noisy and rowdy, like their conversations but there's not much problem.

Now enough of the people on the train, the MRT EZ-Link cards have sped up getting through the machines as you just have to tap. Singaopre is really living up to trying to up the standard of living. And topping up the cards at these automated stations are even hassle free! Dont know engrish? Nevermind, there's all four languages of Singapore! Mandarin, Bahasa Melayu, Tamil and English! See, you get to pick one and the instructions are very simple to follow.

In my own opinion, Singapore's transport system is at its best, although sometimes they could try to polish the bars and seats to make the train more inviting and probably do something about the squeaking connectors inbetween cabins, it can get really noisy.

Just one thing that I can think of right now on how to make taking the train a more pleasing travel is to just to educate the citizens on general manners and to be considerate of other people. Thinking about others before yourself does wonders on improving one personal being. So no more pushing in the trains! Yay!

The MRT, the mode of transport for more then half of Singapore's population. I really do like the MRT as a whole. Maybe because i am an environmentalist and taking the MRT really do cut down on my carbon footprint.

One really good point that the MRT has is that it is super accessible. All the important estates and key areas in town are covered. As such, you do not fear that you cannot reach your destination.

Another really good point of the MRT is that it is fast. Taking on average that you need 60 minutes to take a bus from Jurong West to Orchard Road, Taking a train sounds like a very good idea. Do not compare with taking a private car. It is like comparing a Cherry QQ with Ferrari. Not everybody in Singapore can afford a car. As such, public transport comes into place.

However, the service of MRT really need some brushing up. One of them is the interval of the trains. Making everybody pack like sardines is not a very viable option.

All in all, the MRT really do make singapore more accessible. Taking into account that me, being a student and having no choice but to take the MRT, i really appreciate the MRT. It is a reason why it is called public transport, so please look at all its good areas which is quite crucial and not the small little bad areas that are really not that important.
